Wow, didn't know that.  Probably should have read the manual, but I'm a real gamer so I don't.  I have to admit it takes me a while to get used to analog mode in sports games, mainly boxing games, but I might give it a chance on DI.  Game says I am about 21% done with the main quests, but I'm taking my time and trying to do all the side quests as I go along.

Analog mode is what really made Dead Island unique.

Elder Scrolls - and games built just like it - are games that I just can't keep going with. B/c they are so big; have so many different story-lines, quests & threads - I just can't keep playing them for ridiculous numbers of hours & days & months in a row. After a while, it can get repetitive - especially since they ain't changed too much in the gameplay regard, over the years. They're a game that I like to spread out and come back to every now and then, for whatever my "fill" is - and every time I come back to play again some few months later, it feels like I just bought another damn expansion.

Same goes for TDU2, as well.

Over 100 hours w/ Skyrim base-game - still ain't done with it.

Yeah, I hear a lot of people say this about Elder Scrolls games. I'll admit, the gameplay is extremely repetitive. I have no idea why I love the games as much as I do; it takes me forever to get bored with them. When I play one of them, it's pretty much all I play until I finish all of the questlines. I was playing through Skyrim this winter, and got through all the questlines + the Dawnguard expansion, and was on the quest for the final daedric artifact, and was about to start the Dragonborn expansion, then my Xbox got jacked. That sucked. Bought Skyrim again on Steam though, plan on going through with mods...eventually. But yeah, I can see what you mean about needing to take breaks. I guess I just don't share that need...don't know what it is about them, but the Elder Scrolls games are pretty much my gaming nirvana.

That's a good point, and I suppose I'm not only playing short games now, just for the most part. As I said I'm currently playing XCOM EU, which is apparently a good 30+ hours per playthrough, and am about 30 hours deep in Skyrim with the main + college quests completed (working on Thieves guild and civil wars ATM), so I still find time for these big experiences, it just has to be something I'm dying to play which most of the games I listed aren't. So I suppose my philosophy is actually fairly similar to yours, I just hadn't looked at it that way :)

I definitely get apprehensive booting up a longer game. A game like XCom wouldn't bug me, 30 hours isn't too much...it's those hugggge games, like Elder Scrolls, where at the beginning, I'm like, okay, if I start, this is all I'm doing for like, the next 2 or 3 months. The game I just bought that I want to get into but at the same time don't is Civilization 5. I haven't played a Civ game in awhile (3, a few years back), and I remember easily losing entire days at a time to it. Civ is one of those games that you just don't stop playing. There's no satisfying endpoint. When you run through the entirety of a game, you're like "hmm, guess I'll boot up a new one then."

EDIT:

To add to this - Oblivion: GOTY Deluxe also has taken over 100 hours of my life easily.

Omg. Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls, and what really got me into video games. I played it on my roommate's Xbox in college. It inspired me to buy my own Xbox, where I lost my save, got Oblivion, and played it all over again. This year I popped it back in, played it AGAIN, and decided to try to 100 percent it (like, explore every cave, get every nirnroot, type of 100%). I got bored after 180(!!!) hours and being so overpowered that I obliterated everything in like 2 swings. Sooo yeah in total Oblivion has easily eaten about 300 hours up out of my life.

Yeah, all of those games are great. FO3: GOTY + FO:NV Ultimate + Morrowind: GOTY + Skyrim (base game) + DAO Ultimate have EACH themselves taken over 100 hours of my life away.

And if you add in mods, it gets even MORE insane. I played all of them vanilla (except Morrowind, which I haven't played at all) and have poured at least 100 hours into them. But they all have additional content you can play w/mods, like Skyrim has that ridiculous Falskaar mod. W/mods you could easily pour 150-250 hours into a single playthrough with some of those games. I feel like I could potentially play nothing but Bethesda games for the rest of my life, and still be satisfied.

I have have only played AC2, ACB, & ACR, but I really don't see why AC3 is on that list.

...I really should dig into FO3, FO:NV, DA:O, Morrowind, Skyrim.... -seppuku-

If you haven't dug into any of those games, you really owe it to yourself to try them. FO3/NV and Skyrim are some of my favorite games from this generation, and Dragon Age is pretty good also. I just downloaded Morrowind when steam had it on sale for 5 bucks a month ago. Downloaded the overhaul mod, which makes it borderline gorgeous. Played it for a few hours and could see myself getting reallllly absorbed into it, so put it off for later. But yeah...play those.

I wonder when he'll get to GTA5, then.

Hmmmm - maybe we'll get a PC port by then...

We should all donate to cryogenics research, that way we can be brought back when they have the medical knowledge to cure whatever ailments were going to kill us, so we can finish our eternal backlogging quest for glory.

Well I'm somewhat encouraged by the fact howlongtobeat's average for main story + extras is only half that, but still...with my current level of interest fairly low, I'll probably tackle some other BIG games (Fallout 3/NV, XCOM *playing now*, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts 2, Persona 3, KOTOR, and AC3 first and foremost) before I get anywhere near GTA IV.

So you'll get to GTAIV in like, 3 years? Haha

Was on board until that last bit. As amazing as the game seems to be, anything longer than 20 or so hours...isn't going to happen right now :joystick:

Maybe they just hold off on sales because they want more winky faces in your posts ;)

I hear that. I like to mix longer games w/shorter ones, or play two games simultaneously. Playing through Baldur's Gate kind of fell into my lap, though. I have this job where I take care of an autistic adult all weekend (I'm there now). I live in his house, which is provided by a state agency. I take my laptop w/me, and play games on there. My laptop doesn't have very good specs, so when I'm here the time really lends itself well to playing games like BG, which doesn't need a very good computer to run it. Recently this guy's been sleeping a lot, so I've gotten to put in like 12-15 hours per shift the past couple weeks. Yes, I get paid to play video games, essentially. Sweet deal.

Good luck w/ trying to get Tony to convince Activision to do a major price-slashing sale like that. ;)

Actvision doesn't even know what game bundling and 75% off sales are. ;)

Hell, they (Activision) barely know what 50% off means. ;)

Truth...then again, they don't really need to.

Yeah, BG2 is even better than BG1 - even the story-telling and writing is MUCH better in BG2.

Anyways, yeah - I don't recommend after doing any long games, you do another of the same right afterwards. I'd even recommend hoping to a different genre entirely. Space them out.

For NWN games - I loved NWN1: Hordes expansion; really liked NWN2 (base game); and loved NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer.

If you ain't played Planescape: Torment - make sure some day, you eventually get around to that.

Whoops, forgot, picked up Planescape too during that sale. Everything I've read about Planescape, people just rave about it. I'm looking forward to that more than anything from that sale. I played it for about 5 minutes while trying to set up a widescreen mod, and I could tell right away it'd be interesting just because the setting is so different.

Random sidenote: Just finished Baldur's Gate Enhanced like 10 minutes ago. Final boss battle is pretty brutal. If anybody has never played Baldur's Gate, you should probably get on that...may want to wait until it's on sale again, though. It's totalllly worth the 5 bucks I spent on it. My playthrough was about 80 hours.

You do realize that only 2 of Activision's games that are currently on sale are even in the top 20 top selling games on steam. One of those, Deadpool, is at 11 and the other, Black Ops 2, is at 15.

I'm surprised that any call of duty is in the top 20, just because I've always had the perception that anybody who really wants those games tends to buy them right away, so who the heck would actually wait until 10 months after it releases to get a 25% discount?

I really should just sell any and all cards.  I keep crafting badges if the card set is small, hoping for one I actually want to use.  Instead I have: 90% off Krater, 90% off Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, 66% off Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition, and 50% off Garry's Mod. :-/

Yeah, I've just been selling cards off since the started w/them. I've probably made around three dollars selling them off. Think of it this way, apply it to a game you DO want when it's on sale. For example, let's say I wanted to buy Rogue Legacy right now: instead of 40 percent off, I've essentially just crafted myself a 20% off Rogue Legacy coupon by selling off my cards, making it in total 60 percent off.
