#14398574 Japanese Niche Games Deals & Discussion Thread 4.0

Today is the scheduled release for the fan-made localization patch for the pc version of  Ao no Kiseki.   In the original order of release for kiseki (Trails) games, Ao / Azure comes right before Cold Steel 1. In terms of ingame timeline, Ao covers concurrent events that happen along with those of Cold Steel I and II.   If someone is going in with no series knowledge, I would at least recommend starting with Zero no Kiseki, for which a similar fan-made localization has been available for one year now.

I'm excited as this is one of my very favorite games.  I think I've done ~4 playthroughs, all with a past fan translation (for which I am very thankful).  But the patch releasing today will be much more polished.

Edit:  The release is now live here.

Though you linked it, I will mention that the Zero patch was updated with the release of the Ao patch. It changes a fair bit of names and what not to coincide with the NISA translation of Cold Steel IV.

I was planning on posting this, but you've been watching the info much more closely than I have it seems. I should finally dig into Zero/Ao now that both are complete with a decent translation.

Yeah i need to give those a playthrough soon as well.  What is the order anyway?  The new one > deception > truth?  does zan fit it somewhere or can i continue to ignore it?

Prelude to the Fallen > Mask of Deception > Mask of Truth

Zan is just a musou game set in the series universe that has nothing to do with the story. Also because Prelude is translated by NISA so I can't comment on the quality of it, however the two Mask games localized by Atlus were terrific.

Looks like the Trails from Zero fan translation is finally releasing this Saturday, the 14th. They even went as far as recreating the original trailer in English:

Oh and the PC demo is out for Cold Steel 3 on Steam. NISA hired the new porting company created by Durante. So it shouldn't be a shit show like other NISA ports. He also released a patch for Ys VIII on PC to fix a lot of the issues a month ago or so as well that includes experimental local co-op. Check out the month old AMA if you're interested.

Looks like there's a complete fan translation for the original Sakura Wars/Taisen on the Sega Saturn. Not sure how many are interested, but I wasn't sure anybody else would mention it.

My backer copy of Bloodstained arrived yesterday. Looks a bit better than the demo did, but not by a whole lot. Game is pretty good so far, but I do hate one thing. You can't turn the low health indicator off and it's extremely intrusive/annoying. I wish there was an option to disable it or lower its graphical effect greatly.

I'm really liking Cadence of Hyrule. The music remix choices they've made are pretty popular, safe choices with popular tracks from Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past. They've all sounded pretty good thus far. I think I'm looking at beating the game at around 10 hours I'd wager based on my progress thus far. It's not particularly hard

I came across a Nintendo Treehouse video from the other day that does a better job showcasing the gameplay than the videos I posted before. They explain some of the mechanics, but be warned that if you watch too long they'll enter a dungeon (which aren't particularly long) and fight its boss.

And while I'm at it since you all have been mentioning a lot of Trials of Mana, here's a Nintendo Treehouse video on the gameplay for it from the other day as well for those interested. Looks better than the Secret of Mana remake at the very least.

I'm still cautious though. Too many remakes/ports of theirs have been of sub-par quality to make me not question it regardless of how the game itself looks.

I still don't know what to think of this.  I think I'll grab Crypt, which is on sale right now on psn for $3, to get a feel for it.

So long as you have a decent ability to move in line with the rhythm, it shouldn't be much of an issue. The main difference between the two games will be that in Cadence of Hyrule, enemies can drop health and the better you are with hitting the beat, the more drops you get. Whereas in Necrodancer, you're very lucky if you get health recovery. Crypt of the Necrodancer should be a much more difficult game than Cadence of Hyrule.

Though, I still recommend giving Crypt of the Necrodancer a go. More so since it's on sale. I enjoyed it quite a lot.

EDIT: Cadence of Hyrule doesn't "restart" you from the beginning when you die either. You respawn from checkpoint stones.

Meh, there hasn't been anything that makes me particularly excited yet. However, I am excited that Cadence of Hyrule releases tomorrow at $25.

Music seems pretty good. Looks like the remixes were done by DannyB.

Heh, I was going to mention that since I received an email about it and people were recently interested in gaining some. In the end though, I ended up not playing in the Anniversary event.

Also, for those who still have Amazon Prime and grabbed the 3 months free of Nintendo Online when I posted it a while back, you are now able to claim the remaining 9 months to complete the full 12 months. I don't remember when the three months passed, but better late than never.

Looks like Grandia I & II HD Remaster is coming to PC/Steam. If you own Grandia II Anniversary Edition on Steam, it will be renamed to the HD Remaster, so you won't have to repurchase it. I'm not sure if there will be any changes to it on Steam outside of the name, but it doesn't look like it since it was essentially already an HD Remaster.

Also Grandia HD Collection is coming to the Nintendo Switch, which includes both games.

Newly added remaster stuff:

GRANDIA features
● Enhanced details to UI, sprites, and texture art
● Original cinematic videos receiving visual enhancements
● Widescreen support and customizable resolutions (only for PC)
● Steam cards and Achievements (only for PC)
● Audio: Japanese and English
● Language Support: Original English and Japanese plus French and German translation
● Gamepad and keyboard support with remappable controls (only for PC)

I suppose I'll get back into Overwatch a bit more for this event. My free box ended up being the new Honeydew Mei costume. Winstons is pretty neat. Been lightly keeping an eye on player built custom games from the Overwatch subreddit. Some interesting ones have come out of it that aren't the typical ones you see.

I don't think I've played the latest two or three added maps or the latest new hero (or two).

Could the physical media be the SSD? Selling games on that instead of discs? I would rather have full backwards compatibility (ps1-ps4) than 8k and VR because the old consoles are dying.

Nope, definitely not happening. Not unless you want to pay $100+ for each game. Plus resource wise when it comes to manufacturing them likely wouldn't be very sustainable. We already have issues with memory due to all these 'disposable' devices built with planned obsolescence in mind coupled with our shit ability to recycle.

Also backwards compatibility with older systems (1-3) that use a different architecture either requires them to build a proper emulator or to include even more hardware into the system, which won't happen. Good luck getting them to make a proper emulator because they're so incredibly fearful of pirates. They'll continue to only do it on a game by game basis like they have been until now more than likely until someone internally kicks them in the ass.

Beware of spoilers from the Utawarerumono Zan trailer for Utawarerumono: The Mask of Deception. It hasn't been posted here yet, but I figured I'd give a heads up.

One of the few musou games that I feel actually fits the gameplay of a musou game. Here's to hoping it's one of the better ones. I think I'll grab it at some point since it's Utawarerumono and I like the series. Not a big fan of musou games, but I can still get enjoyment out of them from time to time like when I played the first Zelda one.

Looks like you can finally change your PSN ID if you want:

Seems to cause issues in some games though, so beware and research before doing it.

Looks like God Wars: The Complete Legend is being ported to PC/Steam for release this June. They're making it a rather key point that they're adding in mouse and keyboard controls, so I expect them to be halfway decent unlike most other Japanese ports. They're also adding in the ability to re-arrange party members in the formation screen and auto-placement for characters on maps which isn't a bad thing either. I still can't get over the main characters portrait always looking like he's picking his damn nose though. I didn't actually beat it, but it was fairly enjoyable for what I did play of the original PS4 release.

Also Yakuza: Kiwami 2 was rated by the ESRB for PC, so we'll likely see that on Steam in the not too distant future as well. The first one seems to be rated rather well, so it'll be a nice welcome addition to Japanese games ported to the PC.

And finally, I'm a bit surprised that nobody mentioned anything about the SEGA Genesis Mini, but I guess that all went to another deals thread. No I don't need a link, I just don't visit many threads that often anymore.
