Houses/Apartments: Rent vs Buy

01 July 2017 - 01:25 AM

As a homeowner in my first year of ownership so far owning has had its drawbacks financially but likewise many advantages everywhere else. I rented for like 6 years before buying and sure my mortgage is a little higher than my rent was I also have double the square footage and tangible real estate/equity.

What are your thoughts on renting vs buying? What's the concesus where you live? It probably would be good to note where you live so we get an idea how that influences your opinion.

I live in southern New England and the home values are very high, for whatever reason. It's somewhat of a depressed area at that. Yet my 900 sq ft house built in 1940 with a single detached garage on a 6k sq foot lot is assessed at $145k. Did I mention it hasn't really been updated? Oh and my taxes are $2800 a year.

Still cheaper on average than renting, a 2 bedroom apartment runs $900 minimum with nothing included, in my area.

I'm not alone, am I?

I STILL play my GameCube. I bought it launch day and it's still going strong. I mainly use it for the GameBoy Player and Super Mario Bros and other GBA games, but occasionally I'll boot Wind Waker or something like Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 or Aggressive Inline.

I wish Nintendo would do another power console.

Got one. What first game to buy?

So I finally bit the bullet and bought a Switch at Best Buy. They only had three and the timing was right, I'm getting a bonus at work, so hey why not?

Here's the deal: budget says I can only get 1 game right now, and it can't be BoTW.

What do I buy? Go!

Edit: my wife wants to play along so couch co-op is good too

Home or Handheld Console?

Do you view the Switch as more one or the other?

I'm looking at it more as a handheld console, and when I do it seems like an awesome step up from their 3DS line. I can see myself mainly using it in handheld mode, even around the house.
