Paying zero of your actual dollars is an A+ CAG move in my book. But you can still do better, by buying games on sale with MS space bucks is even better. So your GPA is a 4.0. People buying stuff on sale is like a 4.2 or whatever. Still an A.

Neat! Those instructions remind me of the time when I upgraded my Xbox 360 hard drive to a 500 gig. Was anything wrong with your Xbox One's hard drive or you just wanted to try it out? The recent guest on the major nelson podcast said that his prototype xbox series X doesn't even show "loading" screens for older back compat titles. I suspect this is because of the high end SSD inside the xbox series X. Did you notice any speediness from the original xbox games?

Nothing wrong with the Xbox's original hard drive. I got it Holidays of 2018. Still pretty new. I upgraded because I got a new 4TB SSD for my computer and would therefore have a "leftover" 2TB laying around otherwise unused. (Chicken and egg situation there) I didn't try any Xbox games, but I should probably see how long the Mass Effect elevator ride takes.

Yeah, this continues to really bother me.  Going to do this fairly soon on my cyberpunk 1x.  Waiting to finish claiming all the digital content on the console first.

When researching this I've read a couple random posts of people claiming to have trouble with future updates after replacing the internal hdd.  But who knows, those people might not know what they're doing.

I was expecting to have to do an Offline System Update, which would basically be starting from scratch. I was surprised when the guide says you could drag and drop files from the old drive to the new one (after the new drive is formattted properly) and it would just boot up again. When it did, it took it a minute to load everything and get "right" again, but once it did, everything was quicker.

I had a much harder time when I took my pc from a HDD to an SSD.

So if anybody is wondering, replacing the hard drive with an SSD in your X is a pretty simple process. There's an excellent guide on ifixit to see what and how you need to disassemble. And then there's a guide with links to a script to auto format the new drive on pcsavants.com. It's pretty easy if you've taken apart electronics and can copy and paste a script into the windows powershell.

The results of this experiment? I doubled the internal storage and improved the speed with the SSD. The real noticeable difference is using the Xbox interface. Everything is quicker and loads the icons for your games much faster. I couldn't really tell the difference in-game, since I already run some games off an external SSD. But it seems to be comparable to those speeds. If you have the inkling and the small amount of tech-knowledge that it requires, I would say to give it a try. I followed the instructions to a tee, and my system booted right back up like nothing had changed.
