Honestly, the biggest people that're going to get burned is the people hoping to use it as trade bait. This is actually good thing for scalpers because it means they can short sell with less risk

It's impossible to get burned unless you pay above retail, since any amiibo can be returned to the store, at worst receiptless for store credit.

A story my friend likes to tell: a guy reserved 11 Halo 3 Legendaries to flip at his Gamestop. When he failed to sell any, he just returned them all. They sat in the back of the store until they were new used and the LE parts were thrown away/taken home.

Yup it's still available on amazon.com .. for 3 available left

... now OOS

In the case of amiibos, if it says X amount left, assume it's sold it out by the time you see it.

Did someone hack the eBay twitter account? They seriously put that link up there?

Thanks for the help, I work relatively close to a Gamestop, so I'll just run down as soon as I catch wind.  Thanks!

No problem. Just keep a general eye on things so you know when the shit hits the fan. It won't require insane timing like the Gold Mario did, but you may need to go on a lunch break or after work the day you find out.

That's too bad because it's part of the amiibo dictionary.

The dictionary made by nitwit reddit teenagers? Yeah, no thanks.

how can you say that with a straight face with a pikachu toy hanging on your wall. Lol!

I'll tell you how: for years, I did research for and worked on game collecting rarity lists. My friend and I wrote the Digital Press SNES list, which is the one either used everywhere or copied by everyone. Yes, I am in fact looking at it as SRS BZNS.

Unicorn is an idiotic term for rare, when no amiibo is actually rare considering the definition of the term as well as how it applies to general game collecting.

The crap 12 year olds come up with.

If only they had $50 they could buy many of the "unicorns". So much money!

This so hard, it hurts.

I absolutely loathe the term unicorn. No one here should use it because you're not 12 years old.

This is my first try at getting an Amiibo (Ness at that :wall: ) and was wondering when it'll be announced and what's the best vendor to go through to pre-order it?  Thanks guys.

First off, don't do this:

The best? Newegg. Definitely newegg.

Second, this is 100% correct:

It will be announced when you're sleeping, showering, eating, making a long distance call to auntie, shopping, reading, watching a movie, playing a game or otherwise not looking.

Here's the problem: the preorders for the next wave, which include Ness, will probably be gone at each retailer's site within an hour. It's that crazy.

Your best bet to avoid this craziness is this: when you hear that Gamestop preorders went up, that day or the next day if it's later in the day, IMMEDIATELY go to a Gamestop and preorder it in-store. Online GS preorders precede in-store by a business day or less - this was the case for the MP10 figures.

The window will be tight, but in-store Gamestop has lasted the longest for amiibos, the Majora's Mask LE and the New 3DS Majora's system.

Take it with a grain of salt (salt jokes aside), rumour mill is running rampant...

"Potential preorder for Silver Mario today at Gamestop?

Wanna hear something fun?

Went to gamestop on a whim today while out getting cosplay supplies. They had gotten in about 30 megaman's, 20 bowsers and had 2 sonic's left. Picked up a sonic and megaman and the guy behind the counter said that, "I may want to stop in early tomorrow, there's a new amiibo sku in their systems thats slated to release tomorrow".
So have fun with that."

Total bullshit from a single GS employee. Why does anyone fall for this nonsense?

You guys do realize that 99.9% of the Gold Mario's "sold" on eBay right now aren't actually being sold, right? They're absolutely all being won by shill and troll bidders that aren't actually going to pay. No one is going to pay those prices before the thing is actually released since no one knows how hard to find it will or won't be.

And how do you know this for sure? People are *very* stupid with their money. They could see a Sold Out and head right to eBay.

nope not fraud, custom amiibos are a thing.

Yeah, no one should have a problem with custom amiibos and their prices. People can charge what they think their time is worth. Some look professional, some look embarrassing.

So I wrote a small novel on rarity on r/amiibo and got, of course, middling feedback, so I will post it here for more of the same. I trimmed it down so it's not so much of a novel. Enjoy, or don't!

A New Rarity List

The proceeding will have two values assigned: Shelf and Release Rarity. Shelf Rarity will simply be rated as Easy and Difficult. Easy being figures you find in every store even after release; difficult being figures you won't find in stores, at all, after the wave has passed.

For Release Rarity, this concerns figures currently being released (in this case, wave 3), waves to come (wave 4, smb wave 1) and figures in unassigned waves. With stock more prevalent, the difficulty in finding some figures eases. These will be rated Common, Uncommon and Rare. Semi-Rare and Unicorn are unnecessary tiers.

Common will be in the same category as Easy – in every store and being restocked actively.

Uncommon will be in between – these will turn up in more stores than they won't but restocking will peter out over time as the wave passes. These will essentially move from Easy to Difficult. These will be the figures you can skip initially but need to grab before the initial supply dwindles.

Rare will be the same as Difficult, as these figures will likely never hit store shelves and are guaranteed to be difficult. Don't preorder at your own risk.

Release Rarity:

Common: Bowser, Toon Link, Mega Man, Sonic, Luigi (SMB), Peach (SMB), Bowser (SMB), Yoshi (SMB), Toad (SMB), Pac-Man, Wario, Charizard, Dr. Mario, Ganondorf, Bowser Jr., Jigglypuff

Uncommon: Sheik, King Dedede, Greninja, Zero Suit Samus, Falco, Olimar

Rare: Ike, Rosalina (EX), Lucario (EX), Meta Knight (EX), Shulk (EX), Gold Mario (EX), Silver Mario (EX?), Robin, Lucina, Pit, Dark Pit, Palutena, Ness, ROB, Mr Game & Watch, Duck Hunt Dog

Shelf Rarity

Easy: Mario, Luigi, Link, Zelda, Toon Link, Peach, Yoshi, Kirby, Pikachu, Samus, Fox, Donkey Kong Bowser, Diddy Kong, Bowser Jr., Toon Link, Mega Man, Sonic, Luigi (SMB), Peach (SMB), Bowser (SMB), Yoshi (SMB), Toad (SMB), Pac-Man, Wario, Charizard, Dr. Mario, Ganondorf, Jigglypuff

Difficult: Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Marth, Pit, Captain Falcon, Little Mac, Sheik, King Dedede, Greninja, Zero Suit Samus, Falco, Olimar, Ike, Rosalina (EX), Lucario (EX), Meta Knight (EX), Shulk (EX), Gold Mario (EX), Silver Mario (EX?), Robin, Lucina, Pit, Dark Pit, Palutena, Ness, ROB, Mr Game & Watch, Duck Hunt Dog

Please take this survey if you preordered any amiibos and fill it out to the end. I want to get an idea of which retailer is best for timeliness, proper packing and reliability as well as get a feel for the general state of amiibos.

Be sure to select No on any retailer page you did not preorder at and skip the remaining questions on the page by hitting continue at the bottom. Google forms doesn't have the logic to be able to skip retailer pages automatically if you don't select them earlier, so this is the concession.

Tomorrow, I hope to have the results for everyone.

Aaaaaand the Walmart Canada twitter said there will be no presale on the gold mario. This is assuming the same applies to the US and the Twitter account is to be believed (50/50 shot, really).

Fuck.

I wonder if you can make a profit buying up the meta's on ebay before news travels to the west coast

You'd be fighting eBay/Paypal/shipping fees to turn a profit. It'd likely be a mistake.

Heading out now to get my preorder.
