Glad I spent fifteen minutes catching up with all this claptrap. :whee:

Since it's now Monday morning and you're all in bed, I'm going to attempt another mini-discussion: Endless Space - has anybody really had any fun with it?

I'm not terrible at 4X/grand strategy games and I've had some great fun with Civilization V in the past. Endless Space should be a great fit for me as the interface is clean and easy to understand (once you've gotten used to it) and they've put a lot of effort into expanding the universe.

So why do I get my arse kicked every time a CPU player decides to attack me with anything slightly bigger than a school bus? Combat is essentially a form of rock-paper-scissors with you choosing one of several cards (Offence, Defence, Tactics, Engineering, Sabotage) and no matter what I choose it never seems to help (despite the pre-fight précis telling me I have a superior fleet).

The exploration, research, empire building side of the game feels great. But the combat, oh my lord I'm coming to hate it.

Talking point: is it worth staying with it? I feel like I get an hour into it every time, and then everything goes wrong. It's an annoyance when you only get time for a couple of hours' gaming each day.

Some pretty good deals on this site. I bought stuff from this site a few times, thumbs up from me.

Higlight Sales

Murdered Soul Suspect- $10

Among the Sleep- $6(not steam)

Wolfy- $36

Watch Dogs- $26(not steam)

Broken Age- $6(not steam)

That site looks incredibly shady.

So I tuned in to the Strain again this week. The show didn't blow me away, but I thought the new episode was a bit better than last week's, I'll probably stay for the season.

Anyone else watch? We talked about it a bit last week, so I figured I'd ask.
It was a total cheeseball, but I enjoyed it somewhat. I dig the vampire virus spin, even if it is a direct ripoff of I Am Legend (the book, not so much the movie, which hardly touched the vampire aspect).

Gotta say I laughed my ass off when the tower control guy looks at the airplane and says "It's like a building with wings!"

Haven't watched the newest one, but I'll stick with it. For now.

Your difficulty must be set too high. Start on the lower ones. I had zero problem with combat on lower levels. You have to work your way up, just like with Civ games.

You can also research tech that unlocks new combat tactics (cards), which can help you out quite a bit. You're still going to have to get used to the combat, outfit your ships properly, etc. It's a great combat system, it just takes some getting used to.

Re: difficulty - I'd struggled on "Normal", so I went with "Very Easy". Same problems, but took longer for me to feel the pain.

Re: tactic cards - I seem to research a lot but, thinking about it, I'm not sure I'm applying them to my ship blueprints. So I'm effectively fighting with a fleet of Vanilla combat ships. This would make a little sense. Hmmm.

I dunno what to tell you. The last game I played was ridiculously long and I never finished, but that was because I was aiming for one of the lengthier victory conditions. I sort of just spread out fast and brought my tech so high that I only needed defense fleets to chuckle at occasional assaults on my outlying planets, while I maxed out tech and further developed planets (I was just having fun maxing out planets with new tech, basically).

I was playing on easy I think, because when I jumped in on normal with no experience it was tough. But yeah, you can't expect to go through the game just fine with starter ships. You upgrade as you go, build bigger ones, etc. And you'll learn that some cards work better at different distances, some are riskier but have a better payoff if you succeed with them, while others are more conservative and don't cost you too much even if the opponent counters it.

It really is an amazing game with an awesome developer, mod support, etc. I regret not putting more time into it when I was familiar with it and better at it.

whenever there's a game i like but get stymied by difficulty, i cheat (cheatengine/trainers) sure, there's going to be people who'll tell you it takes away from the enjoyment, but let me tell you, i've been cheating at games for a while and it never gets old :)

So since I asked Dr Sasquatch for that Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi game and he was kind enough to send it along, I feel like I should post a little summary of my play experience here.

None of the Steam reviews do it justice.  There are a lot of people talking about the resolution and the dated graphics and whatnot, but I saw no mention of the worst flaw or the two most entertaining features.  First off, the flaw.  Enemies will occasionally just spawn with no warning.  It will almost always be directly behind you.  I died at least three times when a hellhound or werewolf popped out of my butt.  I think one reviewer who mentioned that you will occasionally "randomly die" may have actually noticed this, but not realized the cause.  I only noticed because one of the enemies spawned inside my character and no matter which way I turned, I was hitting them and seeing bits of them clipping outside my model.

That said, I will almost certainly pick it up again, because there is a wonderful physics interaction with your character and opened treasure chests.  Specifically, they launch you ten to fifteen feet in the air as you walk over them.  I find it hard to believe that nobody has mentioned in in any of their Steam reviews, because it's absolutely hilarious to watch.  And there's no way anyone missed it; the items stay inside the chests, so you basically have to walk on the chests to pick them up.  In addition, the game is kind enough to start you with the best weapon: your fists.  You can punch pretty much everything to death, and the range is better and the attack speed is faster than your sword.  If you've ever seen Fist of the North Star, the comparison is unavoidable.  The high attack speed and minimal animations lead to enemies going from standing up to dead in a single frame, usually being knocked back a couple of feet as well.

Playing through the game with the sword and gun was honestly pretty miserable, and I was about to call it quits and be disappointed.  But the fists turned the game from a tedious slog to a fast paced melee action game that's a ton of fun.  If anyone here tried it in the past and didn't enjoy the gameplay, I highly recommend installing it again and going all-in on punching.  And if you have it in your backlog and enjoy some silly bugs in your games, maybe bump it up your list a little bit.  I'm certainly glad I played it, and thanks again to Dr Sasquatch for giving me the chance.

<snip>
I've managed to do a bit of reading this morning and I think the crux of my problem lies with my fleets - I really, really need to upgrade them as I go along, I shouldn't get whitewashed as much as I have been doing.

Incidentally, this is awfully polite and well-mannered which is a nice change of pace.

I started playing Endless Space when it was up for Playfire Rewards and got sucked right in and have played about 11 hours so far.

I've never won the game outright, so I'm not sure I can give you real solid endgame advice, but Idiotekque is right in telling you to research and apply the upgrades. You should be able to hold your own. Pay attention to the loadout of the fleet that you're up against and the summary after the battle to see what is working and what is not.

I am far from an expert at this type of game, but I've managed to do pretty well throughout most of the game. It's a game that I'm very glad I tried and I intend to keep returning.

I felt the same way about Crusader Kings II. These kinda games can be a little unfriendly to a newcomer, but if you've got something to aim for (such as an achievement - letting your wife give birth to a fifth child so you can kill her off) it seems to be a lot easier to pick up, for me at least.

I think the problem lies with the learning curve. Sometimes after a long day in the office, the last thing I want to read is a length tutorial explaining about every minute detail on-screen. Trial-by-failure means you're at least doing something.

I know its not on Steam, but Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete is the way to go. If it must be on Steam, the newer releases are (V & VI), with Uplay attached.

EDIT: Titles are on GOG though! Pretty much everything Might & Magic is.

Random vote-for-key-game appears.

I will end the Free Steam Key promotion tomorrow 22.7.2014 6.00 PM (I live in GMT+2 Zone)
If you want to share, do it now.
As i said before, all keys will be given at the HeadlessCrew Group after this game is ready to launch.
After this promotion ends, i will write down all current members.
Those who join the group after this promotion has ended, don´t receive the key.
They do have a chance to win the key at giveaways.

Thank you all for your support!
Pretty sure he means GMT+3 / EEST, since he's from Finland according to his profile. ;)

Can I pay tomorrow as I'm too lazy to go get my wallet lol.

And can't we all just get along and hold hands!!!!!
Sure, just as long as you don't back out. That would be horrible!

I'd love 1000 Amps if possible.
Sent. Have fun!

I'm actually gonna have to back out of the auction, i know i feel bad to but I'm kinda broke now and i don't think i can run Prototype 2 that good anyway. You can give it to greendayrules.
No problem.

For whatever reason, I want this terrible mod. Oh yeah, +1.

I can pay my previous bid tier, but I'm of the opinion that it should be re-auctioned. That's super low. Your call, Sasquatch.
Sent, and yes. I will reopen the auction shortly.

I started playing Endless Space when it was up for Playfire Rewards and got sucked right in and have played about 11 hours so far.
Did the same, really enjoyed the exploration and colonization, but had a miserable time with the combat and the ship customization.

Thanks for the Endless Space chatter and tips everyone, think i'll fire it up again today.

I kept thinking about getting Endless Space when it went on sale, but the whole G2G thing and spending points to contribute your opinion on their website seemed like a huge turn off.

I was all excited when I got my key, then I went to the Steam page for the game and it looks pretty bad and has no cards :(
I didn't get a code yet, guess I was a little late. Doesn't seem like I missed anything but a +1 though.

Edit: Spoke too soon, there it is. Yay?

Nah. I had no hurry to post that, so I took a while.

I don't think that site checks it all. I bet codes will be taken before all real voters get. Just refreshing page lets you put another email.
Yup. I actually did vote for that one but it looks like keys are no longer available.

Oh geeze. That was fast. I got one about an hour ago and I did vote but I guess voting doesn't matter so much as being in the right place at the right time with some of these offers.

I think that url was only for voters of the Greenlight process, so they might have shut down due to the amount of people who got without voting and free.
Probably. I was a Greenlight voter and a group joiner. Didn't have to work much harder than the people who weren't I guess but it would have been nice to get my key. Oh well. Maybe they will figure out a way to add more keys later.

That's the thing. Some people likely would have bought it on Steam if that were an option. But Zenimax thought it was big enough that they didn't need Steam so they didn't list it there. The fact that it's getting added now I would guess is likely due to sales not being as high as they had hoped.
I know I'm late but..

There were a lot of things wrong with ESO in the past month.

Patches that were meant to fix something, often made things worst.

There was a patch to address issues in PVP, but what came of it was instakill on vampires by silver bolts users.

And someone made an add-on that made it extremely easy to spot one. It took them over a week to "fix" it.

But then after that, there was serious fps issues. I went from 60 to a steady 4.

Normally I don't even like PVPing in MMOs but that was probably my favorite thing about ESO.

So it made playing the game extremely frustrating, especially when you're Veteran and there's nothing else to do but PVP. The Craglorn stuff got old real quick and they eventually did fix the fps issues (last week), but sad to say I've already moved onto Wildstar. I was in the habit of playing ESO everyday but now I can't even get back into it. Also, there was a patch slated for this week I believe? But that got pushed back, and so there's no new content for a while.

I'd contact them directly in that scenario. Doesn't seem fair.

I feel much closer to Hal though so something positive has come out of the situation.
That was kind of adorable. Lemme know if you can't get yourself a key, I will use my fantastic bartering skills to get one since I still owe you about a hundred more favours.

Now it says "Check later see to see if more keys have been added"
Why you gotta ruin the cuteness Fuhrer?

Everyone should just use Carlmundo or do a competent website that gives keys with steam login (Robot Rescue Revolution). This way they can check that user is a member of group (and who he claims to be).

(Godandkey is generic and is meant for non-limited groups and anyone with link can use it.)

When I got my key the page literally said "first come, first served" so I don't think they will care. That's a serious revision of their original everyone who votes and joins the group by a certain point gets a key offer.

It did not make me login with Steam and as far as I can tell it checked nothing. They basically threw a bunch of keys out there and let the internet have at it until they run out. It's also bad for them because there was nothing to stop some resellers with a bunch of dummy addresses to grab a bunch of keys and I have no doubt some of them did.

All I can say is fuck Pixel Hunter. Those devs are shit.

I did the vote and comment for a key, but missed the three days their group was open, which wouldn't have even mattered, since they decided to just diarrhea their stupid game all over the internet anyway.

That should be the new Greenlight slogan Diarrhea Your Game All Over the Internet!

Speaking of diarrhea, gala Monday looks pretty bad. I'm on the fence for $1.50 but would be in for $1.27 if someone wants to split a 4 pack. If not I won't cry about it.

Since everything sucks today, here's Weird Al's parody of "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea:

"Fancy" by Iggy Azalea:
I've no love for the song, but Charli XCX dressed/done up like every late high school-early college girlfriend I had triggers my lizard brain every time.

Connected to nothing, I've been enjoying Titan Quest so thanks to those who've talked it up over the last months and am amused by how much time I spent looting the graves of my countrymen in the name of saving Greece from monsters. Happily, I've moved my grave-robbing operation to Egypt now so I feel less conflicted.

Carl actually passed on Pixel Hunter originally, because he was preoccupied with setting up promos for other games. He said he might help them distribute keys whenever he gets back from Greece.
