Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Anyone get a pending charge for their Atelier Shallie Plus game yet?

Got an email about a payment issue but there's nothing wrong on my end.
I also got an email about a payment issue, but that's because my credit card thought the charge was suspicious for some reason and blocked it. I notified them it wasn't and responded to the NISA store about it too. Hopefully it goes through soon.

That would be wonderful. Playing those two games on PSP/Vita after replaying the rest on Steam felt like a huge step backwards.

Sent from my ZTE Axon 7 using TapaTalk.
No kidding. I'm already excited for Trails in the Sky 3rd, but if I could play Trails of Zero on the PC, that would be awesome. I wonder if I'll have to buy a stand-alone release to play it or if there's a way to integrate the translations with the steam release. I'm not too savvy when it comes to those sorts of things.

Where does Trails of Zero Start?

I finished the first one with a full point playthrough on PC and currently making my way through SC when I dont get sidetracked by other games like Firewatch.

This is from a Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II gamefaqs board:

1202: Events of FC, events of most of SC
1203: End of SC, ~6 month timeskip and then the events of The 3rd
1204 February: Trails of Zero Prologue and Chapter 1
March: Zero Chapter 2, Cold Steel Prologue
April: Zero Chapter 3, Intermission and 4, Cold Steel Chapter 1
May: Zero Final Chapter, Cold Steel Chapter 2
June: Cold Steel Chapter 3, Trails of Azure Prologue
July: Cold Steel Chapter 4, Trails of Azure Chapter 1
August: Cold Steel Chapter 5, Azure Chapter 2
September: Cold Steel Chapter 6, Azure Intermission and Chapter 3
October: Cold Steel Final Chapter, Azure Chapter 4
November and beyond: Azure Fragmentary and Final Chapters, Trails of Cold Steel 2

I'm in the final chapter of Trails in the Sky FC, and have platinumed both Cold Steel I and II. I'm side tracked with FFXV, but plan on putting some time into FC/SC and 3rd when its out before tackling Trails of Zero w/ the fan translations.

Oh ok, i started Cold Steel 1 on my PS TV cause I do not have or own a PS3. Thinking of getting one so I can replay games that i never finished like Ni No Kuni : Wrath of the White Witch before the second one comes out.

I love the Trails series. Wish we could get the mash up like Ys and Trails, cause those look awesome.

I generally prefer just posting [customspoiler='this for a Trails timeline.']
kEyM3cg.jpg
[/customspoiler] Then Trails of Cold Steel III will start up in late 1206 with a time skip of approximately 1.5 years from Cold Steel II. It's a little easier to follow a visual aid.

Arc wise it looks like this:

Liberl:

Trails in the Sky -> Trails in the Sky SC (Sora no Kiseki FC & SC)

Trails in the Sky the 3rd (Sora no Kiseki the 3rd)

Crossbell (City-State):

Trails to Zero -> Trails to Azure (Zero no Kiseki / Ao no Kiseki)

Erebonia:

Trails of Cold Steel I -> Trails of Cold Steel II (Sen no Kiseki I & II)

Trails of Cold Steel III (Sen no Kiseki III) [Maybe standalone? Semi-sequel to Cold Steel I & II that continues the overarching story of Erebonia, but likely without the major Rean focus as his main story is finished. Will still likely wrap up some sub-plots from the previous two similar to Trails in the Sky the 3rd. Will know specifics as Falcom releases info or the game releases in Japan.]

Next arc is likely to be Calvard once Erebonia wraps up.

Thanks Draekon, this is definitely much easier to understand for the timeline.  I will probably have to replay Cold Steel I again to refresh some of the story

If you have a decent PC/Internet, you might look into the PSNow/PC thing. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details since I don't use it personally, but I believe Ni no Kuni is one of the titles on the platform. Here's a quick overview link - https://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/playstationnow/

Cool, thanks. Does "arrived at destination post" basically just mean it's in the country now?
Yeah, and that's likely the last update you'll get from the tracking number. Once it reaches customs it kinda falls off the radar for a bit. Depending on how much holiday build-up is left, it could take a week or two to get to you still.

Yep, got charged for it earlier in the week. Which means it's coming soon! :D

PlayStation Vita / PlayStation TV are also support PS Now devices, so as long as your internet is good, you don't mind a little lag, and would rather pay a subscription instead of buying an old console it could be the way to go.

Honestly I'd just say get a PS3, umbry, and look into some other games as well at some point.

I know this isnt Japanese, but how is Magna Carta 2 on 360? Ive been thinking of picking it up
I own the game and sadly have never played it. I've always loved the idea of the game, have read reviews, and watched several YouTube videos. From what I've read, it's a pretty decent game with the typical "amnesiac" protagonist, that looked a little dated for a 360 game. Other than that most have said it was a good game that will give you about 30-50 hours of playtime and rated generally around 3/5 stars.

It sort of looked like if you combined Lost Odyssey and Enchanted Arms. Let's hope it plays more like Lost Odyssey than Enchanted Arms.

I would describe the game as the definition of a JRPG. It literally contains all of the tropes that comes with the genre. Like, next to the webster definition of JRPG, this game would be pictured. However, I still really enjoyed it, as I played through the game twice towards full completion. It's an ARPG, where all battles happen in real time. The story is largely presented via a visual novel format, but with a tad bit more movement and such. Battle system is pretty standard, with your one different flair thrown in (a stamina system, which sounds worse than it really is). Tons of weapons to be had and bought, and the achievements are pretty easy to get (if that's your thing).

Battle system is enjoyable, story isn't all too bad, music is good and voice acting (for the most part outside of one character that might get on your nerves immediately) is decent. I never had to grind, although there are a few bosses along the way that will make you think for a bit.

Just make sure to follow a side quest guide if you're going to gun for 100% completion. While most are hard to miss, there are a few side quests that tricky to find and may mess you up.

I liked Enchanted Arms. The only problem with Enchanted Arms is that all the Golems you collect, you'll never actually use.

I really enjoyed it. As others have mentioned its filled with tropes and generic-ness, but it was still a really fun game. One of my professors brought it up last semester when we were talking about JRPGs, and I love how the thing he remembered most was the ultra korean art style of the illustrations

you don't get your 4th party member till you return to yokohama later in the game so yes you will be using the golems for a while. Hell until you are done with yokohama it makes more sense to use and level up golems since karin and raigar do not join until the sewers of london dungeon after yokohama. Ignoring that Karin sucks so there's not much reason to use her outside maybe boss battles since you have a number of raigar move set copies as golems that are better options. she had terrible stats, terrible range and if you shouldn't need to heal in the game much at all since hp recovers after battle thanks to lp points.

There are also a couple of golems that are pretty powerful like the 4 animals from different directions found in secret dungeons. Primrose is also crazy good if you bother to grind her stats up since she's neutral coverage wise so and her gun covers 9 squares out of 12 on the enemies side. Primrose is the one you get at the start of the game who's a maid with a Gatling gun. Her and yuki make a great team for screen wiping since they can both use the same gun skill.

The only reasons against using golems are that they have less lp and do not gain any passive skills to decrease lp loss and such once you get those and the unrestricted movement skill. Otherwise they can increase all their stats just like your human party members can so they aren't that different.

I enjoyed this game as well. One annoying character as said above, but other than that i had no complaints. Because of this game though, Johnny Yong Bosch will forever be known as Juto.

Finally popped in Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, and I think I solved the Dizzy DLC mystery from a few months back.

Basically no one knew whether or not the free Dizzy DLC we downloaded without having the game then would actually work, since it was listed as not bought yet, but it was in our purchase history (at least the PS3 version was.) The character icon would be locked if you didn't buy her yet, but for me, it shows a different portrait all together (Potemkin's) and when you select it, it says "Dizzy" but Sol Badguy comes up on the character selection screen. When you start the game, the intros say Dizzy, but she is invisible. Finally, she appears completely in the actual match, so the DLC does work, it is just very wonky. Possibly the strangest glitch I have ever encountered.

he will always be the disappointed frog to me :p   (bet no one gets the reference)

anywho guylardia from tales of abyss felt like one of his best fits roles wise.    I also imagine more people know him as the mc from bleach.

Hmm, mine looked fine when I tried it a month or so ago. Haven't touched it since I wanted to get through Xrd Sign story first. But I was curious and looked again and the character portrait in the selection screen and it is still fine. Is yours a one time thing or always happens?

Johnny Yong Bosch will always be Kaneda from Akira for me. Even though the first time I saw Akira was the 1989 release with Cam Clarke doing the voice of him, I always remember Johnny's. That dude has one of the easiest voices to spot in Anime/JRPGs. I've heard his voice when it was cast as "additional voices."

Whenever I think of Johnny Yong Bosch, Vash the Stampede is the first character that springs to mind.

For me nothing can ever replace that '89 version with Cam Clarke's voice work, but that later re-dub was still really well done.

This.

He may have had more prominent roles over the years, but Vash The Stampede was his first big break into voice acting if I remember correctly.
true vash was one of his best roles probably the standout preformance from him anime wise. I'm not between the two whether he'd be more known for bleach or trigun. as for akira haha I forgot he was kaneda in that since its been a couple years.

I think the funniest part is how him and yuri lowenthal are always in stuff together and a large % of the time they are cast as friends. I was surprised that he was ichigos friend in bleach. But its rare that yuri lowenthal gets to use some of his range. Especially with his type casting. laura bailey suffers the same fate disappointingly. I wish lust was the generic anime girl voice she was forced to use :D

Haha, so it isn't only me. I try not to pay too much attention to voice actors to avoid picturing other characters they have voiced before. There are just so few English ones, and his is very distinct and easily recognizable. I haven't seen any of the named anime above, except Bleach, but I watched it with the JP dub.. so I always think of Juto when I hear his voice.

I played Sengoku Basara 4 in English, since there was no other audio track, and he voiced Sanada Yukimura and all I kept thinking of was Juto lol.

There are quite alot of english va's actually. Its just that the same ones get used so much that it's harder to notice who you "don't" recognize when you are only looking at who you "do". Japan has the same problem if not worse since a small pool of va's have more roles per person than na does due to the larger number of jobs as dubbing isn't as common.

Just try looking at the main party and villain casts all together and you'll see that not all of them get reused. Tales of has been especially good with this as of late. vesperia on besides jude in xillia none of the party va's seem to be repeats and have been fresh va's in the case of milla.

One site I've found really useful is behind the voice actors since they include english and other countries va's per character as an option. Of course it's still hit or miss since many rpgs don't use va credits (tales of series i'm looking at you here!) so many entries are blank. But it's useful for what it does have. A number of tales of va's are unknown so if any of you happen to know judiths anises tears ect I'd be interested in hearing who they were and what else they have been in.

Amazon has :ps4: Fairy Fencer F as a gold box deal at 2:21 pm EST tomorrow. I was always interested in the game because of the girl in blue on the cover who wears the little cloth thing on her head that maids wear. Is it called a headdress? I have no idea. Maybe Midori Monkey will know.

Popped the game in again to check, and it's fine now. I should've saved that clip because of how strange it was. But yeah, it was a one time thing and works perfectly now. Thanks! I was also planning to use her online and psych people out.

Fairy Fencer F was an alright game. I snagged the PS3 LE from NISA when it was released and felt little need to buy it again for the PS4. It was a lot like playing a Hyperdeminsion Neptunia game, but without a lot of character development, and with the Neptunia grind.

**Edit** If I remember correctly, the PS4 release did seem to add more to the game that some said was more enjoyable. Also looks like they added two more slots in your party when battling.

The little frilly things? Pretty sure that is just a maid headband. I liked that game a lot on PS3. I actually want to get it again for ps4, but I mostly demolished it already, so I am waiting for it to be about $20.

Well, we've got games this week to list at least. Most people are probably interested in Future Tone so long as they haven't already bought it, but outside of that there didn't seem to be anything that really stood out. Though I suppose Low Magic Age could potentially be interesting, however I expect the translation to be sub-par whenever it actually hits. Not that there's often much text in those types of roguelikes anyways.

Other stuff that released without warning last week that are all on PC/Steam:
- Lily's Day Off (Visual Novel)
- Witch of Ice Kingdom II (RPG)
- Sayaka (Sidescroller / Action)
- Horror Hospital (Adventure / Horror)

Yes. It's an enhanced release with added content.

Draekon, isn't there also some old Kemco RPG getting a PSN port this week? I can't remember its name though.
It wasn't listed at the usual sites I grab stuff at. Did a search, found a PS Blog listing this weeks releases and added it along with a Fatal Fury port. It's pretty easy to miss stuff that isn't from a common/larger company. Especially Steam releases.

Yeah I had never even heard of it until Gematsu tweeted it earlier this week. Then I forgot about it until it started to nag at the back of my mind when I saw your list.
