The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

I had a $15 off coupon for Ebay, and it expired last week, so I used it for something I wouldn't normally pay full price on, so I went with DOA Extreme 3 Venus for the Vita, as a seller had it at $44 with free shipping. Well it shipped from HK on the 11th, and arrived yesterday, so 6 days total. Hands down my fastest Asian shipping ever, one for the record books. I have stuff ship within the US and not arrive that fast.

Yes they did. I don't have a time frame of when, but I do remember seeing a shipping notice from them not too long ago.
Thank you! I just checked my order and it was shipped. Now I just need to wait :)

Just wanted to let everyone know I got my copy of Parappa that shipped on 4/8 today. If everything goes just a smoothly, I would imagine we should be seeing Blue Rider by the end of the week. (Mine left on 4/10 too)

EDIT: From PA obviously, my bad!!

My copy of Blue Rider arrived today. The LE is decent size, had some extra stickers included in the package as well. Pretty happy with this LE - it's a good value for the price and I hope we see more games get this treatment from Play-Asia in the future. Already signed up for their next pre-order.

How was the packaging? Did they ship in a bubble pouch?

Nope, came in a decently sized box with a bit of extra packing material around the LE itself. Got the cheapest shipping option, so I imagine all of the LEs will be sent out similarly.

That's really good news. I understand iam8bit also upped their shipping to a cardboard sleeve around ps4 games and then ship that in a bubble envelope. I don't buy many of these low print games but it's nice to know when one of them happens that I want that the company providing it goes the extra mile on shipping materials.

Got my copy of Blue Rider today and very happy with the way Play Asia handled this release. My copy came with bubble sleeve and extra stickers then put in a small box. Plus I don't have a floater disc and received copy #413. Most copies should arrive in perfect condition. I plan to pick up all the Play Asia releases.

My first copy arrived today as well (ordered two due to the launch snafu), really nicely made LE, and very well packaged just like yours. Looking forward to getting Cursed Castilla when the preorders go up on 4/25, should be another nice LE!

Sorry for the mediocre quality, my phone is not the greatest. First pic is the packaging and the game itself for comparison, second pic is the game and stickers. Didn't know which you wanted to see, but figured the thread as a whole may find both interesting.

So for the Play-Asia physical exclusives, Soldner-X 2 was #1, right?  Just want to make sure I wasn't missing any (got that one through LRG so I am covered).  Looks like Blue Rider is #2 and Cursed Castilla EX is #3.

dont know the numbering but there are some physical copies like Shadow Beast, Alienation, and River City Melee. im not sure if they are play-asia exclusive though.

Shadow of the Beast never got a proper US release, unfortunately. I'm not even sure it got a PAL release, but the Asian version can be imported.

Bravo Play Asia, Bravo ! there's a new competitor in town for these "Limited edition/run" games

Well my package is being held at the post office, rats. Usually they leave it in the lockbox anyway but I can go grab it tomorrow.

Is anyone else annoyed that EastAsiaSoft is going with PlayAsia instead of LRG?
Annoyed is probably not the right word, but dealing with Play Asia and all of their quirks is not something I would prefer when LRG is perfectly capable of handling releases of this type.

Yeah. I feel like that Eastasiasoft got triggered or something because they weren't satisfied when Lost Sea and Rainbow Moon weren't selling fast enough or when they lost sales because there wasn't enough copies of Soldner-X 2.

anyone know which shipping courier do they use to track the package? play asia shipped my Blue Rider on the 10th and i couldnt track it on USPS.

I doubt the time to sell out was an issue since the Play-Asia releases sell much, much slower (in fact I don't think any are sold out yet).

Maybe they just want to work with a company in their hemisphere instead of half a world away?

They ship from Singapore, so the tracking numbers only work via Singpost until they hit US borders. After that you can't get tracking updates from anywhere, but it'll be delivered via USPS.

Regarding the whole LRG/P-A thing, I actually prefer titles from Play-Asia. I like not having to fight for a release during the five minute span orders are open, and so far PA has really shone on packing materials. Shipping time is a bit of a downer, but depending on their schedule LRG games can take just as long to arrive.

I'll be really interested to see how the competition to LRG impacts the market. Here's hoping we as consumers benefit and it doesn't turn into some huge melodramatic shitshow.

As a sidenote, Play-Asia also has The Sexy Brutale: Full House Edition. If you're in the US like myself, it seems to be one of the cheaper places to import it.

no. They have the right to do what they want
Sure that is probably true, but just because someone has the "right" to do something doesn't mean you have to like it. I would give an example but the thread would implode in a matter of minutes.

Not saying your thought is bogus, just that the reason needs some TLC.

It's all good, as I'm in it for physical where there was none before, and the Play-Asia prices are good, and they ship well. My only issue with them, is their customer service is beyond ass, so if there is ever any issues, that would be a red flag for me personally, but otherwise I'm glad to see others in this sector, as it shows the need and desire for physical games.

I also doubt I'll get many releases, as Soldner was the only Vita game they have offered, and I already had the LRG release, so I past on that one, and the others have been PS4 titles which I'm not collecting, so until another Vita release shows up(which I doubt will be many), it's not a real issue for me either way, but I'm glad to have PA in the mix, just for the sake of options.

Did anyone who signed up for the Cursed Castilla pre-order see the latest email from Playasia? Only 3,000 copies and they are claiming they had a larger number of people sign up than they've ever had before. Yeah, it could be marketing hype, or it could be like an LRG game that sells out in less than 5 minutes. Gonna have to be on it with this one. Especially after how well Blue Rider was done, I think more and more people are going to be jumping on the PlayAsia boat with these exclusives.

Yes I got that email today. They are also allowing two copies per person, which might cause it to sell out faster. This is a GnG style game, a good fit for a physical release. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to get one or two copies, but it looks like another nice quality LE.

As for Blue Rider, it's a slower Shmup, the ship feels a little sluggish when maneuvering, but I like the style and it's easy to adapt to the different play style. The graphics are nice, reminiscent of older arcade games. Well worth it to me.

What makes people think Cursed Castilla will sell out quickly? They still have copies of Blue Rider in stock.
Play-Asia exclusives are increasing in popularity now that they've started to establish themselves in the market and I believe this will be a lower print run. Don't remember the exact number, but I think I saw someone say this was limited to 3000?

Yeah 3000 is the print run on this one. This is from the email I received.[attachment=26376:Screenshot_2017-04-22-00-55-09.png]

Blue Rider was 2,500 and it's still in stock...

I'm picking my copy up today!!!#!# can't wait to play it.

Soldner is still in stock as well, and was limited to 3000. That was announced and released pretty soon after LRG, so they are neither lying about the numbers produced, are these releases are selling very, very, slowly. So while this latest title could go fast, history shows otherwise.

The PA version of Soldner is beautifully done, as is the Blue Rider LE. These games may not sell out immediately, but I think they'll sell down over time. As of right now there appear to be 6xx Soldner copies left, and 7xx Blue Riders.

I should tell PA to cancel my YS preorder and send me Blue Rider instead
Just friendly email PA. It's possible you can swap out YS pre-ordered and get Blue Rider instead. Tell them you don't want to mess up with your credit charge. Provide PA Blue Rider Link item. I sure they swap out with out any question. I recently email requested swap out Ys pre-ordered for Curse Castilla EX. They will do it whenever the item ready for pre-order ;) Friendly Email always work ;)

If LRG released Blue Rider exactly like Play Asia it would most likely be $45. Play Asia has a good thing going and I hope it continues to grow a great library of games.
