Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

PlayAsia's update on Omega Labyrinth Z. Same fate could happen to the PS4 PAL version.

Pure greed basically. I, for one, am not buying at that price and I hope other people do the same. Standard edition at $23.99 will be fine for me :)

If Soedesco wants to see how to do a CE right, they can look no further than the recent Shantae: Half Genie Hero Ultimate Edition release for the Switch. You get the game with all the DLC, hardcover art book and full soundtrack CD for $31.99 after GCU (or $39.99 base price). Now that's a helluva deal and something I will gladly support every time!
If only there was a PS4 physical version of Ultimate Edition (for the US). I would have supported that! I know there's a standard Shantae already, but xseed/wayforward could have repackaged the original with the extras and called it a day (artbook, dlc pass, ost).

Their use of "At the moment" "at this time" makes me a little suspicious, but here it is just the same.

Obligatory:

This is cool I guess, but is this why the NS isn't getting any proper VC? So they can keep releasing these mini's every few years with a new set of games? Holy shit, "N" is truly the evil villain in a Bond film, as who else could come up with these off the wall schemes to milk their fan base? LOL

EDIT: And yes, I know this is just for a special situation, so we probably won't be seeing anymore of these(hopefully).

well i know a statement was released that even though eu is banning it because of its games law, they said it just means a physical release wont happen and can still do a digital release but since the publisher i believe is pqube which is eu, even though they may sell more in the u.s., its still like jp were eu comes first so they may screw out fans everywhere else to be fair

It was banned in a few countries, and on track for release in others (why a EU version was still listed). People from countries where it was banned like the UK were planning to import the EU version from another country. PQube is UK. They said they planned to go ahead with releases that they can, like the US ESRB rated 'M' version. They've never indicated that they may cancel all of them "to be fair"

"We just spent all this money licensing and translating a video game, but because V1tafan1995 is going to say we betrayed them releasing digital only while tagging Limited Run Games we're just going to not sell it."

Sigh. I still vividly remember the excitement I expressed here when Omega Labyrinth Z was announced for the West, and another CAG actually joked "this would make TooPoor very happy"

All that would be for nothing, as it seems.

Omega Labyrinth Z orders from Play-Asia were cancelled saying there wouldn't be a PAL sku and their twitter account replied there is no information as to why the orders were cancelled. In addition the UK, Germany, and Australia have banned direct sales of the game through their classification boards. Nothing else has happened other than speculation. The ESRB gave it an M rating which clears it for release.

Ya know I could have sworn that game released with a titty mousepad on that Iffy Online Store, but I must be thinking of something else.

Bappt summarized it pretty well. That tweet out of context looks pretty misleading, sorry.

Play-Asia sent emails to people saying their PAL orders were canceled. The tweet from Play-Asia saying it was an error was referring to the cancellation email. Basically they're saying "Our mistake, it's not canceled"

All I was saying was that their use 'At this time' and 'At this moment' made me suspicious, but that's just speculation on my part and nothing more.

The Blazblue Cross Tag Battle Live Beta is up on Switch for those interested.

Weekly VN releases:

First of all Frontwing released Momoiro Closet on Steam and currently is 10% off. It is about an average guy who finds out the student council president is an otaku or something. It looks good and has an 18+ patch. Note there is only one main girl and guy character.

Sekai project released a doujin VN 2236 A.D. It also has an 18+ version on Denpasoft, but I don't think that is the main focus of the game. It is about 99 emails from a girl without telepathy in a world where everyone uses it. It looks really interesting and weird and likely a mind blown type game. I will get the 18+ version, but I really don't think it's needed. They both have 10 percent off the price.

Also there is now a patch for Sweet Home. It still may crash....I haven't played it yet.

That should be all.

That looks like an awful lot of fun. I had completely forgotten about Bloodstained, let alone the 8 bit game.
I didn't forget about Bloodstained, as they send updates on a regular basis, but I had completely forgotten(or just never knew), about the 8-bit game. I will say as a throwback, that looks damn good, and it looks like whomever made it, took the source materials to heart. It also looks like they saw a game like Shovel Knight, and said great things can be done, even with 8-bit graphics. I'm very much looking forward to the 23rd now, can't wait.

Any word on this getting a physical release? Maybe a LRG or something? Looks fun.
I was going to ask the same question as well, most people think this looks like a better game than Bloodstained, so I think physical would do great. I'm sure right now their main concern is getting the main game out physically and to all pledge consoles and then I'm sure it could happen at some point.

Inb4 it's just them ruining Seiken Densetsu 3 or Legend of Mana the way they did Secret of Mana.

So with this casting, the producers are saying is the movie's quality is going to be something like on par with the Resident Evil flicks?
Seriously... I can't stand her.

It's Mothers Day, so don't forget. Quite a bit of console stuff this week. Most of them probably aren't Japanese, but their themes or genres are fairly similar. I wish Dragon's Crown & Chamber of Time weren't $50, otherwise I'd pick them up at launch. Was really hoping for $40 with a 20% discount.

Other stuff that released without warning last week or I overlooked it (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):

She seemed fine in Fifth Element, but I haven't seen her in anything else that isn't a shitty video game knock off, so it's kind of hard for me to judge.

EDIT:
Wait, no, apparently she was in Zoolander, which I know I've watched, but I suppose I must have blocked it from my mind because I can't really recall anything about that movie you couldn't learn in a trailer.

Probably way less than that, actually.
