Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-28
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

I generally don't expect any third-party AAA game that I care about to hit the game day one. I think there has been literally zero? That was more what I meant. The mediocre Jojo game that I'll probably play for 2 hours total was not high priority.

It's been a handful of first-party games and some day one indies that made the discount price OK in the past. This year I think that will only be Avowed and Indy, and I would definitely have waited on Indy otherwise.
There are still some bigger day one games we’ve gotten like The Show 24, Persona 3 Reload, Eiyuden Chronicle, Lies of P, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty. Those were all $50+ games - a few $70.

Don’t expect it all the time but it’s nice to have sprinkled in through the year.

Anyway, to each their own as far as GamePass. It floats my boat. 😀

But maybe it sinks for what you want out of it.

Also still buy plenty of games on all platforms that I know won’t be on either service anytime soon. Never expected services to completely replace buying games.

MS posted an article about the non-BC discounts. They will remain until the store shutdown, with more titles added on June 18 and July 16.

Their list has 66 while the original posted list had 61. Checking for the differences.

That's great news that the discounts should remain until the shutdown. Gives me time to track down my old working 360 so I use credit to buy a couple of random games that I will likely never play.

The only downside is that we have too much time left so I won't bother rushing to get it done (just in case any discounts get bigger in later waves) and I will almost definitely forget to buy anything.

Well, you'll have reminders when the next batches get discounted, then there'll probably be more discussion in the final days.

Honestly I think what we'll see with Game Pass is more tiers and they'll probably figure out some way to shoehorn advertising into the lowest tier. They can't not put Call of Duty on there now but they'd also be insane to put it on a $10 a month sub so at very least I'd expect it to be an Ultimate exclusive initially. Frankly I think EA does it right, if you want day one you pay extra, otherwise you wait a year and it's on the cheap tier (if anything a year has always seemed fast for some stuff).

They can absolutely do that. and they probably won't put the new one on there.

Just like how World of Warcraft has had a successful paid subscription program going on for 19+ years now.

You think they can make up 20mil. in full retail copy units sold in additional Gamepass Ultimate subscriptions? Sure do that if you like losing tons of money. That's right around a billion dollars, with a single annual iteration.

What they WILL eventually do, is tout how ALLLLL of the previous Call of Duty games are available on Gamepass.

Ok, identified the differences between what they posted in the article and what was found yesterday. There's Just Dance 2014 and Just Dance Kids 2014, which were found on TA yesterday. They list Space Invaders Infinity Gene, though that's backward compatible. Maybe they mean Space Invaders Extreme, though neither of them appear to be on sale. Then there's the Voodoo Dice I found yesterday, although it's the Japanese version. The news article links to the US marketplace but using the GUID for the JP version. US one isn't discounted, but if you change the URL from en-us to ja-jp, it goes to the discounted JP version.

What are the two marketplace links to Voodoo Vince US and JP? I can't find either! Search only pulls up the Remastered version.

So picked up the woot deal of Just Dance 2023 edition for 5 bucks. Wife loves dancing but isn't a gamer so I figured she could give just dance a try.......man what a messy main menu. First time ever getting a Just Dance game. Some songs are free while some tracks are paid and some are for ubi plus?! Probably just need to spend more time with it but seems pretty overwhelming.

It is pretty confusing. You get around 40 songs with each Just Dance title that are free to play. The rest of the songs are part of the Just Dance+ subscription service. They advertise it to you heavily. But I believe they still offer a 1 month free trial you can activate through the menus. That will give you access to everything on there, except for the 40 songs that released on Just Dance 2024. The subscription doesn't give you access to the newer games if you only have an older version.

They messed up a good thing when they changed the name of the service from Just Dance Unlimited to JD+. The subscription used to grant you access to, just about, their entire back catalog of songs. Now they have to re-license each and every one and they're slowly putting them back, but the catalog took a huge hit.

Yeah I agree. I can't wait to see how many Xbox customers there are that are willing to pay for full priced Final Fantasy games. It's really going to be an eye opener for SquareEnix and everyone.

Why should anyone give a shit about a franchise that treats them like a second class citizen? All of the Persona and Yakuza games launch day one on Xbox. Between Sega and Square Enix, which company is thriving and which one is struggling? Between Persona, Yakuza and Final Fantasy which franchises are growing in popularity while the other went from being the most popular JRPG on the planet to now being considered "niche". 😅

Elden Ring and Dragon's Dogma sold extremely well on Xbox. Players will show up for good games. The only good news to come out of Square Enix is that at least now Dragon Quest 12 is guaranteed to come to Xbox.

They can absolutely do that. and they probably won't put the new one on there.

What they WILL eventually do, is tout how ALLLLL of the previous Call of Duty games are available on Gamepass.

They've been doubling down recently on "everything comes day one" so if they backtrack in a couple months on Call of Duty it would be a pretty big admission game pass is failing. I'm not saying I think it's a good idea, just that MS is still pretty heavily invested in the game pass experiment and I expect them to find alternatives beyond just continually increasing the price of what currently exists. I don't think anyone paying $10 or less a month for a sub should expect day one AAA games, I certainly don't, but in a premium tier (perhaps even beyond Ultimate) and then available a year or 18 months later on the regular tier seems like a good compromise to me.

It also wouldn't surprise me to see them have more "add-ons" to Game Pass like WoW, possibly even with a discount ($10 a month with game pass or something) but it certainly will never be included unless they just went full f2p which seemed a lot more likely a decade ago than it does now. WoW also has the token so a big portion of the regular players can play "free" supported by the whales and casuals and that won't ever cross over from Battle.net (though lord knows I wish it would, I'd kill to buy game pass with my leftover b.net credit).

I would guess we will know what is happening with CoD in June. The second showcase is definitely for the game, and "E3" is still where Xbox team is to make its biggest announcements.

GamePass changes could probably go either way.

I think with Sarah Bond coming out after all the rumors last week and doubling down on all first party games going to GamePass that CoD will definitely be there. Or she wouldn’t have doubled down on it.

I Mean she also congratulated Tango Gameworks on their 14 years of service before a month or so later that company got put on the chopping block. So I'm gonna be skeptic...

Also beginning of this year XBox had all those rumors that straight up did more harm than good and they just let that shit stew for over a week before giving a pointless state of business podcast when they could've done a simple Tweet. Really the message of XBox this whole year has just been muddy and non-sensical.

Speaking of GamePass, Chants of Sennaar is up. One less game on my wish list. One more game tile to look at in my backlog.

No, I’m actually looking forward to finally playing it!

Oh, I also started playing the Towerborne beta. It’s a pretty fun new take on the Castle Crashers formula. Lacking story so far in the beta but I’m anxious to play the full game from what I’ve played.

It's certainly up to you to choose how you spend your time and money but if a game is in Game Pass for a year plus and you haven't played it, you probably weren't that interested in it in the first place.
Totally agree. I don’t buy many games anymore because there’s not much that grabs my attention. Gamepass has given me a chance to play games I never would have and loved. There also some that come day one like Little Kitty, Big City that I play day one.

Didn't Microsoft testify under oath during the FTC trial that they would be putting COD into Game Pass as part of the ABK deal? Something about having more players having access to Call of Duty yada yada yada.... yep pretty sure they did.

So I have two Series X hooked up and my 4070 Super as well and still somehow I play my Series S the most. It just feels right playing indie and older titles on that thing and I can't explain why. It's just a fun console. With that said, DJ Max Respect I'm calling you out and saying you can go to hell and die because there's absolutely no reason why you need over 50gb of internal storage space.

I personally don't remember seeing that anywhere, but I remember them saying they wouldn't lay off a bunch of people then proceed to lay off a bunch of people shortly after.

Elden Ring and Dragon's Dogma sold extremely well on Xbox. Players will show up for good games. The only good news to come out of Square Enix is that at least now Dragon Quest 12 is guaranteed to come to Xbox.
Not sure if it was mentioned here but DD2 did well enough it's now considered a 'key franchise'. Not sure whether to be worried or thrilled given it's Capcom. Pretty sure we won't be waiting 12 years again for a third game, and likely a bigger scope.

Blizzard actually just gave us a graph without numbers (as it that would stop anyone from figuring it out) of subscriber history and WoW would have been F2P today had classic not saved it. Even with classic numbers they STILL dipped into the 4m range last year, or the second lowest point in its history. Keep in mind, China is a large slice of that number and managed differently than US subs so if they wanted to they absolutely could put it on Game Pass here. They're inflated at about 7m subs currently because of the two expansions coming very soon but history has shown there will be a sharp dropoff soon after the launches. War Within will very much be a crossroads of whether people stick around this time because there's only so much classic can do now that it's going to be up to Cataclysm, a wildly unpopular expansion historically.

Whatever happens, I think WoW is skating by at this point with no tricks left to save it.

The thing to remember with COD on Game Pass is that it truly only impacts sales on Xbox and PC. Sony made such a fuss about their sales leads me to believe that a good number of them aren't going to be instantly lost to the sub. Just because it exists on the sub doesn't mean people will change their habits outside the MS ecosystem and deluxified sales may INCREASE due to the sub taking care of the retail copy. They just need to stay the course and let things play out, which is their plan. To balk now would just destroy everything they've worked for.

So in reverse sacrifice fashion, I put Wizard with a Gun on my wishlist the day before it went on sale for half off for the MP patch coming this week. Easiest pickup ever since it has coop already and it's actually pretty good once you get going. Slow start but unlocking a few options for mods and seeing how the drip works for cosmetics/furnishings, we're hooked. Has a perfect balance of rogue-lite mechanics I can get behind with only non-equipped item loss for dying. Playing solo would probably change the difficulty, but it's still very challenging in coop if a player goes down since there's a time limit per map.

Solid 8/10 from the 10 or so hours played now and we only saw the first boss last night, which we're so not ready for. For $18 and all DLC, definite recommend.

Time will tell if that goes anywhere good, Capcom juggles like 5 key franchises and most of them bounce around from good to bad to good over the years. I think it will still be a while if only Itsuno is making them, unless they go directly into a sequel now instead of DMC.

talk about selective hearing lol.

I watched the Sarah Bond interview the day it happened. She didn't confirm anything. She said "You get every single one of the games we build day one in game pass". She didn't even mention Call of Duty at all. and tried to dodge the question completely. When pressed on Activision specifically in a follow-up question she said, “Across the whole slate…you’re going to see some really amazing things.”

Didn't Microsoft testify under oath during the FTC trial that they would be putting COD into Game Pass as part of the ABK deal?
That could be anything. Do you guys even hear yourselves?? ugh.

Nothing has been confirmed except "Diablo 4 is the first AB game coming to Gamepass". Nothing has changed since then. Just previous industry quotes from Phil saying "They were unable to complete the groundwork for bringing Activision games to Game Pass," and "There is a lot of work to be done before it can bring Activision Blizzard games on Game Pass". They have not committed to anything, and could change direction at any moment.
What's really funny to me is when I read quotes or clickbait reposts suggesting that "Activision" is a developer, or could be considered as "first-party development". They are a publisher, and they are a holding company with multiple subsidiaries. Well they were, anyways. It also sounds really weird when MS execs refer to Blizzard's portfolio as "our games" on occasion. Convenient when they are, convenient when they're not.

The bottom line is that it is crystal clear that right now at this moment, Activision-Blizzard franchises do not currently count as "In-house, first-party, development studios (going day1 on gamepass)". That could change during any upcoming press conference event. But as of this moment those games are not part of the promise.

Yes, we all know and understand that some AB games will be on Gamepass eventually.

So I guess all the press articles including the Insider Gaming article in that thread were wrong? IGN, Bloomberg, Pure Xbox … all stated it.

From Insider Gaming:
“In a new interview with Bloomberg, Sarah Bond has confirmed that every first party game, including Call of Duty, will still launch on Game Pass.”

Apparently it’s the press that has selective hearing. Haven’t seen any corrections.

I really don't care about Call of Duty put on game pass or don't.

Who Cares Tommy Lee Jones GIF

The series is something I just don't bother with anymore. I'm too old for competitive multiplayer focused games and the story content is too short to justify a purchase. I would maybe try one if they were on game pass but I also don't have 200GBs of hard drive space available for these games. So most likely not going to play any of them.

If Xbox wants to increase Game Pass subs and see some growth they should put Call of Duty games on the service. There are no Activision games on the service from what I can tell. It is crazy that the only game available at this time is from Blizzard, Diablo 4. Where is Diablo 2 Remastered or Diablo 3, Crash games and Spyro, Tony Hawk or even the older Call of Duty games. I know they bought them for King mainly but put some of that game catalog on Game Pass already. It is crazy they haven't yet.

I mentioned this before but I honestly think Xbox needs to focus on a handheld device. Game Pass literally anywhere natively on a dedicated Xbox Handheld. It's been something they have been sort of talking about, so try something different because what they are doing isn't working and growth is flat lining.

I really liked the AC Shadows trailer I'm actually pretty excited about it now. Only downside would be the live service aspects. Supposedly the map size is similar to Syndicate. The rpg elements of the new games with the smaller map of the older games is what I want. Also having two protagonists one more stealthy og gmes style and one more aggressive new games style are cool too.

Why do you need an internet connection for first install? Is the full game not going to even be on the disc? Still not terrible as its not like im going to uninstall it and then want to reinstall when i dont have internet

Nothing new. This is the way it's been for the majority of games for years now. Small download on disc with the main portion needing to be installed via over the internet download.

Since the discs contain so little useable data anymore they should just switch them over to CDs that contain the games soundtrack along with the license key for the game. I think at least one of the old Wipeout games on PlayStation 1 could play the songs in a normal CD player. You just had to skip the first track that was the game data. I never really tested any other discs but I assume a lot of them used a similar set up.

Of the GP items dated for this morning that didn't leave, This War of Mine: Final Cut moved to Aug 1. Little Witch in the Woods moved to the end of the month, but that was already confirmed in the official leaving list.

Recent additions that got standard dates :

Kona II: Brume - 2025-05-01
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition - 2025-05-01
Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons - 2025-05-16
PlateUp! - 2025-08-16

Xbox version is on two discs, so it seems most the game will be there, but they need a crunchy day one patch to make the game less janky. It's a way to make sure people get a better working game without a delay. Most people would rather a delay, but we have seen more this year than ever that shareholders matter more.

Starting with Modern Warfare 1 you are given options of which portion of the games you want to install. Just install the single player for a smaller download. The sp is highly enjoyable.

If they plan to, they need to act fast because Steam Deck already has two ways to play Game Pass games (and a way to play your entire library), either via browser login or XBPlay which my wife uses to stream games like a PS Portal. They have an equivalent for PS as well so nobody needs to even buy a Portal if they already have a deck.

LOL, agreed I am not a CODbro.

A handheld would be interesting if you could hook it up to a big screen like the Switch, so both portable or not depending on the situation.
Something that must be said and isn't actually talked about a lot is that remember, handhelds are limited in power. I.e. they aren't capable of 4k so if they do make one, using it with a dock would be inferior to just owning an Xbox. We thought about getting a dock for the Steam Deck but research showed unless you're dying to play Steam on a TV, the resolution will be bad and wasn't worth it.

Regardless, she worded it with only one interpretation of first party games will be on game pass day one. COD is first party. If they try to walk it back then it would simply be a lie.

I don't think that Xbox really cares where you play their games at this point really. You can already play Xbox games natively on handhelds like the Steam deck, ROG Ally and Legion GO. The ROG Ally already even comes with 3 months of free Game Pass.

There's rumors that next gen Xbox will have a regular high end console and their low end console will likely be a handheld keeping with the two SKUs. The Series S is already so tiny you can practically palm it with one hand. Just need to get it into a handheld form factor and you're golden. I think that's what Sarah Bond was talking about when she said, ‘We will deliver the largest technical leap you have ever seen!’. I don't think she's talking about raw power. I think she's talking about the technology.

I wonder why it's worded the way it is. It's not what it normally says for games that require online to install. It makes me think it needs an authentication from Ubisoft servers on top of needing a "function" patch from Xbox/PS/Steam.

IDK streaming games on steam deck Gamepass and Playstation is a mixed bag, same with my phone or tablet. I have a good internet connection and still get too much lag and/or artifacting with game streaming it is just not there yet for me personally. I know people have decent luck but i just don't most of the time. It is playable sometimes but not ideal.

The dock for the steam deck is excellent. My wife bought it for me a b-day gift last year and I think Steam Deck looks great on my 65" LG C1.
If you have a 4K TV, the Steam Deck will output 3840 x 2160 in a 16:9 aspect ratio. I think it looks really nice.

I would be perfectly fine if it came with a dock that provided extra juice when using the system on a big tv. Really curious what the Switch 2 is going to look like next year and if they do something like that with a dock.

That would be wild if Microsoft developed a new handheld. I've just recently come around to the idea that I now want a Steam Deck. But I want an OLED. They've already come out and said the 2.0 won't be launching with an OLED screen. So I'm not sure what I'll do now, prolly wait. That's the main appeal of the Nintendo handheld is the fantastic colors and display. Previously with the PS Vita too. You're running a low horsepower device but the games look GREAT. This whole "The most powerful console ever created," is not needed.

Valve copied the wildly successful Nintendo Switch. It appears that they have sold "multiple millions" (lol) of Steam Deck units. It would make complete sense for Microsoft to do the same. They could market it better.

But we are rapidly approaching a time where some of these companies (manufacturers) aren't going to make it. Some homogenization and condensing is inevitable.

I'm waiting for some summer bomb announcement.
