07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. I agree that arguing about penny guides or not getting a $4.99 game for free AC isn't worth it. You just roll the dice each time you get to the counter. For me most times it works just fine, but some times you just crap-out.

Time to walk away and try another day, or even better another BestBuy if you have more than one. :)

That's so true. They don't look at the monitor at all 90% of the time. Had 10 penny guides yesterday, and one $10.00 game...total about 11.xx with tax. He couldn't care less that I just got 10 game guides for 10 cents. And most of the time these are full-time employees ( I know as I've been to the store very early in the morning, and in the evenings). If they don't care, certainly the part-timers could care even less.
However, there're some stores that you know are not worth walking into on most days. In Queens, I won't bother with the BB store near the Queens Center mall. The manager there is a tight ass that pulls guides every single time, and always looks at you funny (or asks his workers to do so) whenever you use a coupon.

You do bring up a bigger question, which is if the item's on the shelf, tagged correctly or incorrectly, should it be sellable? I'd like to think so, though I've heard so many opninions on that, damned if I know what to believe anymore.

I've found that if it's on the sales floor/shelf, and you don't act like a complete jackass about it, most places will normally let you get at least one.

Not that I'm a retail store, but my policy as a customer is if it's on the shelf, it's there to be sold. If it's not intended to be sold, then it should not be on the floor.

Otherwise you could follow a slipperly slope that a store can run sales (unadvertised :roll:), and when you bring it up to buy it (assuming its a loss-leader or some such), they can claim it shouldn't be on the floor, take it from you, and put it back when the sale is over.

Thanks to my new favorite CAG, MightySlacker, I was able to pick up a BRO guide at the Macedonia BB that he had stashed for me. No other guides left, due to him or the employees.

Better yet, got 4 GGCs (there were 8 on the rack), asked for $5 on each, she only put $5 on three of them, so I got a "free" one without trying. Hopefully these show up in my store soon so I don't have to drive to get them. Brain Age for $15 next week!

I usually do walk away, but this time without asking, the game and my coupon were bounced from one person to another. As far as the guides go, I just had to ask at this particular store. No one ever gives a clear answer, or at least one that can be translated to english. Every other BB sells their guide stock at a penny and doesn't care. This store just has pissed me off in the past, so I do try to stick it to them when I can. The only upside to today's conversation with the store manager was that I did have a prime example of how his sales staff is rude and snooty. When I finished my story, he did recognize who I was talking to and said he would go have a "talk" with him. Any other BB and I wouldn't have cared... but this one just annoyed the hell out of me.
 
HAY GUYS! Metroid Prime: Hunters and Tetris DS are "on order" and should be here any day now!

What the fuck? I ask about Odama (the guy on the phone had no idea what he was doing) and another employee is yelling out "any day now!" So I take it that's the official response to any questions of preorders arriving? This is awesome!

The annoying thing is, the DM's office is only open 9-5... and I don't think anyone at work would appreciate me bitching about video games on the phone in the office, so it's going to be rather difficult to complain about this.
 
Went back today to check if there were any Pokemon XD guides, and found 2, but neither in good shape. The one with the large tear on the cover is going to my stepson, and the other is going to my trade list. However, that one has a minor tear on the cover (bottom center). The rest of the guide is in good shape.
 
Okay, ive manage to get lucky with this drop in the BB in the rich part of town. I basically have 2 of all the new dropped guides except WWE Smackdown V Raw 2006.

Hit up another Best Buy... this one had all their guides on a table next to the register, with a sign that said "CLEARANCE!!!". Table was full when I went there this morning, when I went back table was almost empty. At the Port Richey, FL Best Buy, I grabbed:

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One x 3 (All are up for trade)
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2006 x 2 (1 is up for trade, cover is a little ripped)
Madden 2006 x 3 (2 are up for trade)
Condemned x 1 (All are up for trade)
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness x 2 (The extra is already spoken for, sorry)
Pokemon Emerald x 1 (Old drop, lucky find, keeping it)
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks x 3 (All are up for trade)

So yea... pretty much everything is up for trade besides the Pokemon's.

If penny guides aren't supposed to be sold, apparently no one told the Best Buy's here, that had them all tagged and out. What's weird is that neither store had Call of Duty 2 =/ Luckily Botticus is trading me a copy.
 
If the Halo 2 guide ever drops to a penny, I hope to snag one. It may be necessary to pre-empt their manager by buying on at 9.99 the day before and have it price corrected the day it drops. Since all of the Halo 2 guides are sealed, they can't deny me returning one if they never drop.

With this most current batch, I had to resort to a co-worker's daughter hitting the BB nearest her home. She was able to get both CODs, Condemned and a beat up Shaolin Monks with no CD. My other source may have hit a store today. I hope he was able to get the Pokemon and a Monks with CD.
 
Price checked a Morrowind for fun... it's still $20.

I only hope the local Best Buy's will once again tag and sell the guides for 1 cent... hopefully next time will bring FF 4, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Mario and Luigi, and DQ 8. That is going to be one hell of a drop.

Surprised Kameo didn't penny out yet.
 
I got a Dragonquest 8 guide for a buck today. Some kid was returning DQ8 at gamestop and said he didn't like it. They wouldn't return let him return the guide and he was trying to tell them to just take it since he didn't want it. The guys kept saying its pointless since they'll just toss it. I offered the kid a buck and I got it. Only bad thing is he had ripped out the pullout poster.

Well.. It wasn't .01 but I finally got a God of War for $10 at 1/2 Price Books. It was brand new with the DVD. I think its worth it since noone seems to have it or want to trade it.
 
This has probabbly been asked before, but does Blockbuster/GR penny out guides? There's a SF:AC w/CD I want to get but I don't want to pay $20 for it.

We're not sure whether they do or not (they probably do). As an interesting side note, I'm trying to get a part-time job at Blockbuster's right now. I have an interview at one later this afternoon. So if I get the job, I will most definitely let you guys know of any penny drops (if they exist!).

AARRRGGGHHHHH!!! sometimes BB really pisses me off. i went there to snag penny guides, and i got some stupid young girl who was "in a mood." she was giving me a hard time about using 2 of the RZ $5 off coupons since i also wanted to get 2 games today. she would only let me use one, and went on and on about how "it's illegal to make copies of this coupon" and "only one per membership."

i tried mentioning about how they are right on THEIR OWN FRIGGIN WEBSITE!!! and i did not make copies, i just printed them.

when i put the other coupon away she wouldnt stop. "you wont be able to use that, usually the codes on these are the same and they wont let you use another."

i am getting fed up at this store anymore, but im reminded of times like last time i was in my BB, the nice lady cashier that time let me use 6 coupons at one time. she didnt care.

ive worked at blockbuster for 2 and half years now, before the manager would just pull the guides that were supposed to be "destroyed" and it was a free for all for the employees on who wanted what, now with our new manager he just rips the covers off and throws them (both covers and guide) in the trash, BBV destroy take A LONG TIME

blockbuster is a moronic company and it really depends on the manager you have, i would not recommend working for them unless you absolutely have to (you will find out when you to sell Rewards one week and Online Movie Passes the other week, and then back to Rewards the following week. free movies and prestreet rentals are the only thing worth it

hehe. You should check out the forums at www.ihateblockbuster.com. It's actually how I found out about CAG! Some funny ranting goes on over there. From reading those forums, I've got a pretty good idea bout what goes on. It's a 2nd job for me to bring in some extra money, so if I get fed up with it, no biggie, just walk out and knock over the magazine rack on the way out ;) .

Yup, all the NYC BBs are wiped out. Don't come here trying to steal our guides, ya hear? :) Seriously though, don't bother. NYC BB stores are always mobbed so you're never able to find any deals. There's too many hoarders as well.

Sadly, I have not been able to find a single S vs R 2006 guide yet, both my local BB stores were completely cleaned out from the recent drop.

I also can't believe I didn't grab the single copy of the Driv3r guide I saw at one of the BB's we passed yesterday. Oh well, not like I would get the game anyway, since I keep hearing its so craptacular.

I was tempted to pick up the GTA 2 pack(III and VC) since I finally saw it on the shelf @ the $19.99 price.

Anyway, one more week to go before Silent Hill the movie is out, I can't wait.[/quote]
