CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

I just picked up 6 guides, including black and doa4.

However, heres i hate gamestop post #435565.

The employees are horrible there at all 3 of our gamestops.

I was looking through the guides section with my list for a good 5 mins

I walked up to the register with a FEAR guide and ask for a price check.

The employee scans it...looks at the screen and calls over the manager

"It says a penny, what do i do"

And the manager looks at me and says 'Take it and get the hell out.' andslides the guide over too me.

I should call and report him, I don't know how on earth a MANAGER would speak to a customer like that. I hate gamestop.

They can't... if you didn't say anything to anyone about penny guides, there is no way possible they knew you were just trying to get free guides, you just happened to get lucky on a FEAR guide.

Call the number on Gamestop's website and get in contact with a DM ASAP.

I'm glad that my one local GS's manager is cool. He made me a deal, that if I find ANY pennied out guides on the shelf, I could have them. Since then, I've found 3-6 of them.

Mind you, I only need one copy of each for my personal collection, but if anyone wants a copy of the guide for Lineage II, he has a couple spares.

I also have a spare of the one for FEAR too, but I'm still leery about doing any trading. :whistle2:/ Guess I'll get over that SOMETIME!

And, wouldn't it figure, he's the manager of a couple GS stores and the one guide I truly wanted for a game I have, I get denied on.

Anyone with a Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30 guide, who wants to trade one for one, let me know. It has to be mint though, no rips, tears, other marks.

How old are you? A lot of times younger customers get treated like crap. One of the advantages of being older than most Gamestop managers is that they usually treat you with a little respect. This is true in most areas of life though.

If all else fails, get a concealed carry permit and use that as your id when you trade in games. Heh. They'll treat you nice after that.

I guess you need to be older than 25 to get treated with respect. I had a similar experience before - picked up three or four penny guides at a GameStop, older manager stopped talking to me after the first guide rang up a penny. It's always beautiful when they hate you for not doing their job.

If a certaint guide were not found in the GS/EB site, does that mean it's pennied?

I just did a search on Star Ocean and found no guides for SO3, does that mean it's pennied at GS/EB?

Thanks!

I am 19 :)
And female at that.

You should call their customer service # and file a complaint, without question IMO. I would file a complaint if _any_ merchant talked to me like that,
not just EB/GS. That's completely disrespectful, no matter what age you are.

Yah, over 30 and you're probably safe. Over 40 and they'll kiss your ass. Over 40 and female and they'll cringe in fear when you walk into the store because they know you won't take any shit. You've got children older than them.

Anyway, as was said before, file a complaint no matter what age you are. No one should get treated like that in a store.

That's devious. I like it.

Been out of town for a few days, thought I was doomed with the BB drops but was able to pick up Black (last copy), 2 of DOA4 and 3 of NFSMW (they had a big stack) at the Racine WI store. Trade copies available.

Now I need a $10 copy of NFSMW . . .

What am I missing, here? Why is it GS/EB employees act as though you're a criminal when you try and buy a pennied guide? Is it just because they didn't realize they forgot to pull it? So what? I just don't get it. :whistle2:#

Most likely because you know about it and they dont

I was actually chatting with a manager friend of mine over at Gamestop and he was chatting me up about them. They should be on the ball about them. He'd also said that there would be more penny guides near the fall.

am i supposed to find these $.01 cent guides at the the stores listed? sounds dumb but i have never seen some of the titles on the master list at $.01

Overall, your best chance to get a guide for a penny comes within days of it being reduced to a penny.

Many stores work hard to stop sales at a penny while others will just let guides sit for a long time.

The master list is more of historical record of known penny drops than a shopping list.

The best way to get any particular guide is start collecting new penny guides and then trade them (after shipping, $2 for a guide is still very cool).

I have gotten many guides by hitting BB, TRU, and EB. GS used to sell them used for $2 and I got several cool guides that way. But many of the ones I really wanted I've gotten by trade.

I went to BB and bought the DOA4 strategy guide. The cashier was puzzled when he saw the .01 prize. I told him that they were on clearance and he was like "ok".

Girl, you gotta use the female thing to your advantage, like I do. Act kinda flirtacious with an employee (its especially easier with a Gamestop/EB employee), and they'll bend over backwards for you. It works for me all the time ;)

Hey that's a pretty good strategy, I'll try it next time!

Love penny guide hunting :bouncy:

You can also give them a head's up.

When I picked up DOA4, Black, and NFSMW, I also checked Sims 2. I gave him Sims 2 first because I was doubtful (its NOT a penny) and said "I'm just doing a price check . . . looking for clearance guides."

If you can normalize the transaction before the shock you might reduce the reaction to get a manager or question the price/sale.

"Yeah, they penny the guides to clear them out"

My girlfriend and I know the guy from GameStop, so we're pretty much guaranteed the guides. I had lost hope before when I saw the latest drop had been pulled before I could get some, but when I was at the mall the other day, I noticed the limited edition Xenosaga 2 Guide and the GT4 Hardcover book and found a grand total of 7 seven penny guides:

M&L: PiT (*Keeping it)
Age of Empries 3 (Might Trade)
"Driving the Game" Harcover Book
Xenosaga 2 LE (Might keep or trade)
Shining Force Neo (Trade?)
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (Trade?)
Jade Empire w/DVD (Trade?)

I found a copy of Elder Srcolls III: The Morrowind Prophecies guide at a local BB last night. I thought for sure that it would be a penny, so I took it up to the cashier for a price check. It rang up "not in system" the first time he scanned it, but then price of $19.99 popped up immediately after. Needless to say, I walked away disappointed and empty-handed.

Did it have a white cover? The Morrowind guide was just rereleased with a new cover...the original cover was brown. My Best Buy just got the new version in last week.

No, it was the black and tan cover that's pictured on Amazon.com. It was weird, though, because all the pages are in b & w. If it were in color, it probably would be more like $40, because it's so freakin' thick.

Two sad stories that no one will care about:

My TRU has piles of FFIV, FF I&II, and MP:Hunters guides, with lots of older Nintendo Powers which are vaguely appealling (especially 200, if it were to be a penny). All of them ring up "not found" on the primary bar code, but a secondary bar code (which I assume is keyed to that particular store) rings up full price.

I went into my local GS and asked if they had the guide for FFIV. Not that I expect them to say "yes," though I do hope for intelligence. The employee looked at me funny and asked, "is that import only?"

Hmm...there must be 3 or 4 versions of this guide floating around...I had a copy for a while but it didn't look like the one on Amazon or the one I saw at Blockbuster. It was about the size of a phone book too.

I checked on BB's website, and it is still listed at $19.99. I'm hoping for a drop next month, or the following.

This one is the "Moby Dick" of guides . . . many of us have tried this beautiful monster at BB many times in the last year.

Some guides just hang in there.

Check this out, I went into a Kmart yesterday and discovered a whole mess of OLD, I mean REALLY OLD Gamepro, EGM, etc magazines. Some were dated as old as 1999!!! So I had an associate scan a couple and they still rang up regular price!! I was shocked, I thought for sure they would not be on file. I can't believe how many they had.

BTW, I've been in quite a few Gamestop's & EB's that have pulled most of their guides off the shelves and have them in their backroom. Has anyone else seen this in their stores?? I was at an EB yesterday in a mall and the guy was cool enough to prop his door to the stockroom open and let me look at all the guides on the wall back there from the doorway. Some were marked at .01 and others were not. Some were regular price and some were marked at .99 (Stubbs) He was very cool in helping me get some though and I came away with a Bard's Tale, Playboy Mansion, and other guides.

Which is why I ended up buying it for $14.99 after a GGC, since I figured it would never drop at BB. For it's size, I think it's worth it for all three of the games.

Then the first CAG to successfully bag this guide at a penny shall be aptly named "Captain Ahab"!

"Thar she blows!"

The funny thing is that I had a copy of it (but not the game) that I bought for $1.98 at GS . . . back when they sold used guides . . . sucks that they stopped.

But I traded it away . . . I think it was for the Steel Battalion guide which was impossible to find at the time.

Then I sold off Steel Battalion (for about $200) and . . .

it just gets confusing

lmao! I would....ah this will be an intresting post lol, but I'm a lesbian and I came in with my girlfriend. I guess that....could be used to my advantage too! ;)

Yep, you speak the truth... if anyone is ever wondering how I get all my YMMV price matches and sales, it's because I just send in my girlfriend, and 6669 is right, it is ALOT easier with a EB / GS employee.

They'll bend over backwards for her... guides, preorder bonuses, taking back returns past the due date, they'll do anything they can.

It's kind of sad, but it works in my favor, so I can't complain.

There was a girl behind me and my friend in line yesterday, and they waited on her first because we "had stepped out of the line."

We were standing still the entire time. -_-

i went to the BB at my place. DOA4 and NFS:MW guides marked 9.99 on the shelves. so i guess its a no go. if i bring it up to the register will it ring up 9.99 or 0.01? they might mark it 9.99 so ppl wont hoard them.

The $9.99 is an old shelf tag.

I've seen a bunch of EB/GS stores that have done this recently and usually the guide section re-appears after about a week or two absence.

It happened in both Stroudsburg and Dickson Citys stores as far as I know locally.

I've been coming up pretty dry on guides lately, as usually they take that disappeared time to yank all the pennied out ones out of the piles and field destroy them.

True, Ive done well by wooing the rare female employee for guides, just pop off the wedding ring and Im good to go ;) JK on that last part

I bought Oblivion for $2. Will that at least qualify me as a seaman?

after doing some searching, i think youre talking about elder scrolls 4: oblivion... morrowind is a pretty old game and i dont think they released a new expansion pack for it since oblivion came out.... the brown cover is the game of the year edition...
Best Buy on Concord Pike pulled all the penny guides :whistle2:\
They missed Black though, however I already had it from a previous stop so I didn't bother
Thank you for leaving it :D

I saw it there earlier in the week and didn't realize it was pennied until today. Hopefully it'll still be there.
