CAGiversary!
Feedback
9 (100%)
07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2
Maybe we can add this to the FAQ in the OP so people don't have to ask every 2 pages?
You're assuming people actually read the FAQ.:)

Not a penny, but I found a Super Mario Sunshine Versus guide at CompUSA, tagged 1.49, prolly was out of system. Couldn't tell. It was lumped with the clearanced/markdown games though. Condition's not the greatest ever, but I've never found a penny guide, so I just got it.

Man, I usually don't buy anything else when I get penny guides. I do browse through the PS1 games looking for some oddball titles but if they don't have anything I want then I just start piling guides up and then walk up to the counter with them. I usually wait until there are no other customers around though. Most of the time they are more than happy to get them off their shelf. 1 guy even said, thank you you've cleared up a whole shelf for me! lol

I've actually developed a few strategies with Gamestops/EB Games that has benefitted me over the years.

First, I'm always friendly with them, no matter what. Sometimes I just start talking with them about video games or whatever, and I'll be able to tell right away if they're cool or not.

If I develop a repore with them, over time, they'll have no problem helping out when they can.

Second, I have no issue with having them price check a stack of guides. I've done it before, and will do it again. They're there to work, and this still qualifies.

Third, if I get the guides to scan a penny or whatever, I immediately say something like, "Nice..." That acknowledgement of the deal prevents them from changing it.

Finally, if I get the whole, "I can't sell them - blah, blah, blah..." I say, "Actually, you have to sell them to me, for the price that it rings up in the system."

See, they can't change a price to go up, only to go down. Also, ringing up for a penny is different from "Not in system." This is what happens at Gamecrazy - they simply remove them from the system.

If they come up as "Not in system", then they don't have to give you squat.

They certainly could, but there's no obligation. If they ring up as $.01, then that obligation is there.

Everything always goes back to #1 above. If I'm cool with them, and they get used to seeing me around, chances are that I'll be able to score some freebies over time.

With Gamecrazy, however, you might want to try this:

Bring up a bunch of the guides that you know to be "not in system".

Have them scan them to confirm.

When they say, "I can't sell these to you", say, "Well, I would like to sign up for your MVP card (the Gamecrazy game discount card). Perhaps for signing up (it's $20), you would let me have these."

If you don't already have a MVP card, you will probably get the guides. Those memberships are important to them, and they probably won't turn you down just for some guides that have no value.

Worked for me - scored over 20 guides that way recently.

Anyway - good luck!

Got myself a Indigo Prophecy guide today. Well, indirectly. Sent my girlfriend in because i figured she had a better shot, since ive been shot down lately. Teehee.

Nice haul today from Gamestop and Gamecrazy. Putting all up for trade. See my trade list in my sig for additional guides as well. Got all the following for a 0.01. I prefer to trade for other guides.

Gamestop:
Indigo Prophecy (Trading)
King Kong (Trading)
Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects (Trading)

Gamecrazy:
Jak II (Trading)
Jak 3 - Sealed (Trading)
Project Snowblind (Trading)
Ratchet: Deadlocked - sealed (Trading)
Dragonball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 - DS (Trading)

PM if interested.

Hehe, This is how I got my deal with guides there. They said if I signed up for the MVP then they would actually hold guides for me EVERY time they dropped to a penny! Gamecrazy rocks!:applause::cool::bouncy:
You're assuming people actually read the FAQ.:)
I don't care if they read it or not...if it's there I can ridicule them when they ask these questions and say, "Read the FAQ, bitch!" These things make me happy.

I wasn't certain where else I could post this, and have people who were interested in strategy guides actually read it.

I'm looking for advice.

I have an opportunity to buy 196 strategy guides for somewhere between $550 and $600 (final price includes shipping.)

Of this, there are only about 21 that I'm keeping, and 4 of those are for trade purposes.

That basically leaves 175 to sell, to recoup the cost of the deal.

The rough math is that I would need to clear approximately $3 per the remaining guides to break even or get close enough for it not to matter.

The problem here, and the reason I need advice, is that the overwhelming majority of the guides are old enough that they aren't on eBay for me to determine what they could sell for.

They're all brand new - a game store is trying to liquidate their old guide stock, but they're all new and in excellent condition (I've seen the pics.)

So, what I'm looking for, is some input from fellow CAGs, to see if this is a worthwhile deal or not.

The list is below, and the items I'd be keeping are in yellow.

Thanks for any input, and I apologize for putting this in the penny thread, but as I said - I wanted "guide" folks to read it and offer advice.

Steve

$3 per guide seems like a pretty fair price.. it's one that I'd be comfortable paying. Heck, I can count at least five guides on there that I'd buy off ya if you went for that deal.

Do you need the money? I think most of those guides would sell, but only eventually. It would take some time for you to go through them al.

I'd buy at least 5 from you too, but $600 is a lot to drop on guides. I bought 100 for $120 from someone on CAG, and I was still debating it.

The negotiations aren't completed yet, and I'm still thinking that $500 might be the tops I'd go.

I agree that it would take a while to go through them though.

There are definitely some on the list that would take a WHILE to resell.

Again, I'm not sure.

What I may end up doing is buying the ones that I want, plus the other Dark Cloud 2 guides, and perhaps a couple more.

If I knew that there were some people would trade for, I would consider picking those up also.

while some guides like FFX2 will sell easily, other stuff like Syphon filter: The Omega Strain will have a hard time selling. You can buy the most of the guides on your want list for about $100 shipped and dont have to worry about reselling. Assuming you can get $7 profit for the popular guides you wont be making $400.

Pretty much why I'm thinking it's a "no-go."

Thanks!

I went to a Gamecrazy in Seattle yesterday. I found 2 FSW: 10 Hammers guides. My friend was buying 6 used games, 1 guide and renewing his MVP membership. The kid scans the FSW guides and says that he "was supposed to pull them and field destroy them". I'm thinking, OK, he'll give us the guides since they were on the shelf. This kid then proceeds to say that he can't get let us have them and puts them behind the counter. A $96 sale and he won't let a pair of guides go.:bomb: Apparently this kid has no clue of the concept of good customer service. Even worse he openly admitted he hadn't been doing his job since he hadn't pulled the guides.

Anyway, if someone can find me a FSW: 10 Hammers guide I'd like to trade for it. Thanks.

Not that it would have helped you any in Seattle (unless you've moved there?) but usually the appropriate course of action would be to put the games and guide back on the shelf and say no thank you to the MVP renewal.

Same thing just happened to me at a GameStop. I finally found 2 Indigo Prophecy and 2 Marvel Nemesis guides. I was going to buy the games for them and get the guides for a penny. The manager said he couldn't sell them to me and put them behind the counter but asked if still wanted the games. I said "thanks but no, I'll find a GS or EB that will do it" and left.

Yeah... I'm sure most of us has had such unlucky experiences... sometimes you just have to know those people that wont let it slide and wait until they're on break! I've done that before... a bit extreme but if that's what it takes... :D

Yeah, I'll try and try again. Does anyone know what the laws are in Ohio? I mean if I find it on a rack, I should get it for .01. If I go in and ask for a guide, then yes it's up to them if they want to sell it. I should be paid if they want me to do their job.

http:/Orrimarrko, that's a lot of guides to go through and try to break even. There are few guides that I'm interested in though, including Dark Cloud 2 and FF X-2 :)

That kid is an ass. I realize the store policy states they have to destroy them, but not only did you purchase merchandise you also helped the fuck stick by renewing the MVP.

A few months I hit up my gamecrazy because I found out about a recent $.01 drop. I took Demon Stone to the counter and the guy behind the counter said the same thing, but he also said if I purchased something he could give the guide to me. I passed and spent the next few hours discussing videogames up until he had to kick me out. When I was about to head out he handed me the guide, I said thanks, and he thanked me for the company.

I'm pretty sure stores can always refuse service, meaning they don't have to sell you anything. It doesn't matter if you "found" it or if they got it for you, it's still their inventory and they aren't legally bound to sell you anything. If there is an advertised price and you go in and find it to be more expensive, then you can complain. But if the guide is unadvertised as being $0.01, it rings up as $0.01, but then they price adjust it to the full marked price on the guide, I still don't think you have any legal basis to complain. They can always claim pricing mistake, similar to how many pricing mistakes occur online and no online merchant is bound to honor them.

You are correct. Unless there is a $0.01 sticker on the item (and I've seen it happen several times at Best Buy and Gamestop), you really can't do anything if they refuse to sell it to you for a penny. Well, you can always take your business elsewhere and not place the preorder you had told the cashier you wanted to do before he scanned the guides ;)

In the state of California, if there is a discrepancy between the stickered price and the price it rings up for in the computer system, they are required by law to sell at the lower of the two prices. However, this does not preclude them from refusing you service. However, the easiest way to get around this is to somply bring up a second item. At this point they either have to refuse you service for everything or nothing at all (ie- I just went to EB and got like 5 penny guides and a MvC2 for PS2 for $60). When I brought my stuff up to the counter, I gave her MvC2 first to ring up at regular price and then the guides. First one she said I could have for free. Then when the others started ringing up for a penny, she started trying to back peddle and all I told her was that if they're a penny in the system, I want them for that price. She looked over at the manager (standing 2 feet away) and he just nodded. However, had he not I would've simply quoted the above law/ordinace/article/whatever and told him that if he didn't comply I would make sure the Chamber of Commerce and whatever the other Chambers/Boards/Committees are that handle sales crap would hear about, leaving them with fines for every instance (in this case 5). All in all, I've only ever had to go through this rant once and yes, it did work (TRU).

Long and short of it... if you live in CA, don't let them walk away with your penny guides!

This is why I wanted to know the law in Ohio. I called customer service and they said if it rang up .01 that is what they had to sell it for, they could not raise the price. But it was up to the manager if he wanted to sell it to you or not. I have no problem buying something else to go with the .01 guides. Actually I feel a little obligated to. I figure if I get a $19.99 game and a couple guides for $20 we both make out. I just want to know the rules to play by.

He is not an @$$, he was just doing his job. Especially if the manager had told him he would be fired if he sold penny guides. What do you think would be more important to him; making a sale or keeping his job?

Do you actually know the legal code this is filed under? It's easy to say something like that but a lot of managers won't take you seriously unless you can go "Subsection blah blah of the consumer blah blah."

Still, most places just out and out refuse to sell the guides at all, which I am pretty sure is the same in every state.

He is not an @$$, he was just doing his job. Especially if the manager had told him he would be fired if he sold penny guides. What do you think would be more important to him; making a sale or keeping his job?

I wholly agree with this. They don't work on commission either.

This looks like a bad deal to me . . . you certainly would not turn a profit on it.

Are you going to do it?

I agree. Most of those are not worth much, especially when you take out the ones you're keeping, and selling that many guides will take a lot of time and effort. Why not try to get them to sell you the ones you're interested in for like $50 or something?

Don't bother getting guides in Binghamton, NY. They'll rip the covers off or cut out the barcodes before they give them to you. If anyone is interested in these:
Pacman World 3 x3 (Back cover ripped off)
Nightmare Before Christmas (Back cover ripped off)
Auto Assault (Barcode cut out)
Indigo Prophecy (Barcode cut out)
King Kong x2 (Barcode cut out)

PM me and I'll give them to you for the cost of shipping.

I know he is doing his job hence me mentioning the store policy portion in my previous post. With this being said he still is an ass. Most stores give these to customers with the purchase of other items. Also most the GC employees I've talked with over the years hate their jobs anyway. I'm pretty sure if the kid was fired no manager in their right mind would annotate the reason of termination was due to selling a Strat guide for a penny, when it is known throughout the retail community that guides get pennied out.

But how is it that people complain and say, "If the guide is on the shelf they should have to sell it to me, it's not my fault they didn't do their job.", and yet when they do actually do their job of not selling them, they are also criticized.

Perplexing indeed...

I havent seen anything EVER for .01 and I check alot of stores all the time. What stores seems to have the most .01 stuff

If you checked stores all the time than you must be checking this thread all the time, so you'd know this.

But how is it that people complain and say, "If the guide is on the shelf they should have to sell it to me, it's not my fault they didn't do their job.", and yet when they do actually do their job of not selling them, they are also criticized.

Cheapness+sense of entitlement+internet anonymity=rage!!! The fact is anyone should feel lucky to get penny guides at all.

Most stores give these to customers with the purchase of other items. Also most the GC employees I've talked with over the years hate their jobs anyway.

Actually, from what I understand, most stores destroy the guides or return them to the manufacturer. Regardless, there is no standard policy they are supposed to follow which is what you're making it sound like. I highly doubt corporate policy is "Well...give them the guide if they buy something with it." Additionally, no matter how much they hate their job, they like it enough to not quit.

That's basically what I did.

I determined that the math simply wasn't there, and that I would easily be able to get about 1/3 back quickly, and possibly another 1/3 over time.

The remaining 1/3 would most likely be lost.

Anyway, so I got the 21 guides I picked for $70 shipped.

6 Dark Cloud 2 guides will be up for trade and sale (3 will go on eBay to help pay for the guides I want to keep, 3 will be trade fodder..)

Thanks again for all the advice folks!

Yeah, but they can do their job and still be an ass while doing it.

I can't begin to tell you just how many assclowns there are working at game stores. For some reason, when they pin on that plastic name tag, and put on that promo Halo 2 t-shirt, they feel more enlightened than the customer.

Obviously there are exceptions, but there isn't a CAG here that hasn't been treated like crap from someone at these stores.

Recently I have improved my penny guide techniques, the easiest store for me is BB, I always get all the guides I grab in one go, no problems. Pity is all the BB I can reach only have the same few guides.. haven't found anything I really wanted yet...

The second is GS/EB, while some GS still give me crap, and some EB have nothing, in general if I buy some games, I can get penny guides.. though only 1-2 per transaction.. still they are my fav as they have some awesome stuff sometimes..

Hell, I've even managed to grab something from TRU recentely... that's pretty freaken rare to me...

My most hated store at the moment is GC... they have been nothing but absolute ass to me... once I was buying quite a few games and they wont even let one penny guide slide... I told them to fuck off and left the store... So far, I've been to about 3 GC of which I have told every single one to go fuck themselves by the time I leave the store.. The thing that really piss me off is that all the GC I've been to have TONES of awesome penny guides... it's kinda like seeing page one of this topic in RL... I had even PAID FULL RETAIL for some of the PSX guides they had... bastards... fucken **ther fucken bastards... I know it's not their fault, I just have very very short temper... sorry...
On a related note, the Player Choice games like Paper Mario and 4 Swords got a PC cover guide for $9.99 now.
I saw those and almost laughed out loud at how ugly they are.. and then proceeded to contemplate the potential for increased value for those of us with original guides.

Tried to get auto assault guide today and the manager told me there is a new store policy starting. anything pennied out goes in a drawer and whenever someone preorders a game they get a 'free gift' from the drawer. he told me if i preordered two games for ten dollars i could have the guides >.<

No thanks.

I never mentioned the employee had to sell anything. I just stated that if the customer is giving you the business a clearenced $.01 should not be a big deal. Stores across the country either sell/give them away with a decent purchase, or sell them for the pennied price. I don't know what fucked up deal GC has with guide companies and any other retailer for that matter, but for an item of little importance to have such effect on employment status is asinine.

Whatever the policy you shouldn't have to worry about losing your job over a $.01 guide. I have a buddy who works at GS and snags $.01 guides for me when he can and nothing is said. I know that GS and GC have different policies, but give me a break. The kid made a sale and on top of that helped his "MVP Quota" for the month. He should have gave up a guide and for not doing so he is an A$$

Another example of the A$$ complex. The guy tells you the policy and then expects to to make 2 pre-orders to get your "free gift".

See WolfPac_Ite the policy is clearly stated to the customer and the guy still can't follow it. So what is the point in having it in the first place. I'm guessing it is there for a reason at a corporate level, but down at the retail level it is to hold over some kids head who is just trying to make a buck. Hence your defense for the kid in the first place. I have an understanding how the big wheel turns, but sometimes you got to step off and do your own thing. Everyone knows that little schwag/$.01 items draws customers in and one should be willing to part with said items at the right time. Me personally if I knew giving out Scwag/$.01 items boosted sales I would have done it even before a said policy was put out.

Wait....you can actually buy guides for a penny? I never noticed at any stores. Why do they do this? To get rid of it? even then, wouldn't a penny be a little low?
