Wow. We had a post with an almost Shakespeare quality, and it disappeared. Alas, 3325BriggsChaneyRd, to answer your questions perhaps it's not the eShop games that suck, but your lack of effort in finding something to your liking. It's easy to write off the eShop as a dumping ground of old games and shovelware, but it's far better than the DSIShop ever was.

There are a lot of good retail games on the eShop, and there are quite a few good non-retail as well!  :)  As someone alluded to above, though, there is going to be a lot of junky stuff also anywhere there is "stuff" at all.  The more popular something is, the more junk along with good stuff.

I can't decide if I want either SMT game. I did grab Code of Princess, and I'm not sure if I like it. I only played for about an hour, though.

I might just wait for the next sale on the SMT games.

So... Soul Hackers or Devil Survivor Overclocked?

I actually have both in cart-form but still sealed. I figured I might as well get the one I will most likely play digitally. I played SMT IV pretty extensively and liked that. I played Strange Journey and didn't finish it. I think I started playing Devil Survivor on the DS but never got past the first area. It is more of a strategy game, right? Is Soul Hackers more like SMT IV and Strange Journey?

Maybe you should just get both. I think Devil Survivor is a better game (actually quite an awesome game), but Soul Hackers is good too (just dated) and resembles SMT IV and Strange Journey.

If you have a PS3, also be on the lookout for SMT III, now on the PSN. I wish they'd do a 3DS or Vita port of that.

Well, yes, ideally I would get both. But realistically, I only have time to play one of them so that's why I'm asking. Actually, I could see never getting around to playing even the first one, but at least there's a better chance of that than both ;). I looks like Devil Survivor might be the better option since that is at least different than SMT IV. Even though I loved that game, I just want something a little different.

I mean, I really should just go play Persona 4 Golden on my Vita. But I do have some credit sitting in my Nintendo account plus a few extra $20 cards laying around. So it isn't much effort to stockpile one of these games for later.

OK, OK, I'll play it!

Have they been on sale this cheap before? I thought they were $20 or something. Well, I suppose I can wait and maybe they'll hit $10.

Soul Hackers is more similar to SMTSJ and SMTIV than Devil Survivor is. If you had a hard time with DS before because of the style of gameplay or the story, you should probably grab SH. But if the reason you had a hard time with it was the difficulty, DSOC includes an easy mode, and is probably the better game.

I mean, P4 is either the best or the second best game in the MegaTen franchise so yes, you should play it, but DS and SH are both solid. Up to you whether you really need either of them digitally as well as physically though.

^ First things first, I am going to put P4G at the top of my RPG backlog. I just need to finish FF X HD... Skyrim, once again, will have to get bumped (as it has for about 5 or 6 other things recently) ;).

It's not so much that it was too difficult. I just started playing and had a little trouble with one section and just moved on to something else. I'm sure I could get back into it and figure it out. But yeah, I think I'll go for Devil Survivor since it is a little different from the others and I spent a long time playing SMT IV.

I would love to play Persona games.

...

Unfortunately, all I have is 3DS, PC, and 360. Definitely leaning towards a PS4 this gen. Just wish they were backwards compatible.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. It's really funny. I have SMT IV as well as several other RPGs in the 3DS backlog.

Instead on buying one of these games, earlier this week I decided to start up Persona 4 on the Vita and it really hooked me. Loving the story, music (awesome), gameplay and the overall game in general. The game is deliberately slow in the beginning, but it sets up the story and setting really well though. You can turn on the auto-advance text in the options so you can watch the dialogues without continually pressing X. Finally digging into the battles and it is fun.

If I ever finish the game I'll probably move over to Persona 3 Portable which I picked up for $5 from the PSN sale. I also have a ton of eshop credit, but because of my backlog I can afford to wait on an even better sale.

I'm sure the games are more than worth the price for those with the time to play them, but for once my backlog actually helped suppress the need to add to my digital library.

P4G is just great. I'd never touched a Persona game before and wound up pre-ordering the solid gold edition on a whim due to all the hype. I started it up a week after getting it and it was all I played for a week or two... 64 hours later and it's in my top 5 all time favorite games list(along with MGS3, Mega Man Legends 2, FFVI and Super Mario RPG for those of you keeping score at home). I'm even thinking about starting it up again soon - which is something I hardly ever do.

I bought P4 Arena out of my love for P4G and am eagerly awaiting Persona Q and even P4 Dancing All Night.

What's the other in the running for best?

I think I'll wait to pick up either of the SMT games, like Frisky says they go on sale regularly and I might as well wait till the next Club Nintendo year starts so the coins will count toward platinum.

Maybe you should get a PS3? Lots of great deals, Persona 3, SMT III, and whatever else you've missed out on (I'd like to say "a ton of great RPGs!!!" but...) And Persona 5 is going to be a PS3 game. I'm not interested in a PS4 yet myself. If they played all my PSN stuff (PS3, PS2) I'd be interested, but I didn't amass a giant PSN backlog just to buy a PS4 and never play it.

You could always pick up the disc versions of P3 and P4 for PS2 and rip them to PC. They look absolutely gorgeous with upscaling.

That's not what the eShop says:

would of got it for 4.99 in a second. i think 9.99 is still overpriced

Man. I wish I could find a physical copy of Code of Princess for anywhere near that price...
Agreed even though I have a larger memory card now in my 3DS, I want a physical copy if ones available. I hate double dipping and try to avoid it when I can! I made the mistake with P4G (bought it for around 20 and about 2 months later the physical copy was and still is around 20) and wont make the same mistake with Code of Princess.

P3. I actually haven't beaten P4 yet, but I hear from somewhat reliable sources that it winds up being better than P3. I'll see one of these days.
P3, yeah that's probably right. Personally I had problems with some of the mechanics of P3 that P4 fixed.

Yeah...was going to pull the trigger, then I realized that it probably will be under $8 by X-Mas.
just DL'd it, of course it will get cheaper but it seems worth it after stage 1, has potential, but is extremely basic so far, still, no buyers remorse.

now if only dual destinies would get a sale/drop but i don't think it will until layton X pheonix gets released, maybe the week of e3 if it gets an official release date. I think its safe to say June is no longer considered "early" 2014 though...

Right? I'm searching high and low until June 2nd, and if I can't find a copy for around $20 I might have to settle for digital.
haha almost bit on this, its been up for a while now but still wating for a cheaper physical, 26.65 is the cheapest i have seen in a long time though and it helps to not be picky about used games

just saw this on this one on half.com 20.99 shipped

I'm not opposed to buying games used. But in this case a used copy probably wouldn't have the bonus CD and whatever else comes with a new copy, which is most of the reason I want physical.

What do you guys think of Project X Zone? I've been thinking about it for a while and it's twenty bucks which is the new retail price I guess...

Looking for a new RPG at the moment.

heard the game is only like 5 hours long. too short for me for 10 bucks

We live in a generation now where RPGs no longer try to push gameplay but rather just try to be fun. That's okay, I guess, but can't we have both? Project X Zone is a good example of an RPG that doesn't push any boundaries, but it is a lot of fun, unless you're not familiar with any of the characters (which might actually be impossible--I blame the baby boomers)

I played it for a little and got rid of it. The various characters were cool but I didn't care for the game play and got bored pretty quickly.

Project X Zone is really fun and has a ton of lampshade hanging. And fanservice. Lots of fanservice.

However, the game play is literally nothing but battles. You get items from enemies and there's little exploration. But the battle system is the only time I have actually enjoyed a Strategy RPG.

I'm on the other side, I thought it would be a good turn-based strategy but so far have been disappointed. There isn't much for RPG fans there. Overall, I was just disappointed with Project X Zone's humor. If you enjoy lots of fanservice then you might like it. I haven't.

on chapter 28 now, i thought it picked up after you finally get a complete party, but there is very little customization and equipment usage is near pointless. other than pairing solo chars with main paired characters there really isn't much customization that i noticed, once you get into combining skillsets without overlapping them it does become strangely addictive, i also got bored around chapter 7-9 but decided to give it another shot havent been able to put it down.

no idea how long aeternoblade is, but it seems like a very toned down/introductory castlevania or metroid game, the time powers seem to actually be done well, doesnt help that you can blast through levels without using them properly though, but if there were actual consequences to not using the time powers correctly it would seem harder than it really was. also helps that nnk and gow3 helped pay for it :whistle2:$

There's a Project X Zone demo for folks on the fence, too, although I think the game itself is more enjoyable than the demo, which is a bit out of context and frankly confusing.

Oooh. Good deal, I'm going to download that now. I had the chance to pick it up for $15 a few times but the reviews aren't very forgiving. The premise sounds amazing, though...but enough to carry an entire game? Trying to cut back on buying shit just because I can. But I will at least give the demo a go, thanks.

Well, I don't recall there being a ton of reviews. I think it was one in particular - GameTrailers I want to say - that put me off. Maybe CGR Undertow? Chief complaint being the one-note battles. To be clear I didn't get the impression it was bad, just that it wasn't something I would play. Now I can see for myself.

Hahaha I knew there would be a system update the moment I went to download something from the store. Happens every time. And for what?! :wall:

Two demos available, btw. One called 'Ghost' and the other 'Imperial'.

The demos are there to let you try out the battle system, which I enjoyed a lot in its original form as Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier.
THIS!

the combo system with attack cancelling and timing was sooooo much better, i was looking forward to this because of that game, but PxZ is like an autopilot/easy mode of that battle system, feel like sometimes i dont even have to look down to continue a battle
