One does not simply walk into Amazon.

...I don't think?

When the Etrians go on sale again, remember this: EOU is good. EO4 is better. EOU is perfectly worth getting AFTER EO4.
How is the story in EO4 compared to EOU? I have both 3DS games but haven't played either of them (or any others in the series). I've read that EO4 is a better overall game compared to EOU, but if the story in EOU is stronger, I'd be able to look past the differences/faults before playing EO4. I would rather go forward in overall quality rather than backward, if that makes sense.

Are you talking story as in the story that is being told or the story mode?

EOU's story was pretty grating, so grating that I quit halfway through the first dungeon and switched to classic mode. You get five characters who comment about EVERYTHING only it's not endearing like they would be in Persona and they just grate so hard. Everyone throws "anime stereotypes" around like it's nothing but these are four of the most anime-ish anime stereotypes I've seen in a while.

EOU is a remake of the first, least-refined EO game and it feels like it. The characters and the writing, even of the barebones plot of EOU's classic mode just feels less interesting than EO4.

EO4 has no "story mode" equivalent but it certainly has a story. It's mostly just interacting with characters in town but the writing just makes them feel even more alive. The plot itself does not go anywhere unpredictable but you have a mystery, new friends, new enemies, twists, someone to save, a monster to slay, and a few scary truths. It's hits every note competently without wasting your time or betraying your expectations.

Now I haven't gotten far enough in EOU to tell if the story it reveals as you play is worth anything.

That said, EO thrives on its gameplay. If you had asked me a month ago, I would have considered the whole JRPG genre trash. Gameplay-wise, with all the little systems that your characters bring to the table, EO4 was so good it sold me on the JRPG genre again. It's an engaging game, certainly. EOU is not bad, and since it came after EO4 it does do some things different technically. It's less forgiving, less interesting in some places but certainly offers another helping of competent dungeon crawling after EO4, but I do not think it would have hooked in me half as deep as EO4 did had I played it first.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight into both of these games. Regarding EOU, I was talking about the story throughout the game, though I forgot that there are different modes.

I have a hard time with the anime stereotype characters as well. A few months ago, I tried playing through Lufia: Curse of the Sinstrals on the DS and the characters annoyed me to the point that I gave it up. I wanted to like the game, some of the game play elements were enjoyable, but it's hard to justify playing through a long game when 3/4 of the dialog is predictable, and worse, irritating.

So I'll give EO4 a shot in the near future, thanks! I need to finish Dragon Quest V first though ;)

waxHead, play EO4 with really good headphones or earphones.  The music is just amazing.  It made me nostalgic for older anime music yet was also incredibly fresh and vibrant.  One of my favorite soundtracks for anything.

I got about 65 hours into EO4 before putting it away.  It was excellent fun and I recall the skills system being intricate but offering complimentary skills among each of the jobs.  I probably would have gone further (I was last at the 4th strata), but work and other games came up.  I greatly regret not finishing it because at this point I have forgotten the kind of character builds I was working toward, hah.

Just know that you will feel super clever about utilizing seemingly one-off skills to devastating effect with other characters' skills and will love it.

Did I mention the music? ;)

Have fun!

I love the music too, been wanting a DL of the soundtrack for a while now.

So apparently Adventure Bar Story had a stealth demo released in the last few weeks that I stumbled on.  Turns out I liked it so much that I couldn't even wait for the game to go on sale and bought the full version at $5.99.  I'm not even sure why I like it so much, it's just oddly addicting.

I played 1.5 more worlds of EOU.

EOU has some interface improvements. Battle and dungeon walking can be both sped up far more than you could in EO4. It runs at nearly double the speed EO4 could.

EOU is legitimately harder than EO4. Yes, the skill trees are less cool than EO4 but the difficulty spike is legitimate, not full of cheesy grindwalls or crap like that. Both are within the acceptable range of difficulty though. (EOU has two weaker difficulty options if you are bad at gaming.)

I remain of the opinion that EOU is a very good buy decision if you beat EO4 and want more but a bad choice for a first largely because it's just less cool than EO4. Worse setting, worse story, worse music, dungeons are a bit drawn out and a slog, with more pointless walking and dead ends to fill out the map rather than the tight puzzles of EO4.

This thread is getting slow, so I'll get up to speed on the new 3DS eShop sales. Capcom is having a sale on a few of their 3DS games (I wish Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was one of them) from their respective $19.99 prices.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D 60% off: $19.99 - $7.99
Resident Evil Revelations 55% off: $19.99 - $8.99
Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition 60% off: $19.99 - $7.99

Well, i might bite on SF4 since having it on mobile seems pretty good. Is there still an online community at this point, or it's non-existent already. Depending on that is if i bite or get RE: Mercenaries.

Stretchmo - Free

Looks like the sequel to Pushmo and Crashmo is a free-to-play game where you get seven levels to start and can purchase up to four level packs to play the rest of the content. If you buy any of the level packs and you get the puzzle creator to make puzzles that you can share with others via QR codes. I'm curious to see how much they're charging for the level packs.

Also, Stretchmo was just released, a continuation of the Pushmo series.

Edit: Lol, posted a minute after FriskyTanuki.

Man I really want Persona Q and Xenoblade Chronicles (not on sale I know), but the prices on them are pretty steep still. I know overall they are a good price for the content, so I have no real issue spending $32/40 on them at Best Buy, but I have so many other games to play that I feel I would be better waiting for a sale.

My concern is that these games may become harder to find, any thoughts? I don't really care about the bonus cards from Persona Q, but I do want it complete in terms of the case/box art/manual.

Have any Atlus games become rare? They seem to do plenty of reprints on their games. Xenoblade Chronicles just came out, and as far as I know hasn't even seen a sale yet, so I wouldn't worry about that one for a while.

The hook to Stretchmo is that you can "stretch" them from the sides now instead of just the front, so it's more of a sequel to Pushmo than Crashmo from what the free levels suggest. One of the early levels essentially shows that you can turn a backwards C into stairs by pulling on the bottom blocks and then the middle block, which is a pretty cool twist on that formula.

Prices of the level packs:

Mallo's Playtime Plaza - 100 Levels - $4.99 - 2 Star Difficulty

Poppy's Sculpture Square - 50 Levels - $2.99 - 3 Star Difficulty - Puzzles shaped like real world items

Corin's Fortress of Fun - 50 Levels - $2.99 - 4 Star Difficulty - Action-packed levels where creatures attack you while you're trying to solve puzzles?

Papa Blok's NES Expo - 50 Levels - $2.99 - 5 Star Difficulty - Features NES Sprite-shaped puzzles

All-Encompassing Bundle - $9.99 - 28% Off

Like some of their other free-to-play stuff, a salesperson tries to sell you on getting these packs, which is becoming more of a trend in their games.

There's no manual with Persona Q, even with the CE. Only thing in the case is the epilepsy warning. It's still $50 MSRP, this digital sale is the first one of any sort that I know of. Only way to get the version with cards is likely either Target or Best Buy, as most GS have gone through their copies with the cards and now have box only copies.

Go by how hard the other Atlus games are to find physical copies of in your area and you'll know how hard it will be to get physical later on (ie you'll have to buy on Amazon, EBay, or a likely cart-only used copy at GS.)

If you refuse to shop at GS, the only place you can find a physical copy of an Atlus came a year or so after launch is online.

If you have GCU at Best Buy, it might be better to get the Wild Cards Premium Edition for only $15 more. I've been contemplating it, since I need a case for my New 3DS XL. Surprised it lasted this long, though, compared to the Persona 4 Golden: Solid Gold Premium Edition.

If it's the same case I got with my premium edition of Persona Q, it's a really good 3DS case that is nice and sturdy along with having some cool art on the covers.

Yeah for $18 more get the physical CE: case is awesome & you also get the tarot cards, art book, & (good but pitiful) 4-song mini soundtrack.

Giant Bomb's Quick Look of the Puzzle & Dragons & Mario game that seems to do a decent job of explaining how it works and all that:

Figures. I paid $20 for Mercenaries about a month ago. Mercenaries is pretty good but you have to love RE5 Mercs to enjoy it.

Personally I thought RE:Revelations was the definition of mediocrity. The HD versions on every other system are supposedly better but I can't say for certain.

Another Pushmo game? They make these faster than I can play them.

My love of EO4 is gonna make me buy PQ but I still have to play Persona 4. If I can survive this sale and knuckle down and play P4 it will probably be down to $15 by the time I'm done.

Interesting.  I really liked RE: Revelations on the 3DS.  It looks fantastic and it's my favorite Resident Evil I've played since 4.  Raid mode was a blast too, though I wish they had just made the campaign co-op to begin with.

To me, the enemies, shooting, and levels mostly sucked apart from about two rooms on the ship. That wonky pseudo-QTE dodge was egregious especially since it was your chief mandatory defensive option.

Raid mode is a grind where the game is more on building stupidly broken weapons and letting them do all the work. I played it in RER2 because there the gunplay and monsters were actually pretty good but it's still, in my opinion, inferior mechanically to Mercenaries. Though if you prefer a grinding progression constant more crap system to an arcadey repeat over and over to get better system then Raid is definitely for you.

I still get hits for it when I use Homepass. Don't play it online often, or really ever. It's mostly a "Maybe I'll beat up someone while I'm sitting in the car waiting for my girlfriend to get the hell out of work" game for me.

Well, seems like the kind of game I need for those situations also hahaha

Probably referring to paying $50 for games not worth $40
Your opinion....I feel most Atlus games provide an extreme value for the money regardless of price. I hate the price increase...but what can you do. I could do without the lame first print run sampler CDs though. Those are OK but never as good as the real soundtracks that come with most CEs.

Not pay it. No taxation without representation. Stand for nothing. Fall for anything.

Actually I forgot to add but I think anyone charging full price for a digital game when a physical copy is avaliable for the same price is not such a hot thing. I still remember chuckling a bit when people where all I'll go all Digital on my PS4 or XBOX One. The only place where a new digital file doesn't cost as much as physical is generally only for new PC releases. Hopefully we'll eventually get the consoles on board too.

Also the Atlus tax is only on 3DS games. They know they can do it and most of the time the physical copy holds out the value for at least 6 months or maybe more after it's released. It used to be just the SMT tax, but Etrian got it too. I'd be surprised if they ever decided to do it on Vita or PS4 games. Nonetheless they put out the better niche 3DS games easily imho.

I still think anybody paying $50 for non-canon (or might as well be) Persona crossover fanservice is off his rocker--same with anybody buying a $50 enhanced port of a $30 DS game. If Atlus had had the savvy to release their (once) usual soundtrack or artbook bonuses (I'm talking Persona 4 or Etrian Odyssey 3 here, not Soul Hackers or EOU) and charged $40, I'd have pre-ordered. Now I'm waiting for the games to drop to sub-$20 prices, because I know Atlus 3DS games eventually get there.

Congratulations, Atlus, you're charging more and getting less of my money.

I dare Atlus to charge 70 for Persona 5. I double dare them.
I'd be surprised if they don't have a CE of some sort for $70 or $80.

There are a number of pre-orders for retail titles below MSRP on PS4. The Witcher 3 is 10% off, PayDay 2 is 25% off, Elder Scrolls Online is 10% off for PS+, and Batman's premium edition is 10% off. Xbox One has similar offers for some of those titles. It was also a regular thing on Vita before people decided they didn't want it.

Thoughts on Resident Evil Revelations? Sounds like it's a good game for an earlier 3DS release. Or should I wait until I pick up a Wii U and get that version? If it makes a difference I have the New 3DS, so I can use the c-stick for the camera.

Other then the graphics I don't believe much was changed with RE:R from the 3DS version. If you don't have a CPP or N3DS you would probably be better off waiting for a console version since it's meant to have the second stick.

I got back into Pokemon Rumble World. I'm afraid to look at it and calculate how much I will need to grind or buy to get all balloons. :joystick:

Edit: Only $15.99 for the top tier diamond pack? I would assume you can unlock virtually everything with it. Seems like a pretty good deal for all the playtime.

Actually, forget that this was and early 3DS release, it is one of the better RE games in a very long time. The 3DS was the lead system for this title, so unless you are someone who doesn't care for gaming on the go and would rather have a console experience, it's probably the best of the bunch.

As for the controls, this is a "true" RE game, and as such, dual analog is not required, and not the true way this game is to be played. Once again, if your not a fan of the original RE control scheme, than dual analog or the CPP is required, but if your a purist, the controls are fine as is and work well. RE:R is one of the 3DS best games, hands down.
