They make it so alluring by putting in badges that can be easily knocked down, then those last ones that often get stuck take the rest of your attempts. Nintendo has the microtransaction game down-pat with these terrible, pointless, addictive collecting games...

Sorry guys, I wish you'd have asked.. the free theme right now is Animal Crossing holiday.

I'm in the middle of a move though so this would have been the earliest I could have responded though to answer it.

I am glad so many people are getting some free plays out of it though.  I feel like even though I spent about $20 on it it's been a fun ride.

My only beef (so far) besides no Pokemon system icons is that I have so many Pokemon badges they all can't fit on my home screen.

I keep forgetting to play.

I could blog about updates on my not so updated website but I feel someone out there is already posting updates.

Did great in todays Badge Arcade managed to get complete two Swapnote cranes with my free plays. I finally hit a wall in Pokemon Picross in Area 5-6 only thing I can do now is wait for the daily challenge, and do the big puzzles. I am happy that I managed to do Area 3 Puzzle 5 without any pokemon (I didn't get any Picrites but that's besides the point) so if I only rely on daily challenges I have to wait 10 days to progress, I'm very tempted to pay the two bucks just to make some more progress alas I will wait like the cheapass that I am.

Area 6 is garbage. I got nothing I will use and half of the missions can't be completed with the Pokemon I have. So discouraging. Plus a timed event pop up in Area 7, which I couldn't get to because I spent all my currency going to Area 6 instead. So mad. I managed to grind out enough currency from the trophy list that I should be able to get into Area 7 or 8 in...6 days of daily challenges. After that I'm hosed.

Wow, I haven't started PokePicross (or played Picross at all) but you guys make it sound so...... dreadful.
Nah, picross is super fun, if you're into numbers. You can always try it out for free, you can get about 1/6 of the way through before you hit the pay/wait wall. Or you could buy a not FtP picross game, there are loads. None with pokemon though.

I'm new to it as well, and like it quite a bit. Like Frisky suggested, I'll probably pick up one of the complete titles on the eShop rather than pay to advance in Pokemon Picross, but it is good enough that I'll keep playing for free and am interested in other Picross games now.

Funny that I was going to say the same thing that it seems like the better route to take unfortunately.

Freemium gaming is typically dreadful. You get massive pay walls and most devs that make the games employee people to specifically make the games as addictive as possible often through gambling mechanics (not ironically also used in the gambling industry) to reap as much money from them as they can by addicting people. It's a pretty disgusting game design practice.

If you can resist even trying freemium games or know never to put any money into them and consider them just a demo for the genre then you'll be ok.

As for Picross, it's a great series of puzzle games. The DS games are also really good with plenty of puzzles to solve. The ones on the eshop are good too (just beware of Pokemon). Think of it as Sudoku with pictures where instead of writing out numbers you are trying to determine where to color in a square on the pic based on the numbers of dots it says are in each row & column.

Here's a very simple example:

nonogram%20example.jpg

Note the top row shows 2,2... each number represents a group that is separated from another group by at least one white dot. In this case there are two groups and each have 2 dots. Note the third row is 2,4... so one group of 2 then one of 4. That row and the one above and the one below at 7 each would be very easy to figure out which dots to color since the image is only 7 dots wide. Row 1 wouldn't be as easy immediately since the two dots could start at the far left or right. The groups just have to be separated by at least one white dot. But note columns 1 and 7 both have one group of 3... if rows 2,3 & 4 were filled out then columns 1 & 7 would be complete and thus the only solution for row 1 is what is shown in the pic. Keep going from there to solve the rest of the puzzle.

It's a fun brain training style game, again... like Sudoku. except the end result is more than just a completed puzzle and the satisfaction that brings but a nice picture to go with it.

These puzzles are very small. The miussus does a ton of picross, so I import books from Japan at least once a year. They're often like 50x50, 100x100 etc. And some have colors. The books themselves are only like $5-10 before shipping for like 100 puzzles. I know it's not a 3DS game, but FYI for people who like picross but find them too easy.

Edit: Here's an example. Playing picross on the DS is actually frustrating to me, because you have to scroll so much.

Yeah I forgot about the Trophy List for picrites, I wish they had some sort of progress bar for the use x 50 times. I think this is the most devilish f2p from Nintendo makes me scared for whatever they release next.

How about a rerelease of Super Mario Bros where you have to pay for every jump. Oh, the first hundred jumps are free, but after that it's 1$ for every additional 100. You can play the arcade Mario Bros every hour to earn 1 free jump. After you rescue the princess, she steals your entire eshop wallet and makes you play the Lost Levels to get it back.

Yea, so I downloaded and played (PokwPicross) for a bit lastnight.  There are a couple points where I hemmed and hawed at the puzzle but eventually found the answer I was needing.  Then I ran out of energy (both brain and in the game).

The pictures though... I mean really... I don't think Poke looked that bad even going back to the 8 bit Gameboy days.

Yeah, if they looked better it would be more appealing to deal with the F2P stuff.

Of course there are new badges. That's why I didn't win a free play today. :-({|=

To be fair, I think it's only the second day that I haven't won or been given a free play since Badge Arcade started.

I had the equivalent experience of trying to run home in a Fallout or Elder Scrolls game while encumbered in Pokemon Picross. I didn't notice I would be low on energy points when starting a puzzle and ran out mid-puzzle, so I had to wait a minute to be able to place another dot until I finished the puzzle. Luckily, it was one of those easy 10x10 Alt World test puzzles, but that's still a shitty experience that doing well costs a lot of energy (puzzle cost + cost of placing dots). Those test puzzles didn't even offer Picrites as a reward.

There is no puzzle cost. The only energy cost is to place dots. I used that to start and stop puzzles repeatedly to grind the Use X Skill 50 times trophies for free premium currency.

Just found the Stella Glow demo last night. I LOVED FFTA, FFTA2, & Tactics Org. How I missed this one coming out idk. The price is high though. Anyone know of a deal on it?

BB GCU is the only discount on it currently but I'm sure it will have a drop in the next few months. Most Atlus games do.

It's pretty niche so we're going to have to get pretty lucky to get a good deal on it. Until we get the inevitable every other week digital Atlus sale.

Next week is B1G1 40% on Nintendo games at Best Buy, though I don't know if Stella Glow is included.

Most likely not, says Nintendo games which in the past has mean Nintendo published. Could always get a glitch or something that lets us get other games as part of it.

I don't think they would do Mario like that the recent f2p from Nintendo have been non-mario games, and even then if they did one people could just get the old games on vc or play the ds/3ds mario games instead of the f2p version. Also thanks for the tip for Pokemon Picross.

If you guys are really stuck on Pokémon Picross, there is a YouTube video of solutions to Areas 1-10.

EDIT: Smash Presentation scheduled for 12/15 at 2pm PST/5pm EST. Implied to be the final Smash DLC we'll be getting.

You know, I bet a platformer with a limited number of jumps for the entire game could be interesting to play.

There are a few games I've played that actually count jumps as part of the overall score. Beans Quest and Bean Dreams on iOS for example. I could see that kind of counting added to classic Super Mario Bros and actually be fun if it had online leaderboards for each level. Some levels though like the underwater stuff would be interesting since the number would be fairly high. Not a limit on jumps just an overall goal with bronze/silver/gold rankings as something extra to do.

But I would never play a freemium game that only allowed a limited number of jumps and pay walls and stuff to limit how far you can get in the game. That would be horrible.

That said, I have avoided the freemium Nintendo games. Nintendo shouldn't stoop to this kind of game design.

Me Dumb, nothing to see here... I'll just get my coat and slide out the back... this post never happened...

Is there a webstore for the eShop?  I don't wanna have to look at stuff through the 3DS all the time.

Nevermind, I'm an idiot.

Adventure Bar Story (CIRCLE Entertainment, on discount until 31st December)

hopefully like 2 bucks
I just bought that game like 3 weeks ago after giving up wanting it to go on sale. Yeah, you can get it for $.99 through Amazon Kindle, but I wanted it on 3DS, not mobile phone.

Anyway, I've loved it. Turn-based battle folks should like it. Gets repetitive, of course, but the formula is pretty addicting, I think.

Nah, steamworld dig was great. I do think however, that $18 for Heist is a bit too much.
