You do realize Tatanga, Cackletta, the emotion wand (Bowser's Crying! OH fuck !), the Shadow Queen, Smithy, Yaridovich, Booster, and plenty more have all fallen in the same unused Mario history pile as Wart.

Well, the SNES Mario RPG characters have the excuse that they belong to Square. Yea, Nintendo could probably bring them back if they really wanted to, but I guess they figure the Mario & Luigi series doesn't need them.

I just want to see Sonic finally wake up from the prolonged nightmare his series has become.
Isn't he like most things that were hot in the 90s? Extreme so we didn't realize they weren't really that good until later on when being extreme wasn't enough to stay relevant?

Figured i'd ask here. My niece loves animal crossing. I was looking at that new game that came out on the 3ds, Happy Home Designer, and im not sure what the hell it is. It seems like it just focused on decorating houses which she would probably like but im a bit confused on how it works. Has anyone played this? It seems to me you need amibos to play it. Is that the case? Can you play it without them? I think Amiibos are really friggin lame and refuse to buy them. So if it requires them i guess i'll just pass

Also was wondering about the Wii u game. That looks like a mario party game with Animal crossing characters basically, right? Do you need friggin amiibos for that too?

Happy Home Designer is literally a design game. You make designs for people. That's it. That's the entire game. You can open up new options, but there's no "end" and none of the tennants will dislike your designs.

The amiibo cards allow you to specifically call certain tennants and get certain equipment, but it's not required like Amiibo Festival.

Amiibo Festival requires amiibo and amiibo Cards. The figures are used in the main board game mode. The minigames are reserved for a separate mode and require the cards. The physical version comes with two figures and 3 cards to play as.

If you want to learn more, you can check out an LP of the game here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3epMsXXLnVk

Personally, I don't think I've even put 6 hours into Happy Home Designer. I would get her something else. There are far better 3DS games out there. The fact that you can't fail at the home designs makes the gameplay trivial. It's just really not that interesting.

It's Kirby week in the Badge Arcade! And they've got system icons as well! Managed to snag StreetPass Plaza, 3DS Sound, and Mii Maker badges!

Pretty meh today I would say. Got 3 plays and really wanted nothing. Got a bunch of system icons.

Half of the machines are just filled with bugs. Not cool.

You can play without Amiibos. You get new visitors to the town periodically that want you to decorate their house or design their project. The Amiibos add additional people you can do special projects for and then they'll be around town as well.

If your niece like AC, she'll like it.

I managed 4 plays today, plus the free play at the start, of course there weren't any badges I really wanted.

whats up with the little clock in the corner Can you run out of time playing this>
No, you don't run out of time, to my knowledge. I've almost completed the first year, but there's never been any indication about that, being a limit. You just have to remember that the cooking contests are on the 10th, 20th, and 30th of the month, I believe. Peddlers every 5 days or something. Nothing major about clock. The little details under the clock do tell you your Adventure Bar level.

Joining Cloud as the final Smash DLC fighters are Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates and Bayonetta!

Final wave of costumes were announced too.

Wave five:
Geno (Gunner)
Chocobo (Hat)

Wave six:
Bionic Armor (Brawler)
Takamaru (Swordfighter)
Gil from Tower of Druaga (Swordfighter)
Ashley from WarioWare (Swordfighter)
Tails (Gunner)
Knuckles (Brawler)

Just finished Box Boy, and no lie it might be my choice for GOTY.

Jonesing for more like it. Any suggestions?
Did you also do the bonus worlds and challenge levels in the shop?

Not on the same platform, but The Swapper is another fantastic puzzle platformer that challenges you to learn the full depth of its mechanics to get through its puzzles.

I'm hoping for another good sale on the eShop.  The last one with Level-5 games & Metroid was pretty good.  Hopefully we get a decent sale next week for Christmas.

Don't hold your breath, it's still Nintendo and their sales are usually the worst.

Nintendo.com is flaky at the moment, so links will come a bit later.

I'll probably grab Gunslugs 2.  I enjoyed the first one on iOS.  I'll look into the other games.  Thanks for posting the update.

Seems like it's always the same games on sale every week. Maybe Etrian Mystery Dungeon will finally go lower. But it's already below $20 at amazon.

found the print too small
3 lines per text box was too few. They can't even finish a sentence without having to advance the text. I just tried the demo and the story and art seem alright. While I'd say it's worth it at this price, I wanna wait till it goes a little lower. Maybe 50% off.

I thought Gunslugs 2 was trash. Feels like a mobile game rather than a real game.

But if you like that sort of thing why not.

THEN WHY DO YOU HAVE A REAL HANDHELD AND NOT SOME LOSER IPHAIL PIECE OF SHIT. GET OUT

Maybe Etrian Mystery Dungeon will finally go lower.
NO DONT DO IT SAVE YOURSELF

There should be no 3DS owner who doesn't have Shantae and the Pirate's Curse.
I have it on WiiU though.

I am about to argue with you given my hatred of Wayforward games but... I don't have an answer for what better Metroidvania there is on 3DS. And SatPC is certainly playable. I would bend over to pick it up off the ground unlike the last two games.

$10 is still pricey though. Comparing $20 of SatPC to $15 of Shovel Knight and it's a fuck ing joke. SK wins every day of the week and twice on Sundays. $10 SatPC? Eh... I still think the value per dollar is better in SK but it's closer...

What's so bad about Etrian Mystery Dungeon?

I know it's less brutal than Shiren The Wanderer was... but to me that's actually a huge part of the appeal for me.  I don't need every game to be brutally punishing anymore.

I was far far more frustrated in EMD than I was in Shiren and Shiren is permadeath. It sounds counterintuitive but man EMD...

If you don't mind a clever but flawed game, it's worth a shot. But there are a lot of goofy fundamental problems. The game allows you to take a party along but the AI is so fantastically stupid it is almost an entire game learning how to corral them and what each class's AI quirks are. Since none of them can play rogue like footsies that game comes at the cost of what makes rogue likes more compelling than just basic fiddly loot grinds with garbage level design.

But I actually enjoyed corralling the AI. It was annoying but I got better at it than pretty much everyone else I've seen comment on the game.

Beyond that, the skill trees are more interesting than any possible analog in any other rogue like. Some are fundamentally terrible or broken (Sovereigns miss themselves with their own buffs at nearly a 50% rate. Protectors are incredibly powerful.) but no other rogue like gives you the tools at play here.

My biggest problem is the "post game" is really kinda the main game. You save the world, get an ending, and then more dungeons open up than you played up to this point and the super ending only comes once you knock those out. Up until then the game was fine but the post game has some really atrocious boring design. The last two story dungeons basically are full of monsters who literally resist everything and can blast the entire room the second you walk in. You go from 20 dmg to the enemies per hit to 200 dmg to the boss per hit. It's so asinine and tedious getting through this nonsense.

Plus the reset dungeons are like 30 and then 100 floors long and were almost despair-inducingly boring.

Anyway it's not that bad but it felt like it missed the point of a roguelike and somewhere became a tedious grind more than a good loot grind RPG or a good roguelike. The systems at play are clever but they don't go anywhere interesting. I mean, every one of Shirens staffs are here except genocide. But since the AI is stupid, all Shirens tricks with slowing, stopping, or shifting enemies around in the space of the room are worse than useless. You can't slow an enemy and stick and move him to kill him safely because the AI will all hump him. A switch staff just puts an enemy near your teammates. A knock back staff means your combat focused AI team are gonna shout tally ho! and give chase while the squirrelly combat AI will pretend to give chase and stop once it realizes it's too far from you like some stupid dog that can't decide if it wants pets or play with the ball.

Oh and you can go in solo rather than with a party and the game pretends it can scale appropriately solo or with a team of four. A team of four is already less than the sum of its parts thanks to the AI but a solo explorer will outlevel everything so quick it will make your head spin.

I should get back to playing Shiren. Most of the roguelikes I've been playing lately have been piss easy in some way or other. Shiren does not let that crap fly.

I appreciate the detailed feedback.  Sounds like a pretty mixed bag of an experience.  I still want it... but will adjust expectations.  I was just hoping that by keeping powerlevel (and most equipped armor/weapons) after death would ultimately make the game a little less punishing for the long haul and for me maybe a little more enjoyable.

You can actually avoid any death penalty whatsoever in EMD if you don't die in a boss fight. If a team goes down, you can bring in a backup team who only has to get to them and find their corpses to avoid any loss. Of course you should be keeping a full retinue of dudes to staff forts and the like so it's nothing but wasted time. Rescue runs seem to drop almost no loot.

Boss fights cut you no slack though. And since you can be crafting up to +99 weapons and shields you may not like losing that stuff.

EMD was easy as shit. The only issue is if you want 4 party members, then the AI gets your party killed. Go with 1, max two (4 for FOE/bosses), and you'll breeze through it.

There's ten floors of the final dungeon post game between the checkpoint and the boss. I had more deaths and retreat failures on that chunk than most of the rest of the game combined and you need the party for the boss.

It's not a hard game for the entire main game though.

Still going solo only seems churlish. There are 12 classes each with unique skill trees. Docking the 4 or so terrible classes it still feels like missing the point to not have a rotation going at least.
