5.1 or 7.1 for gaming and movies

CAGiversary!
So, what's a good 5.1 or 7.1 home theater rig for gaming and movies these days? Everything I've found so far has significant compromises in terms of price and performance, be it audio or video capabilities.

I was pretty close to getting the Klipsch Quintet III http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/quintet-iii.aspx along with one of their subs, but I couldn't settle on a receiver that could do what I need it to within a reasonable price range.

Also almost pulled the trigger on the Onkyo HTIB HT-SR908 http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=HT-SP908&class=Systems&p=i, but the receiver has some intriguing drawbacks like the potential for overheating and something to do with downscaling component 1080i input to a 720p output over HDMI. Bleh.

So I guess I'm wondering what those of you who follow this stuff more closely than I do think. What will give me HDMI and quality component video along with solid audio for a pricepoint that won't leave me completely broke? I just don't feel compelled to drop over $10k on a Dynaudio set up at the moment...

Is lower-mid-range 5.1 even worth it or would I be better tossing my money into a higher quality 2.1 set up? Any thoughts on those soundbars that are popping up these days?
