Is Papa John's hurting that badly? Seems like there's 50 different ways to get discounted pizza from them compared to Pizza Hutt and Domino's.

Papa John's isn't really hurting, but they just want to advertise and support eSports. There are indeed a lot of coupons out there for all pizza companies but 50% is kinda hard to turn away for the customers. :D

It's a test. eSports is growing stronger every day. Papa John's is trying to see if it is worth investing in the eSports scene. If this promotion is a success, other franchises will want to get a piece of the eSports action which = bigger and stronger eSports scene. It's really smart of them, honestly.
 
It isn't just the eSports thing. They have the giveaway contests with the NFL. They have deals with a lot of MLB teams for heavy discounts (for example, any time the Orioles win and score 5+ runs, you get 50% off a pizza) and I get a ton of coupons in my junk mail. You have to try in order to get a PJ pizza at regular price.
