From the Chicago Sun-Times:

The founder of Domino's Pizza is starting a Florida town where he will build a Catholic university -- and possibly keep out contraception.

Tom Monaghan, who sold Domino's years ago, is using his fortune to help construct Ave Maria, a town and school near Naples, Fla.

"I believe all of history is just one big battle between good and evil," he was quoted as saying this week by Newsweek. "I don't want to be on the sidelines."

Monaghan, a conservative Catholic, controls the commercial real estate in Ave Maria along with a developer, the magazine said.

He wants drugstores to keep birth control off their shelves, and the developer said it would favor pharmacies with such a policy, according to Newsweek. A clinic opening already has said it would refuse contraception to students.

His attempt to restrict contraceptives may clash with the American Civil Liberties Union.

"It is completely naive to think this first attempt will be their last," the ACLU's Howard Simon told Newsweek. He argues that the Supreme Court has ruled that owning a city doesn't always equal "absolute dominion."

The ACLU may not get much support from Ave Maria's residents. According to Newsweek, the town probably will draw church-centered families, and there have been 7,000 home-buying inquiries.

Stupid, Dumb dumb Idea. You need birth control. Unless you ban alcohol, too. Then porn. it's just stupid. The birth rate will skyrocket there, because people will have sex no matter what.

Damn I thought this was going to be a giant horny party town where people have unprotected sex all day cuz they all are on birth control.

judging that by the title anyways.

Man, that's awesome. Starting a town to combat Evil and keep birth control away from people. I can't wait to read the town charter!

Me too, shouldn't it be "A town withOUT birth control..."?

I would imagine that if you forced people to eat Domino's thrice a day, that could successfully be argued as a form of birth control in court.

Kinda sheds some light on that Domino's commercial where the guy keeps his kids in the dark, and funtime is turning on the lamp.

Get the door - it's theocratic oppression!

This is just further proof that florida is one fucked-up state. Last week was the bill allowing people to carry guns into work. What will next week be?

Hell, the only time I've ever been to florida, I had a hard time finding a hotel in the tampa/clearwater/sarasota area -- which is when the Terri Schiavo fiasco was going on.

Abortions, pornography and contraceptives will be banned in the new Florida town of Ave Maria, which has begun to take shape on former vegetable farms 90 miles northwest of Miami. .....

About 15 years ago he read Mere Christianity by CS Lewis. “That was a big turnaround,” he said recently. “I decided to simplify my life. No more airplanes, no more yachts. It’s been a big relief.”

Sources close to the project said Monaghan was particularly disturbed by what he regards as the failure of western civilisation to resist Islamic fundamentalism. In a speech to students last year Healy warned that Islam “no longer faces a religiously dynamic West”.
Healy described the “virtual collapse of Europe” as “one of the most profound and unsettling developments of our new century”. He added: “If you consider the more telling signs, such as its plummeting birth rate, Europe does not even seem to believe in a future . . . children are a sign of hope and the fruit of obedience to God’s command to be fruitful and multiply.” ....

Lawsuits appear inevitable once the new town begins functioning in 2007, but Monaghan believes he has more than the law on his side. “I think it’s God’s will to do this,” he said.

So, basically, there's no pornography, contraceptives or abortion. So the only way to recieve sexual stimulation is through intercourse or other physical contact (which will lead to sex). No contraceptives can be used to prevent pregnancy, and no abortions can be done to stop pregnancy. Therefore, his town is fulfilling gods command to "be fruitful and multiply".

Hollywood has forseen the coming of this town; lo, the prophecy has been written.

BEHOLD!

This "rapture" thing that was talked about in another thread can't come soon enough.

Ok, now let's think about this. The man wants to run this town along Catholic lines, right? Meaning that Catholic schools are a foregone conclusion. And if you know your Red Hot Chili Pepper history, you'll know that "Catholic Schoolgirls Rule." Seriously, if you're of high school age, why wouldn't you want to move there to get in on all that hot oppressed schoolgirl action?

From the sound of it, you'll likely have to have a parent accompany you, too, if you go out in public away from school.

Kids always find a way to get their fuck on

Bah, domino's was never as good as pizza hut or papa john's anyway...a little better than little caesar's, but they're cheaper and have good stuffed crust.

So yeah, fuck domino's and fuck their little town thing that will fail miserably.

I love how all the liberals start talking about how much they've always hated Domino's and whatnot the second they hear about this.

Before ya'll start screaming at me though:
I agree for the most part, this town is just asking for failure. The second it's open a hoard of ACLU lawyers will jump in demanding their Constitutional rights be respected. I wouldn't buy my tickets to Florida just yet guys. ;)

One person derided the quality of Dominos pizza - ONE. If you're going to complain about so-called liberal solidarity, you may want to do a quick fact check first (assuming you don't want to appear more idiotic then George 'mission accomlished' Bush on the perpetual hunt for fictional WMDs)

I provided proof that I've boycotted Dominos from the moment I found out about them from buyblue.org, well over a year or two ago.

It's fuckin' PIZZA. If there's one common thing about pizza, it's the fact that everybody's deluded into thinking *their* region of the country has the best pizza: Chicago, New York, California (dunno the specific regions, but y'all have those bourgeoisie fuckin' pizzas), and even Cincinnati (fuckin' LaRosa's alone could keep me from moving from this city).

The point is, you're an idiot with no palate whatsoever if you even want to begin complimenting the quality of pizza served by national chains. Pizza Hut, Domino's, Donato's; they're all the same bland, dreadful, greasy box of bullshit. I don't buy their food NOT because their corporate owner is a shortsighted religious fuckwit who's trying to recreate Celebration, FL with a decidedly foolish Catholic twist (well, if it's Catholic at least it won't be a dry town!).

I don't buy their food because it sucks fuckin' ass, and I have more dignity than to order from there. If I want pizza, I have options; this ain't a one-horse town.

Damn skippy! Any town sponsored by Domino’s will no doubt soon find its citizenry too fat to fuck in the first place. :D

By god, you're a crazy man! Clearly there's a difference between those national chains, especially considering the crusts! Even the sauces are clearly different! How dare you consider the buttery crispy crust of a pan pizza from pizza hut the same as a stuffed crust from little caesar's or a regular crust from papa john's dipped in delicious garlic sauce goodness.

Just because it's national doesn't make it bad, nor does being local make it good!

But anyway, I want to get some pizza today, from this place called "extreme pizza." I really hate to support a place with "extreme" right in the name, but maybe they have good pizza, we'll see...

I honestly dont have too much of a problem with this situation. No one is being forced to live there. There are people that WANT to live there. So just let them have their own little place. Maybe someone will move there FROM YOUR TOWN, and everyone will be happier.

It is strange to legislate these things, but plenty of small towns somewhat like this exist already, just informally, without everything being official. I've passed through many such towns.

In the South

There was a strange Italian man who did something like this in the late 20's up through the 30's. If I'm not mistaken, he also had ties to the Catholic church. I just can't remember his name for the life of me. Oh well, he probably wasn't too important...

Easy tiger, I agreed with you.

Retract those claws of hatred for two seconds and try to act normal.

The guy wanting to "start" up this town, was the founder of Domino's. The next line or a few lines down, tells you that he sold it years ago. So the link to Domino's is only via the founder, who is no longer the owner.

But moreso on topic, if kids want to get their freak on, there are always ways to get the contraception, porn, and whatever else they need. Just go to the next town over and get it. Or order (or view) it on the internet. Unless of course the local post office is going to let the "owner" of the town inspect every package that comes in the mail. But being a federal building, I doubt the PO would allow it.

Yeah well EZB may no one here should eat Domino's since they've supported trying to prevent the Minimum Wage in Michigan. Seriously people make little enough on Minimum Wage, specially if you're working in a fucking pizza place for it.

Well, people get stressed out about these issues - one side thinks it amounts to killing babies and the other thinks that their right to plan parenthood is being threatened. The last time I had a real discussion of abortion/birth control/etc was when I was taking philosophy in college, in the political realm it just turns into a shouting match between dogma and liberal rationalism most of the time.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but very few people make the minimum wage, and many/most of those are students working doing things like delivering pizza while going go school. Read this:
