Ace Combat 6 - Demo is up

THIS GAME RULES.

But is there any way to beat the demo? Like, can you accomplish a mission or anything? Because I just spent 30 minutes of shooting planes and helicopters out of the sky for no apparent reason. It still ruled, but I would have liked to have known whether or not I was supposed to do something.

Man, Blue Dragon has been downloading for the last 7 hours, and its only at 62%. So i'll have to wait to play that adn Ace Combat 6 :(

You're suppoed to shoot down all the "target" planes (i.e. the bombers), then...
The enemy mothership (yes, a fucking mothership) launches about a jillion nukes at your fair city, wasting over half your force. Then, after the nukes own you, the enemy's elite air force (black jets, red color scheme, reminiscent of the Razgriz scheme of AC5) swoops in to waste you.

That was about as far as I got before I had to leave for work.

Conclusion: I want this game.

Haven't played a flying game since Pilotwings64 and haven't owned a flying game since Top Gun on NES.

That said, I'm looking forward to getting back into the genre. Yes I'm aware I missed out on Crimson Skies.

I hadn't played an Ace Combat game since 3 for the PS2 a number of years ago, but then picked up the one that came out for PSP last year and 4 for the PS2 as a GH title ($20). Both are very good games - right balance of story, simulation, and action. I wish I'd known the demo was up so I could have queued it up this morning before taking off for the day - guess I'll have to do the overnight d/l. Can't wait to fire this up on the HD screen!

This will sound dumb but can anyone give me the exact directions to get to the download in the marketplace...Basically the only way I can dl something I wont have a screen to look at.

I know its left twice, a....then what?

You haven't missed out on Crimson Skies yet, you should pick up a copy, they're like $3 at EBgames. Great game, I was actually hoping to hear about a sequel at the MS conference.

Ace Combat is a great series and I can't wait to try this out.

I was heavily anticipating this but now that the demo is out, I might wait for a review. Graphics are fantastic, but I had a very "Crysis" feeling while playing it just because the gameplay was so boring. Enemy planes don't do much to avoid you or really try and kill you or to evade, there's just a billion of them as cannon fodder. Oh yes, 50 billion missiles and infinite guns, pity theres no option for a more realistic mode.

It seems like a hastily hacked together demo with essentially hardcoded AI, at least that's what I'm hoping so the full version is a lot more impressive. I'm going to wait on the reviews and the flightstick purchase sadly. I have no problems paying a price drop price for this in its current form tho

I havent gotten Project Sylpheed so far (which I'm also heavily anticipating), probably pick that up today but comparing the demos together, sylpheed has better gameplay hands down so far.

Go all the way to the left and you'll hit the marketplace blade. Select game demos and then new arrivals. AC6 should be right there. Then just select it and download.

Agreed.

This played alittle different then I remembered. I was pissed off flying around from a to b, whic took some time, to shoot them. The ending blew, some cruser napalm for planes, definatly not nukes. And it ends pretty much right after that.
Ok those directions didnt work. All i have dl is a vid of ac 6...So if anyone else wants to chip in it would be appreciated

alright, try:

Left, Left, Down, Down, A, A, A, A, A

My tv is definately too small for this game. Looks like they hired capcom to do all the hud text.

Pretty fun demo though, will probably be a rental.

Yeah, even on my rather large widescreen-enhanced 4:3 SDTV, the text in the HUD is tiny. I can make out the TGT markers, but if they were any smaller, I'd be in serious trouble.

The end of the mission sucked. Go west, young man. Good thing I got there with 10 seconds left. I spent the rest of the time fighting everybody.

ok I've spent a bit more time with this and I'm very disappointed.

Pros
in engine cutscenes are damn near photorealistic and cinematography is top notch. Even the auto replay system is amazing, the angles it chooses literally can make the most boneheaded flying look like it came out of top gun. This is a better flight simulator than MS Flight Simulator, lots of details in terrain and cloud as you fly around and through them, you can buzz the water etc. Splashes when you shoot at the water are quite satisfying. Overall very fun to fly in. Visual effects are top notch. You can basically tell where everyone is from the smoke trails, explosions etc.

Cons
AI - non existent, seriously. The planes just sit there, no attempt to come after you. Half the time you get groups of bombers and fighters miles away from each other. On the rare case that the fighter escort is actually with the bombers, they do nothing. You just fly lesiurely along and use missiles like bullets and they dont even break escort or come after you. The Ace Combat series is supposed to be known for its shooting gallery bajillion missile style, but this is really bad even compared to the PS1 versions I played. Wingman commands? this is inexcusable. Just two. Attack and Cover. And I could swear they both do nothing
icon_smile.gif
You can fire missiles (or just about anything) at other planes forward flight paths and they won't even bother evading.

Combat - non existant. Game should be called Ace Flying. Even when it says "missile alert" I have NEVER been shot down or even seen a missile on my ass. Half the time your wingmen go "Garuda 1 you have an enemy locked onto you break break!" um nothing happens. I delibrately cut throttle and just sat at cruising altitude and 5 mins later, not one missile or anything. No countermeasures (none are in the game either). Wingman? "great job and evasive manuevers Garuda 1".

Mission structure and "the living battlefield" - Its really obvious you are basically moving from one shooting gallery to the next with cutscenes in-between loads. You go from one "battle" where you shoot down 50-5000 planes while most of them are asleep at the wheel to "OMG half of us are down, we're getting nuked" and then um repeat. There is no continuous mission structure, when stuff happens in other air/space combat games it actually happens in the same mission. The "living battlefield" is dead. Essentially its a bunch of scripted chatter that happens the same way every time and has no relation to whats happening in gameplay? why because what's being talked is not happening in gameplay. It's not happening at all. There is the potential of a Chromehounds repeat here as the multiplayer options they're promising are still pretty cool and may redeem this title.

Terrain - yes terrain looks cool when it's not city related but in the demo you get mostly the city and the quality is uneven. The buildings are basically single poly Flight Sim 1 style, you can't blow them up. There's no physics and when you crash into one you get a convenient cut and smoke particle. Anything that isn't a skyscraper is basically a blurry texture. Not even mip maps. One catchall blurry texture, blurry from afar, blurry when close. Very FS1 style.

Physics and damage - flight physics are decent/basic. You can cobra and that's about as complicated as it gets. There's basically no other physics related to damage or anything else i.e. ground vehicles, sea vessels getting blown up etc.

Story - it happens on its own and frequently doesnt even involve you

Realism - um well there's a "Hard mode", well it's called normal anyway. It's supposed to be more realistic but that means you get 50 missiles instead of 100 and you still have infinite gun ammo. NO COCKPIT VIEW.

Ok in all fairness, this is probably a hastily hacked together demo for E3.It follows the Forza 2 example of how NOT to do a demo.. I'd pay maybe $20 for this in its current form, but probably I hope someone just makes a movie out of all the cutscenes in the game. However contrary to my opinion the general response seems mostly postitive and revolving around "OMFG THE GRAPHICS". This is probably going to be a good game for those who just want to show off their system and aren't too demanding about their games. In other words it should have been for PC. However 386 flight sims I played back in the day like THX and Chuck Yeager destroy this

entertaining demo, but i can see it getting old pretty damn quickly. definitely not worth full price for me.

Thanks for the tip on the cockpit view. The game is a LOT better in cockpit view, but still my issues with the gameplay and lack interactivity remain. Oddly enough the different view angle fixes the blurry look of the ground city textures a bit

Am considering pre-ordering the ac6 flight stick/game combo, but in order to justify my purchase I need to know about the potential for this stick to be used with other games. Does anyone know if it is likely to be compatible with other future flight games on the system even if they are developed by other publishers? Also, can a flight stick ever be used on a game that was designed before its release (such as blazing angels), or do games have to be designed with the specific stick in mind? I think I would be more comfortable with this stick if it was an official microsoft piece of hardware like the racing wheel, then at least all future applicable releases would probably have to be made compatible (assuming this hypothetical microsoft flight stick didn't overheat and somehow burn my face off).

Thanks to all who respond (ps i hope this doesn't belong somewhere else but I couldn't find an ace combat 6 thread)

ace combat 7? :p well if microsoft DOES release one, then yours would just be a 3rd party item, which should work if microsoft puts it in future games.

A rather intersting event for a series that has never had a real strong multiplayer component.

https://acecombat6.ggl.com/

As you can see, there's Military VS Military, Civ VS Civ, Military VS Civ, and 8 player free for all. There ain't much info now, as the actually site will be up on the 19th, but from what I've read on the tubes is that the tournament starts on the 5th of November, giving people about 2 weeks of practise.

2 Man team, anyone interested? I've personally have been playing the series since 2 (was devistated after lost of 5 year save file), but I've grew distant from the game for the last 2 titles (0 and X).

I wasn't going to buy this at launch, but it seems that I'm going to go and pre order it right now. Good thing I just got an Amazon prime trail (3 invites left if anyone is interested), so I'll have the bundle shipped 1 day.

***OFFICIAL RULES***
http://www.ggl.com/acecombat/AceCombatOfficialRulesandRegulations.pdf

Hmm, I actually get back from a trip on the day of the finals, Jan 12th, I probably will have to get back a day earlier.
I've also seen people say you have to be over 18 to register, but I can't confirm that anywhere. Not a problem for me though.

Well...Ace Combat 6 comes out this week. I've played nearly all of the previous Ace Combat games but never with a flightstick.

So...

Who is getting the bundle?

Any experience with past Ace Combat bundles? How is the gameplay experience with the sticks?

have to figure out which games to part with so I can get store credit to buy this.

so where's the thread about this game?

Already preordered a while back, 25 off with gift card and 3.99 1 day amazon prime shipping. I already mentioned that there's a tournament going on in another thread, but no one really cared. If you're interested, just check the official site, though there's already 70 some civilian teams (with only 5 military teams).

edit: scratch that, 91 civilian teams now

As for sticks, it really is simpler playing ace combat games with sticks, especially if you like to use guns. Not really nessisary for someone who might just play once or twice though, as it's a little over priced. They don't even use all of the buttons, or sometimes they assign some to do the same thing. Great if you play PC games too though. I dove so much in Freespace 2, I broke the rudder control on my Flight Stick 2 for AC5.

I picked up the game this morning and was wondering how're the sticks? Worth the extra money, or do they flail around as you try to move them. In other words, are they weighed down or anything?

I picked up the sticks. They're great. They're held down by suction cups.

Did anyone else order the flight stick bundle thru Amazon? I pre-ordered a few weeks ago but my order info says it's not shipping 'tlll the 29th for some reason. Don't know if that's because I chose free shipping or if I pre-ordered too late and I'm waiting for it to be re-stocked.

I emailed them and they said that their shipment was late. Though at the same time they also said that they got some in already, so it's first come first serve from there I guess.

I just decided to get it from gamefly for the time being so I can atlesat play through it with a normal controller and not have to worry about the internets spoiling the game for me again.

Ah, so what if you don't have something to suction them to? Like, I play video games in my bedroom, laying/sitting on my bed, so I wouldn't have anything to suction them to. That wouldn't work out for me, would it?

And no, I wouldn't want to get a lap table or something.

Amazon has them in stock now, mine is about to ship out soon. Was about to add 30 bucks of Gift certificates I just found, but damn thing already went into the shipping process.

wow compare to the ps2 version the control is pretty bad for this game. Since the X360 controller buttons are not pressure sensitive, they use the trigger button for throttle. you basically have to use your middle finger for the throttle as you need to press L1+L2 or R1+R2

Overall, I felt the Campaign is as adrenaline pumping and awesome and 4 and 5 (so far).

Multiplayer needs a good overhaul though. Cockpit text actually needs to be big enough to read in multiplayer, so I can see who I killed, how much damage I have, etc.

Also, when my teammate talks, how about a pop-up on who it is, and mark them on my radar so I can go to help them. MP is still cool and all, but feels like Campaign with unscripted talking and a lot more cursing and dying.

The PS2 used the triggers for the throttle as well. I'm confused as to what you mean. Yeah, the face buttons aren't pressure sensitive so it affects the map button. But the triggers are pressure sensitive, so it's the same as when it was on the PS2.

You can hit the D-pad to request help, and it highlights you on your allies radar as needing help. Also I can see the cockpit text fine. Maybe it's one of those things you need a HDTV for?

Does anyone know if Best Buy will be carrying the Flight Stick Bundle of this game? I'd really like to pick it up but don't see it listed on their website, and would like to use my giftcards.
