I just received an email about this from Amazon.

As you may know, the PlayStation 3 120 GB is in great demand, and there are shortages of this product across the U.S. In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase PlayStation 3 120 GB, we are limiting the total number of PlayStation 3 120 GB units that can be purchased. Jumped on this and got it for my little brother (his birthday is next month). With free online and a solid line-up, he'll forget all about his red ringed 360 ;)
 
Yeah, I know many who bought PS3s in the 40gig era and will buy a new slim since the cost to upgrade the hard drive isn't too far off. I went with a 320gb awhile back, thanks to Fallout 3 data files being pretty big.

What really surprises me is the stores i've been around the area have been selling out of the fatty 80gig. Guess people really wanted one right away.
 
Thinking of selling my 80GB BC Motorstom bundle PS3 on eBay for what I can get and getting this slim. My current one can be quite loud with the fan noise, and that makes it annoying when watching movies.
 
Yep the 80gb motorstorm and 80gb mgs4 ps3s are LOUD. I sold my mgs4 ps3 and picked up a vanilla 65nm 80gb for that reason. Way quieter system.
 
i think 299 is still way over priced for a blu-ray player, once these drop down to 150 then i'll start considering it as long as the blu-ray movies drop down to 2o bones or less otherwise paying 300 bucks for a blu-ray player is just stupid!
 
Now that the 60GB has dropped to $325 on GS/EB, wouldn't that be a better deal? I'm thinking about dumping my 40GB and getting it, especially for the BC, huge backlog of PS2.

The only issue I see with GS/EB is the condition of those consoles. I mean, the issues are probably slim, but if you do get one from a store or online, make sure you do a thorough check.

I myself would recommend checking eBay and see if they are generally around the same price by a "1" owner, making your pickup more the worthwhile.

My 60GB is still kicking.

Yes $299 is expensive for a blu-ray player, but hardly expensive for a high def game console with free online gaming that yes - happens to play blu-rays.

this post is epic fail!:bomb: PS3 isn't just a blu-ray player. Also, all you gotta do is shop around and you shouldn't ever be paying more than $20 for a blu-ray right now.
 
Just ordered the slim with free two day shipping + Amazon Prime Trial. The auto email said the estimated date is 8/28. Nothing beats fast shipping that's free. :)
 
I guess the 360 is just an overpriced dvd player, and the Wii is just a weight loss program.

This is way off topic... but do you think the Wii is worth it? I bought one yesterday but haven't had the heart to open it yet. I WANTED to buy a PS3 but then I saw the Wii for $220 so I jumped on that deal. Do you think that the Wii will ever be under or around the $150 mark? I don't want to spend over $200 on a gaming machine that is subpar at best in terms of specs. Should I sell my Wii and just wait until it's price is low.

Those who own a Wii what do you think of it? Overhyped, fun, piece of junk?

If I do sell my Wii I intend on buying the PS3 slim.

If you don't want a machine subpar in specs, then you don't want a Wii. I'd return it to the store. It's no substitute for a PS3.
 
I cant believe that people are still gullible enough to buy a Wii at that price point. Nintendo is not just laughing all the way to the bank, they are laughing directly in the face of every person that buys that piece of shovel ware infested and sorry excuse for a game console. At this point, you have to be a complete and utter moron to buy a Wii for retail price.

I bought it yesterday from Fred Meyer, so do you think they would let me return it. I'm sure they would normally... but the thing is that when I bought it, they were running a promo where you get a $50 gift card with purchase of Wii. That's the only reason I bought the POS was because of the free gift card with purchase.

Do you still have the gift card? Return everything and you should get full credit. If you already used the gift card, you should still be able to return it, minus the $50 from the card.

nope, I used the gift card on a couple games (halo 3 and metal gear solid trilogy pack). i would think the customer service desk would see that i got a free gift card and refuse to give me a refund. i'll give em a call and see what they can do.

well whatever, if it doesn't work out I can just sell it on craigslist, would take a $10-15 hit but that wouldn't be too bad.

On topic, I used my Prime shipping and got an estimated delivery for Thursday of this week. Pretty excited, especially since I used my promotional code and trade-in credit to get it for $150.

To the guy who bought the Wii, don't base your purchase on the power behind the system, but on the kind of gaming experience you're looking for. If you're a family man/casual gamer, the Wii may be more your cup of tea. And a $50 gift card is a pretty nice incentive, even if you paid $250 for the console.

BUT, my opinion: As a former Wii owner (operative word being "former"), I'd pay the extra $50 MSRP for a PS3 over a Wii any day.
 
I really want to jump on this but I will wait until next weeks ads come out and see if there are any deals like that fake one posted from best buy. I have a 60gb that I am going to sell once I get the slim so I am not in a hurry.

The fake bestbuy ad is stupid. Sony only announced that they were releasing the 120gb slim as far as I know. Plus $10 for Assassins Creed, Metal Gear Solid 4, Lair, Bioshock is freaking ridiculous so it must have been fake.

Am I the only person that doesn't understand why everyone wants to sell their old PS3 to buy the new slim PS3. IT'S THE SAME EXACT CONSOLE, JUST SMALLER. If you want that 120gb hard drive just upgrade it. The only reason I want a slim is because a) I currently don't own a ps3 nor have I before this point in time b) I buy the 120gb slim which is supposedly more efficient than 80gb and get 40gb of extra storage memory for the same price.

For those of you who own a PS3 right now, why not just keep it until it breaks down THEN go and buy the new slim.

I have had my 60 since launch, I dont use BC and yes the fan is louder than I would like plus I never really liked the look of it. I want a new slim just for the matte finish and more importantly it uses less power, I will absolutetly miss my card slots and extra usb ports. I would much rather let somebody that would use the BC have it then waste this feature on me. I have listed my PS3 on craigs for an even swap of a new slim just for this reason.
 
Does anyone know if Walmart or Target will be stocking the PS3 slim early? Is gamestop stocking them on Monday? I want to get one as soon as possible and these online buys are iffy at best as far as ship date and availability.

your 60Gb has backwards compatibility, while the slim does not. Why not spend your money on a HD upgrade instead of untested hardware? At least wait to sell your 60Gb until the slim comes out and the demand for BC grows once again.

I honestly believe demand will fall for BC PS3s, and the reason I'm selling mine is that I hardly play PS2 games and the lower power consumption and smaller size is important to my. As for untested hardware, I honestly trust Sony because the PS3 has been so reliable and we're still getting a one year warranty.

Which is a 1 day difference from the previous e-mail (August 27 arrival)

I'd be inclined to agree with you, but I think it's an important thread given the extremely high interest the Slim is facing. People need to know how long it'll take Amazon to send them their pre-order when using Prime all the way to Free Shipping.

So it's more of a "discussion" thread than deal really. Still -- there are people who have the $50/$75 coupon from an earlier Amazon promotion so this is certainly a deal for them!

$50 says you will find this on day 1 when its released and there will be no shortages. I know someone at Gamestop that told me they don't expect to run out of stock like the Wii did in its Prime.

This is not the second coming of the PS3... sorry. Ebay hoarders are wasting their time.
 
Yeah, I don't get why some people are willing to ditch their Fat systems just to get s slim. If anything, the slim is made really cheap-o. You know Sony cut every corner making the slim and it looks more like a kids toy now than a serious piece of hardware. I was going to get a slim until I found a Fatty bundled with MLB THE Show and QOS blu-ray for 296. I'll take a top tier exclusive game and Bond movie over a cheaper system with a larger HDD.
 
I considered getting a PS3 Slim to replace my PS3 Fat, but I ended up canceling it a day or so ago. My full BC has a 320gb 7200rpm HDD; and once I saw some more pictures of the Slim, I really started doubting whether I wanted one. I thought the PS3 Fat was ugly when I first saw it, but this thing is on a whole new level imo. Anyways, it's just my opinion. I'm generally pretty happy to find any excuse to waste my money on a new video game hardware purchase, so I don't think I'm too biased.

The thing that really turned me off from the new design was how they decided to make it smaller. They made it longer, and it's still fairly wide. The fact that the depth is a lot less really doesn't appeal to me, since it's convex on the top, so I can't stack it I really wish they had decided to go away with the convex top, then I may have purchased one. As it is, I don't really think it would save me any space, and my PS3 is whisper silent as it is. As for power consumption, I live in Florida so the 10 hours my PS3 is on a week is a pittance compared to my A/C bill right now. Maybe, I'd be singing a different tune if it was Winter.
