Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

Meh want Dark Souls, but I used the code on Faster Than Light thinking I wouldn't need to buy anything off of Amazon and wanted the free games. Only things I were looking for were Steam only or were bundle packs. Live in learn :p

$7.50 a good price if your wanting play it if you already owned it I'll agree keep waiting till it hits $5 or in a bundle  since you waited this long

I wasn't really working on anything -- just gave him the contact info of a lawyer who might have been in charge of the IP. Not sure if he managed to get contact via him or a RI state employee. Long story short: he had initial talks, he gave them the paperwork, they never responded, shortly after it went on a daily sale on Steam, nothing since.
I get the feeling that when Tony mentioned Steam, whoever he spoke to assumed it was a request to do business with Steam and had no idea about how the keys or distributors worked. I could imagine the language causing that confusion to someone who may not understand how all these services work.

For all they knew Steam was the name of Amazon's digital gaming service.

My other assumption is kinda the dark side: After the RI rep spoke to Steam about keys fully knowing what Steam and Amazon was, some Valve employee said "eff that Amazon crap, you want to roll with the big dogs". Thus the Steam only KOA sale was born and Amazon was left looking at the prom through the windows.

I suspect it was the second theory. RI rep spoke to Steam to request keys and Steam told them, why go through all that trouble, we can put it on sale here. So basically Amazon did all the legwork and Steam just stole the glory.

I seriously, seriously doubt you'll ever see Dark Souls in a bundle. Amazon has never had a Namco bundle afaik.

Also, the game just had an MSRP drop fairly recently, so the odds of seeing the game at $5 anytime remotely soon are very slim. Your only odds at getting the game for cheaper than $7.50 + 15% off are to wait for GMG to have a sale on it. Problem with that is that GMG still has the MSRP higher than Steam and Amazon, and I've never seen them have a good sale on the game.

Even then, you'd only be saving another 10%. There's really no point to waiting it out at this point unless you have no interest in the game.

What I don't get is why the one time sale.  Was expecting Amalur to be on sale during this promotion... I was bamboozled!

Yeah for sure, it helps. I think my system is choking a bit on all the backfills. I have had a bunch of people reply that they've gotten their code within minutes and others like you that are waiting a bit longer. Sorry for the delay but I think everything should flow through today.

I'll follow up as I get more info.

Cheers,
Tony
Tony - I have sent you a couple PMs (with my order numbers), and I have not received the backfill yet. I ordered over 24 hours ago. Just letting you know.

Thanks.

Well I have it on PS3 so I'm in no rush, but kind of want to play the DLC.

One reason I can see to pass is if you need to upgrade your machine to enjoy it in all it's 1080p glory...Like with every game, unless you plan to play it pretty soon, waiting is generally never going to hurt you unless it's of the old Amazon glory day bundles where things are 90%-95% off or the company is going out of business (think THQ and their Dawn of War stuff which hasn't been lower I don't think).

GMG would probably eventually fix their msrp and coupons are pretty regular with them so I can see 75% + 20%. We're also getting into the latter half of the year where holiday sales (which tend to be better) will start soon. I'm really hoping Amazon does awesome stuff again with game bundles.

I agree you should get it with the coupon if you plan to play it soon, but I've been really holding back with purchases lately since 75% to me is now the regular price for anything (my machine is slow so I tend to avoid newer stuff anyways) and lack of time and the backlog only grows.

Only thing I've picked up since Feb is some DLC for Deux Ex: HR on steam using steam wallet from selling card drops.

Well, I just don't rely on GMG these days. Their sales are very particular and sparse, and I've never seen them put a good price on Dark Souls.

But yeah, if your system can't run it well, no point in buying it now. It's not really the hardest game to run though.

Well, turning off any Ambient Occulsion can really help out Dark Souls PC.

W/ AO stuff off, that can split the damn framerates in half - especially on boss fights.

You really need those frames - especially since the game's locked at 30 FPS.

AO off solved a lot of my Dark Souls PC framerate issues on my PC (i7 950; 1 GB of GF GTX 560 Ti; 8 GB RAM; Win 7 64-bit).

Amalur is now in active litigation, I very much doubt we'll see any further action until that is finally resolved.
It's not in 'active litigation.' The receiver has just been preparing the IP for auction although that has been going on for seemingly a year or more now. Someone is in control of the IP, otherwise there wouldn't have had been that one daily sale on Steam after Tony got in touch with them. Clearly, in the interim, they're willing to reap the cash proceeds. It would be nice if they set up the auction and dished it off to another party -- have no idea what is taking so long.

My only guess is that the 'interested parties' they hinted at a few months ago requested it not be discounted or whatever. That said, you'd think it would be pulled from Steam altogether. I'm sure there are some people buying it for full price on Steam... that money has to be going somewhere.

I just want to confirm that the Mount & Blade collection on Amazon doesn't come with the Napoleonic Wars expansion and since it's with the one on Steam (and is 9.99 separately on Amazon) that the best way to buy that set would be directly of off Steam right?

Hey dude,

Thanks for this, I was just checking the thread for an example. I have an open ticket with our engineering team and am adding examples as I go. Thanks for the patience, no idea why it isn't backfilling. I will try your order ID again.

Cheers,

Tony

It doesn't take much to run Dark Souls.. It was pretty and 30 FPS (default glitch-free cap) on my GTX 260 @ 1920x1200.

...and if you're running something less than a GTX 260, well you're used to knocking a few settings down or playing at lower res already.

glad to hear this, I sent you a PM as well, hopefully this gets fully resolved soon as it's got to be a pain for you ><:

Tony,

Any chance you can talk to your Microsoft rep about adding Pinball FX2 tables to your offerings and maybe running a nice bundle with them (all would be great)? I'm really tempted to pick them up in the Steam sale but 50% off is a bit above my threshold. For reference, here's the Steam listing: http://store.steampowered.com/app/226980/

If you could put something together at 75%+ off that'd be very attractive.

If they put all the tables in a bundle at 75% off, I'd hit buy and download as quick as humanly possible.

I second this. I just want the Marvel tables. I might speak to the game rep on the Steam forums. She's a regular there in case anyone wants to help pitch this to her.

Also, Tony I pm'd you about not getting Party of Sin. I don't know what difference it makes telling you, but I saw others do it and now I'm following. See you at the bottom of a bridge.

Add me to the group that never received Party of Sin.  Ordered over 24 hours ago.  Is this going to go through automatically or do we need to contact customer service?

So no one has grabbed the Amazon version?
You can't mix the steam and non-steam versions. It's in a FAQ for the game somewhere - probably on their forum.

Just to clarify this, you can own both on the same kalypso account and use whichever you prefer. But you can't have say the base game non-steam and the expansion/slc steam or vice versa and expect them to work together as one.

I had retail Tropico 4 and bought the Steam CE because it was cheaper than buying the expansion for my retail copy!

I'm bummed that Amazon doesn't carry Fallen Enchantress. No Stardock games, eh?
Wow, well I tried incessantly to get Tony to talk with Stardock and to start carrying their games last year. Before the Winter Sale I believe around the time that Fallen Enchantress hit the market.

Apparently, no dice.

HI, My fahter bought Mark of the Ninja [Online Game Code] yesterday.
But we don't get the free game "Party of Sin".

I PM the Amazon ID and ORDER ID for you.

Plz help us.

Tony, thanks for the price match earlier on Sleeping Dogs.  I picked that up last night with the GOONCAVE voucher for the cheapest the game has ever been, sans price errors.  Thanks!

I remember someone posted a summary of the Sleeping Dogs DLC, which type of DLC each one was (item, missions, "pay to cheat" DLC, etc). Does anyone have that post somewhere?

With Far Cry 3 retail constantly bouncing around $20 lately it would be AMAZING to see a Far Cry 3 + Blood Dragon Steam key bundle for around $15.

WINK WINK NOD NOD ; D

You'll likely be able to add that to your Origin account with the key or by talking to CS. You should know by now though that EA games outside of Steam are not likely at all redeem on Steam.
That's what I figured, but I want to ask just in case. So now the question: is SimCity 4 still worth playing, or would say Tropico 3/4 or some other city building game be a better buy?

I haven't played the Tropico series yet, but I heard great things and it would probably be a lot prettier. I booted up Sim City 4 a few months ago and the mechanics were still fun, but it really did look like crap. Don't know if they have mods for that.

how's the UI? I can deal with outdated graphics, but going back to older and far less user friendly Sims and RollerTycoon games hasn't been the easiest thing to adjust to :headache:
