Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

Can you name one case where owning Steam+Uplay DRM is better than having ONLY Uplay? i am curious to know
Every time a game is available for pre-load on Steam. Uplay doesn't support pre-loading.

Every time the DLC is on discount on Steam. If you bought your game on Uplay/other non-Steam retailer you have to buy your DLC there too.

And this is not a deal considering the game seems to have dropped in price. GS has it for 30 in recent flyer. So 25 is no bargain.
Tony never said what the price will be, he just said that it won't be higher, pre-coupon, from what it is today.

One point I forgot to tell that I spend about 4-5 days to install and play Far Cry 3 in Uplay ( install , failed install , download installer from bittorrent , install game)

but I spend just 1 hour to install Far Cry 3 in Steam and can play without any problem.

When you have around 1000 games having them in one place is very important. A lot of us feel that way.
Why? I have around 1000 games. 900 in Steam, 40 odd in Origin, a dozen in uplay

Origin is better than Steam but greatly lacks its selection of titles unfortunately.

UPlay is crap but if you have to have it, you may as well have it on its own rather than use Steam and still have to use Uplay.

Ah, yes, my old strong reason for wanting games on Steam... DLC. If you have the steam game there are many opportunities for sales on the DLC. Not so many sales opportunities for Uplay DLC.

Because.

I actually like some Rockstar games - Red Dead Redemption was spectacular. As a whole, I think Rockstar is overrated, though.
{pouts @ RDR still NOT having a PC port}

EDIT:

Ugh, imo, gta4 was a horrible pot of video game sludge. I regret blowing ten hours trying to convince myself i wasn't bored with it. The main story missions...not fun either. Always starts out driving with those terrible driving controls that made it feel like I was driving an elephant through a giant bowl of molasses, followed by "shoot this guy with our crappy shooting mechanics."

Blargh, i hated that game.

How the hell it has like a 96 metascore is beyond my comprehension.
I loved GTA4 (base game).

I liked how it was much more realistic for a GTA, when compared to previous GTA's. It was a nice change in direction - especially when SR was starting to get more and more over-the-top and ridiculous w/ each entry in the series!

(SIDE NOTE: SR2 was ridiculous; SR3 was even more ridiculous and insane; and SR4 tries to even out-do SR3 in many different ways).

I think many expected GTA to be as crazy and over-the-top as SA and the world to be bigger than SA - and well, that's just not what they got.

And I loved that from EFLC, BoGT DLC took GTA back to its more fun and crazier GTA roots - which is what many wanted from GTA4 base-game, in the first place.

Regardless - where's my damn PC port of GTA5?

He didn't say that it was worse, just that it was no bargain. Pointing to the price isn't saying anything on one being cheaper than the other, it's pointing out that its value has already dropped considerably. Basically, neither is much of a deal because that's just what it commonly is going around for already.

Wait...so are you saying that buying a game for $25 is a worse deal than buying the same game at $30?

Cheers,

Tony
Just saying 25$ is nothing to celebrate when it looks like a general retail drop is in effect. And 5$ off of a high price game vs 5$ off a low price game does make a difference. I specifically scan the % off info when looking for deals. 20% hardly even gets my attention. I know you've been taking a lot of flak for the lackluster EC deals, sorry to add my 2c's

I'm going to guess that it's Might & Magic X - Legacy. Do I win a prize?
I'd like to deny it, but it's very clearly listed in my recent game activity with the word 'Press' written after it. Well, it's out tomorrow anyway!

Friday better be exciting, it means there's only a week left for a lot of coupons to get spent. Hopefully maybe even some last minute surprises hit the week too.

See, even Ubi prefers Steam+Uplay. ;)
I'd bet Ubi doesn't like Steam taking likely a cut of some of their sales, since their Steam-version's using Steam. ;)

Though, I'd betting Ubi looks at their figures of what they sell on Steam-version vs. what they sell from UPlay-only Version - and just not give a damn too much. Let's face it - Ubi games sell whenever, whenever and whatever; whether it's on consoles (PS3, X360, PS4, XB1) or PC (UPlay or Steam). I'm sure what they sell on the Steam-version is much BETTER numbers than what they'd do on a straight-up UPlay-only version - since many PC gamers do have this "I must own everything on Steam" mentality and "I love Steam" mentality. And I'm sure some people might even at least double-dip, just to have their favorite Ubi game also on Steam.

So are you allowed to post opinions about it yet? If not can you post a review after official release and NDA is over and all that stuff.

Not that I'm going to buy it at full price of course, but I'm curious for when the next time it goes on sale, with Steam and Uplay together both of course because double DRM is how I roll.

No worries, and it has nothing to do with taking flak. We've been at $29.99 for a few days now moving an insane amount of volume. When the price changed to $29.99 a few days ago, I received a few dozen PMs and asks in thread that the EC be applied to it.

These facts make me take comments like "meh, not a great deal" significantly less seriously.

Cheers,

Tony

hmm, but you chose to respond to my lowly comment :)

PC Games should all start at 10$ IMHO :)

I was going to post that the overall increase in sales and revenue from the steam version likely surpasses steam's cut... but you pretty much did that yourself.

So are you allowed to post opinions about it yet? If not can you post a review after official release and NDA is over and all that stuff.

I can nicely sidestep this because in true CAG style its actually kinda backlogged! I'm reviewing another game first and won't have an opinion of it before its release tomorrow anyway.

Quoting in case you missed my question the first time. ;)

It seems to have been more than doubled. That or CAG is having a fit again.

hmm, but you chose to respond to my lowly comment :)

Lol no comments are lowly broheim :) and it was less about your comment and more about me getting a specific request in thread and by CAGs, namely "Hey I noticed AC IV is $29.99, it would be awesome if the EC applied to that", and me running down that very specific request, and then the response being "meh whatever".

Again, not calling anyone out here, just reminding you guys that if you suggest or specify that you'd like something specifically (in this case "please add $29.99 to the EC list"), I'm less likely to run that very specific request down if it turns out it isn't worth your (or my) time.

Cheers,

Tony
