Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]

Depends on the bitrate and song. Some songs change notes and sound completely different at lower bitrates. Just about anyone can hear the difference on any speaker. I haven't encountered many (if any) instances that a 320 kbps vbr MP3 have trouble with.
I was talking about same FLAC/Lossless sound track re-encoded to MP3 even at 320kbps. It is true that the 320kbps MP3 is still very good, but lossless still beats it for me and I can hear the difference.

And you can't because....?

Details would help.
If I want to download and install a game on Steam with a buttload of DLC associated with it, I gotta not only install the base game, but all the DLC as well that's associated with my account, which could be an extra dozen gigabytes worth. If you don't have a huge storage drive, that really messes you up. And if you have a slow internet connection, which i do right now, that could be an extra day or two of waiting before I can play. I wish you could choose which DLC, if any, you want to install with your game. And i wish you could uninstall any DLC you don't desire.

Ah OK, I see what you're saying now. Part of the issue is that some Steam games have DLC included in the base game download and purchases merely unlock that. For some games you could always just delete the DLC files after the download to save HDD space. Though, that doesn't help with slow download speeds.

What the heck does that even mean? lol How could it force you to download DLC you don't own? o_O Wouldn't that be a good thing though?
It means like like I mentioned above. Steam packages some games/DLC together in a single download. Purchases, be it gift, key, whatever simply unlocks that already downloaded content. Games with large DLC like Skyrim/Dragonborn have separate downloads.

It comes with the base game. When you buy the DLC, you unlock what you already have on your computer. Basically you're stuck downloading the DLC and storing the DLC (unless it's a separate file you can delete manually) even though you can't play it.

Sleeping Dogs has several multi-GB DLCs and you have to dl it all even if you didn't buy it. :(
Huh, I didn't think any of them were that large since even the story DLC seemed proportionally small.

Glad to put those great ones disc-less and onto Steam. :D

I really feel for you Railworks Train Simulator aficionados who own all the DLC.

Heyo, not sure yet, I'm actually flying down to Namco tomorrow to talk about a number of things. That is on the list.

Also, GTA IV keys are re-ordered. Going back through the past 20 or so pages now. I'm seeing some excellent MS paint contributions from the weekend.

Cheers,
Tony

Oh average. Yes. This is well studied and well presented in Zwicker's work on psychoacoustics

this is certainly not true that women are better listeners than men. now what did you say, I wasn't listening.

Lack of storage space?

1) Don't bother with SSDs so you can get cheaper and larger regular HDs.

2) Delete some of 'dat porn.

The way I see it, Tony is like a Black Ops guy.  One day, the Namco guys in the US come home.  They are whistling, happy, drunk on not having any Amazon DVG sales for the EC days.  Someone calls.  It's Gamefly.  He stops and answers it.

"Yeah.  Yeah.  Yeah, we totally boned those Amazon guys.  Yeah.  Screw 'em.  Yeah.  Don't worry.  We're only going with you guys.  Ha.  Yeah.  I'll see you at the Club tomorrow.  Yeah.  Later, man, I have to snort some blow off mah woman's belly."  The phone makes a brief chirping sound as it closes.  Walking through his mansion, he's still whistling as he makes his way to the third living room.  Where the games are.

He blinks.  The room's lights are off.  He yells, "Woman!  I told you not to turn off the accent lighting in the gaming room!  Ferchrissake!"  He marches in and clicks on the light.

Hairs on the back of his neck twitch at the first signs of fear.  Sweat gathers along his temples very subtly.  He swallows down the largest lump in his throat.  The end of the barrel of the silenced pistol rubs against the back of his skull, brushing through the toupee he bought with his ill-gotten moneys from non-Amazon DVG deals.  Swallowing, he knows precisely who it is.

"Tony, man.  Hey.  I... I've been meaning to call you."

The barrel presses in behind his head.  It turns faintly and rubs against the flesh under his false hair.

"Tony... uh... Tony, man.  I'm... I understand you're upset.  Maybe... uh... maybe we can work something out... I... I think you have a Editor's Choice thing still going, right?"

In the distance, a microwave carousel begins turning.  A woman calls out, "Honey!  Is that you?  I thought I heard someone come in the front door!"

He stands there, uncertain, but opens his mouth to answer.  The barrel retreats, but the faint click of the hammer of a gun interrupts his near relief.  He swallows and begins to cry.  "Tony, please... please... I want us to be a part of your discounts, man.  I... I just know we can fit in with them!  Let us have games at uh... $6... then you can have your coupons apply!  $6 games with $5 off possible!  C'mon, man!  Please!"

Silence.  Coming closer, a woman calls out, "Honey!  Is that you?  Are you in here again?"  She throws open the door.

He jumps toward her and turns, screaming, "Tony!  Don't do it!  Don't kill h--"  Nothing but empty room.

She blinks and looks between him and the empty space he's yelling at.  She laughs.  "You're such a wuss sometimes.  I don't even know why I'm with you.  Scared of the dark again, aren'tcha?"

"You don't understand," he tells her as he begins combing the room for sign of Tony.  "He was here!"

"Who was here?" she asks, chomping on some gum.

"Tony.  Tony from Amazon."  Wiping his soaked forehead, he turned to her and pulled her away from the room.  "He had a gun!"

"There ain't nobody here.  You've been playing those games again.  I told you they're rotting your brain like my papa always said and now look at you.  Rotten brain and paranoid.  Come on.  Let's get some healthy cocaine in your system to cure all those pesky mental issues you have now..."

"But... but... he's real..."

"Sure, sure... come on..."

Walking into their bedroom, the two stop and scream.  For there, on their plasma HDTV, a digital message is projected.

"Editor's Choice."  Burned into their plasma after hours of sitting there before either could get to their bedroom, the message will never be wiped away by any ridiculous image retention reduction routine.

Both scream.  In the distance, Tony rides away on his motorbike.  Pup in the sidecar.

Some call him a deals man.  Some call him a marketing man.  Some call him The King of Deals.  Some even call him The Awesomest Man in Deals.

How playable are the Thief games for someone who never played them originally and is somewhat interested? Obviously they're dated, but are we talking 'dated and still fun' or more 'dated and awesome for their time, but not fun now'

if she did i wish she get that sorry i dont like my oldeeer sister no respect for her sadly it where i really dont respect her or anything if she eaten by zombie or anything i proly be not sad more happpy. rest of family i would be sad
If your sister became a zomebie, what would be the best way to deal with her?

Is that number magical? It's a very tempting number and I do like it better than $5.35. I don't feel very stubborn today though.

Edited: Actually my math says BNW is $5.62 unless I am using the wrong coupon. The only one I can find gives 25% off.
GMG had Civ5 Gods & KIngs for $3.15 December 2012.

When I had a Mac I used XLD, which was really nice. Now that I'm back to Windows for everything I'm using Foobar2000 to convert. It works very well
--there are plugins for handling APE and such natively, it does metadata lookup through a couple of services, and it's very fast and minimal. The only complaint is that it won't automatically fetch artwork for you. I don't remember the specific quality, but I believe it's also around 160kbps with true VBR. My hearing actually isn't very good and I'm sure this is actually higher than I need, but...maybe one day in the future they'll come up with a fix and this way I won't need to re-encode everything. :)

Foobar has a plugin for ABX. Really if you care about audio you need to do ABX testing. It's pretty simple; you just give it two audio samples, one lossless and one lossy, and then it gives you a blind listening test using those samples to see if you can actually tell the difference between them. You test however many times (I think I did ten) going back and forth between the clips. If you can hear differences you'll be able to identify consistently which is the lossy and which is the lossless, in which case you should increase the quality of the lossy. If you can't tell the difference, the lossy's quality is, subjectively for you, as good as lossless. Keep in mind that equipment can have an impact, however; listening to crappy earbuds probably isn't going to help you pick out quality issues.
Both are really good. +1 for AB testing. Also the term you want is "transparent" (meaning you can't tell if it's compressed or lossless).

160k? That's beneath me. I demand minimum V0 for Lame or 256k for AAC.
MP3 has a shitty transient due to its hybrid PQMF/MDCT filterbank. While there is improvement above 192/224... people who encode 320 Kbps MP3s should be drawn and quartered.

256 Kbps AAC is pretty good but the transient still isn't right. I was citing 160 kbps for walk-around ipod style listening/car audio.

Eh. What 256k are you talking about? Apple for example (unless this has changed) uses constrained VBR, not true VBR. Also the encoder quality makes a difference. But yeah, as I said...my hearing isn't that great, so even with decent headphones it doesn't sound any different at 160k to me. When I used to listen to mp3s at the old standard of 128k, yeah, I could tell the difference there, but AAC is a lot better IMO.

I'm hoping it comes back because at this point I'm suspecting we won't see a complete LA Noire. :(

The reason I insist on lossless is because I know I'm going to re-encode it to AAC using the settings I've found that work for me. Obviously I don't want to download one lossy format and convert it to another lossy format. That's madness. :)
Lossy -> Lossy only gets worse. Owning lossless lets you re-encode to whatever you need cleanly. Also nowdays storage isn't at such a premium... I've had 96 GB on my four year old phone for over a year. My rockbox'd Sansa Clip+ also had a 64 GB microSD jammed into it.

Far Cry 3 is $5.60 from Gamefly as well with coupon code GFDJAN25 for those previously lamenting it not being on Amazon sale.

Ubisoft, not Steam/Ubi. Get over it :shame:
No. It's on steam. I want it on steam.

So, if I've got this right so far, Tony is going for one last hail mary of a deal. According to reddit, he's getting on a plane to go meet the assholes who make Pac Man to see if he can put together a Namco deal or something. They couldn't just email or video chat with him?
Ever seen a man's testicles crushed by a desk drawer over videoconference? Intimidation is a lot easier in person.

Tony challenged the head CEO of Namco to a Pac-Man Championship DX tourney, If he wins he will come back with some killer deals or if he loses well lets just say he will be walking bull legged for awail. :) go Tony
You do realize that multiple perfect games of PuckMan have already been played?

I can piss so far that I can play different qualities of music through $1 headphones, put in a set of earplugs, put another set of over the ear protection, and tell which is better just by feeling the music pass through my soul.
>.> I've jammed to my ATH-ANC7's with 33 dB earplugs on due to being on aircraft 16 hours a day for days on end.

Tony is visiting namco personally and bringing back some good deals, or else apparently some baby seals are going to be entering a world of pain
Fur is murder... Fashionable Warm Murder.

What the heck does that even mean? lol How could it force you to download DLC you don't own? o_O Wouldn't that be a good thing though?
Devs don't want to maintain multiple damn versions/configurations... everyone runs the same build... DLC keys only unlock the content.
