My guess is that it's a card that got damaged somehow, whether due to water damage, a knife, got a bit crumpled, whatever. The code is likely unused, but the card itself is in such shape that it couldn't be sold as new? That's about the only thing I can come up with. It's either that or the seller is a complete prick.
