Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

you should also watch rokka no yusha, n Jitsu wa Watashi wa( since it is a rom com), dandelion
I watched "Actually I am..." already. It was good but then again I'm a sucker for supernatural rom/coms. Haven't seen the other two yet.

Charlotte has me hooked. Again, I'm a sucker for these supernatural rom/coms. The MC is such an unlikeable asshat but I'm curious to see how he develops.

Gangsta was great. Nic is probably one of the most badass characters I've seen in a long time. And it's great to watch something a little more "adult" amongst the abundance of middle school targeted anime.

Overlord seems to be this season's flavor of being "Trapped in a video game." But I like the twist of Momonga having the appearance of a villain but actually an honest, good person at heart.

Prison School was all kinds of fucked up, but I loved it. This is going to be a guilty pleasure that I have to wait for the misses to go to bed before watching. (nose bleeding)

Snow White with the Red Hair was okay. It reminds me of Erin (which I loved) so I'll stick with it.

SHIMONETA was not to my liking. It's so contrived to be fanservice that it seems to be written by 14 year olds for 14 year olds. Dropped it.

i cannot stand the sister in charolotte.

i thought prison school is pretty tame due to the censoring, and some stuff.

overlord is good, but some is off with the animation

i am surprised you only thought snow white with red hair was just okay. it seemed like an anime right up your alley

i thought shimoneta ok, i am only watching it what kind of crazy thing it is going to show.

here are some anime you might also like

This year's Gundam series has been revealed: Iron-Blooded Orphans.

EDIT: Plot synopsis from TV Tropes:

It is the year 323 of the Post-Disaster Era. Mars has been colonized, but it has been yearning for freedom from Earth. In this world, a young orphan named Mikazuki Augus, working as a contractor for the private security group CGS, was entrusted with the security of a Martian princess named Cuderia Aina Bernstein, who was planning for her nation of Chryse to secede from Earth. On their way, however, they were attacked by a terrorist group called the Gyaralhorn, who wanted to stop Martian independence from Earth. What is worse CGS had gone rogue against the government that employs them after they were given a bungled deal, and Orga Itsuka is planning a rebellion of his own against the adults who oppressed them. Now, Mikazuki is forced a choice between following his friend, or following his mission.

Haven't seen it yet. Maybe I'll give it a look see tonight.

Watched Gundam War in the Pocket after I heard a couple people really hyping it up. Not bad, but not as good as I thought it was going to be. The opening fight scene was amazing and thought I was going to get more of that. But no, just Al running around getting angry at everyone. I guess I was expecting deeper characters and story but it was all pretty simple. With that said I liked it. Probably something I would've really liked when I was younger since it seems like a story for a younger audience.

And watched a couple movies too. DBZ Battle of the Gods & Berserk Golden Age Arc III. Also had the opportunity to watch DBZ Resurrection F but I'm holding off until I can hear the English dub.

Yea, Al in 0080 annoyed the hell out of me. Had the series been about Bernie and Christina I would have liked it a lot more.

Yea it did. I'm hoping it gets a little more serious, but I think at the very least we'll get more depth into the psychological stuff.

Sorry, couldn't stomach School Live. I'm already watching Non Non Biyori and that's about all the young girl slice of life I can handle right now.

I started watching Rosario + Vampire. Harem at it's mightiest. The show wastes no time. Already 4 episodes in and his stable is at 3. The 14 year old in me will keep watching while adult me rolls his eyes every 10 seconds. It's such a poorly written and predictable show, yet I'm compelled to watch. Calk it up as another guilty pleasure. And wtf with the panty shots?

Rosario+Vampire is just a terrible show. The writing sucks, and the characters are shitty archetypes with no quirks to them. It's a shitty version of Monster Musume. That show is just a fanservice fest, but it has solid comedy, and it's not prudish when it comes to sex like all those other shitty harems are.

Just thought I'd share that Rsusuke Chayama, the artist who did character designs for Time of Eve and Patema Inverted, launched a Patreon campaign recently. I really enjoyed the art style of Time of Eve and look forward to what he can pump out when he has full creative control over what he does. Patreon campaign: https://www.patreon.com/chayama?ty=h

As for anime I've watched recently I started re-watching Welcome to the NHK. The middle part of the show started dragging a bit and I questioned why I enjoyed it so much the first time around, but that feeling didn't last long. I'm back to enjoying the show quite a bit, and I'm at about episode 19.

If you've never seen Welcome to the NHK then you should definitely consider checking it out.

I have a question. What is it called when Anime characters are a childlike version of themselves? Like a kids or mini/cute version of a character? Back in the day we called them "super deformed", but I am sure there is a better word for them now or a Japanese word for them?

EDIT: NVM. "Chibi".

Wikipedia is actually useful.

You already found out, but yea, it's chibi. Super deformed, a.k.a. SD is still used.

I thought the last half of Welcome to the NHK was clumsy and rushed. The animation also got horrendously bad in that last half. Didn't like the handling of Misaki's character either(Gonzo should've went with the better written manga version of her).

A couple more episodes in and I'm realizing this now. Probably one of the laziest written shows I've ever seen. I do get a little enjoyment out of Moka & Aono's relationship. But I know deep down it's not going anywhere.

the manga is better

Angelic Layer's manga SUUUUUUCKS. Like, I was so disgusted by it after watching the anime I almost threw the book across the room. Only reason I didn't was because I was in a library when I read it.

Cardcaptor Sakura's manga is actually decent, though the anime is way better.

Rosario + Vampire is a great manga, terrible anime. The manga starts off similar to the anime with more action, but after a volume or two quickly turns extremely dark and is now an action manga with fanservice thrown in.

It also has pretty heavy art evolution. This is main character Tsukune from Volume 1:

This is the SAME CHARACTER by the time Season II starts:

I saw a few imagines of Rosario+Vampire manga. Looks way better than the anime. Also caught up with "Actually I Am" (Jitsu wa Watashi wa). It's a obvious copy of Rosario+Vampire with reversed roles. I'm not a big fan of the art, but it's been okay.

Tried watching the dub of the Mobile Suit Gundam movie. That is a terrible dub. I got about 15 minutes in, couldn't handle it. I was really hoping it would have the voices from the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games. And every time I heard Amuro call it a GunDAMN I cringed. Subtitles it is I guess.

The Mobile Suit Gundam movie was dubbed a while before the Canadians started dubbing the Gundam franchise. I remember seeing the tapes next to the Gundam Wing at Suncoast when I was a kid. I didn't pick those up since they were pricier.

It's a shame Bandai America didn't rerecord the Gundam trilogy with the voice actors in the Gundam 0079 series they were showing on Cartoon Network. I'm really used to Brad Swaile as Amuro.

A shame they didn't re-dud the movie with the newer voices. I really liked the v/o in the Dynasty Warriors games and Char's Counterattack. I guess I'm just used to them. I'd prefer to just watch the movies instead of going through the entire series since I already know the story inside out.

I was watching My Little Pony with my daughter (dont worry, I'm no Brony) and I noticed one of the voices as Amuro. It's one of those times when you're like "I know that voice." Took me a good 10 minutes but I figured it out without running to the internet.

Caught up with Monster Masume. Crazy amount of fan service but it's got more going on than similar shows like "Actually I Am" and Rosario+Vampire.

Hey guys, been a while since I posted here o_O. Wanted to ask you guys and share my thoughts on what I think of the current season and such. Just got the funimation sub in addition to the crunchyroll sub, so now I can watch just about everything!

But, regardless, this is what I've been watching so far this season along with some thoughts, and my score so far.

Continued/Leftover from last season

(9/10) Ace of Diamond S2 - Same old, same old for this one. More or less the same from season one until now. Started off very slow with the recap episodes but hit its' stride once it hit the new content. One of my most anticipated shows going from week to week!

(7.5/10) Food Wars - Food porn, food porn, food porn.......and a little bit of ecchi? So far so good on this one. Read the manga up to chapter 115 or such, and so far it's a pretty good adaption.

(7.5/10) My Love Story -  I'm so used to watching the exact opposite of this type of show (Romance/SoL) that this show breaths in a badly needed breath of fresh air.  It's a very god rom/com, and (I think) the show is pretty funny.

New this season

(7/10)Actually, I Am - This show's style says it should have come out about 8, 9 years ago. But, I actually enjoy that fact, the style suits this show well. It is another romcom, but with vampires, aliens and much more. Very funny, will keep on watching unless it get's heavy on the ecchi in the future.

(7.5/10) Charlotte -  Angel Beats director? Check. Pa Works AND Key!? DOuble Check!!  Aniplex of America.......meh.... But regardless, was very hyped for this show, and have not been let down yet.

(9//10) Gangsta  - This one far and away gets my favorite new show of the season so far. I was yearning a good seinen/action show lately, and this show fills that whole. Highly recommended if you enjoyed Black Lagoon.

(4/10) Monster Musume - Wanted to see what all the hubbub was about with this show since I have seen a lot of people talk about it. Summed up, basically another harem, but with monster girls. I can see the appeal, but quite honestly not my type of show. Probably will drop.

(8/10) Overlord - Here is your annual SAO/Log Horizon type of show about getting trapped in a game world. But, this show throws in a special twist where the character is already all powerful, and get's thrown into a world he know's almost nothing about. I can't wait to watch more of this show, and it's my second favorite so far this season.

(4.5/10) Prison School - I did know what to expect going into this, and after watching a few episodes, despite it being very funny (Especially Takehito Morokuzu's character), this show is a bit overwhelming me with how far it goes. Will probably watch another couple of episodes, but most likely am going to drop it.

(6.5/10) Shimoneta (Excessively Long Title) - Just wanted to watch this show, despite it being the type of show I usually watch, because it sounds so over the top. Almost exactly what I expected so far, and that's not a bad thing. I am enjoying this just for how ridiculous this is.

(7/10) Working!!! S3 - Same as the previous two seasons. A comedy/Sol (with just a tiny romance kicked in) about life working in a restaurant and their interactions. A nice change of pace from other shows this season, but would recommend watching the other two seasons first.

Plan to watch later on

Just don't have time to watch any of these yet, so am gonna wait until they finish to touch these.

Arslan Senki

Durarara!!!x2 Ten

Gatchaman Crowds: Insght

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers

Snow White With the Red Hair

Ushio To Tora

What do you guys think so far of the current season?

Haven't watched a single thing.

Anyway, I'm here at Otakon. Here's what I've done so far.

8am - Arrive downtown.
9am - 18+ Wristband registration is closed until 4pm for some reason. Had salad for breakfast.
9:30 am - Nothing interested me panel or video wise, so I got in line for Dealer's Room.
12:30pm - Got into Dealer's Room
1pm - Exited Dealer's Room (got 4 Gunpla, Tiger & Bunny Movie 2, Sailor Moon shirt, 3 Shark Robot shirts, bunch of free stuff, including 2 extra bags)
2pm - Viz Panel.

Very eventful Friday to start the con. :p

Any good vampire anime?

I really liked dance in the vampire bund and blood +. Disliked trinity blood.

As stated earlier, Rosario+Vampire is an excellent manga, though the anime version is crap.

No idea if it's actually good, but Vampire Knight is one of Viz's most popular titles.

Blood Lad is quite a quirky comedy action series.

Have not seen it, but a lot of people love Shiki.

Black Blood Brothers is OK at best, but it is insanely cheap to get.

Vampire Hunter Miyu is one of the more classic titles, though the dub quality has not aged well.

And, of course, there's Hellsing.

Vampire Princess Miyu (I assume what you meant) is really dated. I liked it when I saw it in the 90s, but it's about as bad as other 90s anime.

Vampire Knight's manga is ok, at least what I read of it. But I didn't watch the anime, and don't know anything about Guilty. It is a shoujo title though.

Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase you might like since you liked Dance in the Vampire Bund.

Strike the Blood I personally liked, but a lot of people didn't.
I'll admit there's not fear for the main character cause he's pretty much invincible without trying.

You must have the same taste in anime as me because your list is identical to mine. I'm watching every show you are. Here's my take on what's going on this season.

Returning from Last Season

Ace of Diamond [6.5/10] - The pacing makes this one a little boring. As you said it started off slow. And I hate the MC. Eijun is an annoying prick. He reminds me of Sakuragi from Slam Dunk, I hated him too. But it's the only sports anime I'm watching now since Kuroko ended. So I'm sticking with it. It might sound like a lot of hate but I do enjoy the dramatic side of high school baseball.

Food Wars [8.5/10] - I love this one. Probably because I watch a lot of cooking shows. It's like Iron Chef meets anime. Soma is awesome as a MC. Great cast, funny, ecchi, even a little educational. Big thumbs up for this one.

My Love Story [9.0/10] - It's great to watch a rom/com without all the bumbling misunderstandings and to have an actual couple. Takeo & Yamato are really cute together. It's nice shake up your typical high school romance while still keeping it clean. And Takeo is the fucking man.

New Stuff

Actually I Am [4.0/10] - Not feeling this one. It's got funny moments but overall I just find it boring as a typical harem. Not a fan of the art style either. Thinking about dropping this one.

Charlotte [7.5/10] - It's another high school club based on helping people. In that sense once you get past the first episode it's going to be a case by case thing, which is good. Kinda like Medaka Box and Sket Club. I really like the idea of these imperfect skills.

Gangsta [9.5/10] - This show is awesome. Best show of the season by far. Finally watching an anime geared for adults and not for middle school kids. Plus the op is the best op of this season. If you're not watching this do yourself a favor and get on board. Nic is one of the most badass characters ever. Every time he's on screen you want to see what he has to say or do.

Monster Masume [6.5/10] - It's another harem, with monsters. But I like this one more than "Actually I Am" because it's not high school shit. I like it when anime deals with adults rather than children. Fan service crazy. I just don't know how MC would have sex with a snake or a horse? Is the hole in the normal spot or different since they're monster girls......

Overlord [8/10] - This seasons flavor of trapped in a video game anime. I like the twist of the MC being the villain but not really being a villain. Looking forward to this one since Log Horizon and SAO both sucked a couple seasons back.

Prison School [7.5/10] - This is a guilty pleasure. I know it's smut but I like it. My favorite character is the principle being a dirty old man himself. The peeing episode had me in both shock and disgust. WTF... Have to wait for the wife to go to bed to watch this one.

Shimoneta [5/10] - I'm only bumping it up to a 5 because of the last episode when Anna gets a little.... wet. I just have a hard time believing a world were people are ignorant to sex. It just seems way to contrived just to pull off a couple dirty jokes. This really is for middle school kids. I'll watch more but I may drop it.

Working!!! [7.5/10] - This one got really good with episode 3. I was concerned this season was going to be another stagnant season and not resolve anything. But that wasn't the case. I hope it keeps going in this progressive direction.

Ushio to Tora [7/10] - This is 90's anime in all it's glory. Simple story, fun show. lots of action. I love it.

Non Non Biyori repeat [6/10] - Only saw the first episode. It's cute and I liked the first season. This one is on my back burner when I have nothing else to watch.

Yep, Gangsta is the AOTS

I like this season. It has some good stuff. Working!!!, Ushio & Tora, Monster Masume, Charlotte, Non Non Byori Repeat, Overlord, Prison School. There's quite a bit I looked forward to every week. Not to mention the returning shows like Food Wars & My Love Story. Both are top notch.

Also One Piece picked up the pace finally.

I've been watching Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers and am finding it enjoyable. I usually only have time for one or two shows each season, and I'm quite happy with this one.

EDIT: This is the reason I shouldn't post from my phone.

If you mean similar as in the same kind of show, Lain makes it pretty tough. Perhaps you're looking for things like Boogiepop Phantom, Berserk, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex as shows that first became popular around that time.

Also, my first recommendation to people looking for something different or unique is usually Planetes.

I second Planetes wholeheartedly. It's a crime against humanity that it hasn't been licensed rescued yet.

However, Boogiepop Phantom is garbage. Don't bother.

shows that remind me of death note due to the same crazy battle of wits stuff.

One Outs

No Game No Life (ecchi warning, not horrible amounts of ecchi but still plenty of ecchi)

maybe Code Geass.

I won't argue against your opinion on the show.

However, I want to point out that out of the handful of shows that I mentioned, Boogiepop Phantom is the most like Lain out of all of them. It's a dark, atmospheric, and oftentimes surrealistic series with some science fiction (at least fiction at the time) elements involved. If I see BP mentioned somewhere, usually Lain is mentioned as well. Like I said before, finding shows "similar to Lain" is not a simple task. I think it would be difficult to find a show that has a more similar "feel" to the environment found in Lain than BP does.
