Anime marathon in January?

Ok, I'm sure with all the anime fans we seem to have here someone will know this.. but I remember reading a few weeks ago about one of the cable channels running a bunch of anime movies in January (I remember Princess Mononoke was in the list)... and since I've had minor experience in the genre I thought I'd try to watch some of them... but does anyone happen to know the channel/any details?

If anyone's really adventurous and wants to tell me which of the movies being shown are worth watching, I'd be quite appreciative.

edit - Ok, I finally found something on Google, its TCM that's running it, and the movies are Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday and Pom Poko. So, which of these are good?

http://superrob.blogspot.com/2005/12/tcm-honors-renowned-japanese-animator.html if anyone is interested.

All of the movies you listed are Miyazaki films. This in and of itself is not a bad thing, it just means you aren't going to get a very diverse look into anime from that marathon.

Miyazaki's works are good, with heavy moralistic/fantasy elements. They'd be right at home with the original takes of old classics like Cinderella, and the works of Ronald Dahl.

Oh yeah... Pom Poko is about Tanuki. Tanuki, traditionally, have massive testicicles. So, expect some bizzare cultural scrotum jokes in there. ;)

To quote one reviewer: it has a "truly baffling amount of scrotums."

Considering we have our own cheapass tanuki, big scrotums shouldn't be a big shocker.

Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite films of all time, and that's no easy feat. Miyazaki is like the Miyamoto of the animé world, and you should give all those films a try if you can.

I'm not sure if Whisper of the Heart and Only yesterday are Miyazaki flims or not (I've never heard of an association between the two), but the rest are and they're all at least pretty good in my opinion. I can't help but think that Pom Poko will be censored for the reason that jmcc mentioned, but it's not like they're huge in the movie.

The one thing that worries me is that they have the English voice actors listed on their site's schedule. One could argue that this is the way the films were shown in their original American runs, though. Still, if it goes through, it'd probably be the first time TCM has compromised their ethos, at least as far as I know.

Whisper of the Heart isn't a Miyazaki-directed film, but it is a Ghibli title. Miyazaki may have produced it or something, I'm not quite sure. Warner recently announced that and a 2-disc edition of Totoro for early next year, hopefully to be released alongside Howl's Moving Castle.

And, to the OP, don't miss these great films on TCM. Miyazaki is easily the greatest animator working today, and probably only second to the golden age of Disney in the grand scheme of things.

Then I shall giggle with glee when the movie comes on. I just wish they weren't waiting until the end of the month to show it. :whistle2:( :) I'll check out the other two that I haven't seen, but I'm more looking forward to the others since I haven't seen English dubs for all of them, not even Pom Poko. :whistle2:(

According to the site I found, TCM will play the English version, followed by the original Japanese version. So I assume they realize playing only the foreign language would make it somewhat inaccessible for most people, and by doing both they can please the purists.

Where are Disney's fucking hands in the pie on Totoro? I know Miyazaki signed that contract where they'd get distribution I only hope this means that Warner Brothers has exclusive rights to Totoro now and that Disney sold it to em'. I prefer not to support those world takerovers when possible even though I admit I watch the channel. I would hate to see how Porn would be treated if they took the world over, I'm reminded of the Simpsons Surly Duff bit.
I have to say this is why I fucking LOVE TCM, I only wish there was a TCM-HD channel because of shit like this, now if only they would start airing Osamu Tetsuka Anime as well.

I read it and re-read it and finally looked at my original post. Sorry for the confusion, I got Disney and Warner mixed up. It's actually Disney releasing Totoro, Whisper and Howl next year. Like you said, Miyazaki has a contract, so it only makes sense that it would still be Disney and not Warner.

Sorry again about my mistake. Just more proof that you shouldn't believe anything on the internet. ;)

I was going to bump this thread myself, but I got caught up watching Spirited Away.

8 p.m. Spirited Away
10:15 p.m. Princess Mononoke

Thursday, Jan. 12
8 p.m. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
10 p.m. Castle in the Sky

Thursday, Jan. 19
8 p.m. My Neighbor Totoro
9:30 p.m. Porco Rosso
11:15 p.m. Whisper of the Heart

Thursday, Jan. 26
8 p.m. Only Yesterday
10:15 p.m. Pom Poko

Those are the times for the english dub versions of each movie. The original japanese versions follow immediately after.

Dammit I can't believe I forgot to watch this today. I was looking forward to seeing Spirited Away and I missed it. I can't even stay up for Princess Mononoke because of work tomorrow. Its times like this when I'm tempted to quit and go leech off the government.

As a reminder to everyone, the english dub showings of Totoro and Whisper of the Heart are US PREMIERS. The DVDs for these do not come out in the US until March. I for one am anxious to see how Disney did with the Totoro dub as the old Troma dub was perfection.

And Cornfedwb, they are all worth watching.
Does anybody know if the movies will be presented in Widescreen?
If I remember correctly, the ones on last night were in widescreen, so the rest should be in widescreen.

Aww... Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were the ones I most wanted to see. I've seen them before, but I wanted to record them. Damn.

Ok after seeing last weeks and this weeks films i am officially cemented in the Miyazaki army. These films are just amazing. I cant go any further than that. Until last week the only films of his i've seen were Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service. I really need to get these films. They are some of the greatest animated movies evar.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm hoping that when Howl's Moving Castle comes out on DVD in March, they'll have some deals on the other Miyazaki movies as well.
