Sometime this summer, my high school/college friends and I will be going on a trip. Last summer, we went to Warren Dunes in Michigan and last winter we went to the Dells area in Wisconsin. While we were at Warren Dunes, we mainly stayed on the beach for two days.

Now, it's getting kind of difficult to find somewhere to go. It must be close to us (Illinois) and I think we've decided on Michigan again. (Our winter trip will be a big one; Mexico.) So, I was hoping somebody could show me a great place to go. We aren't looking to spend a lot of money, so the cheaper the better! We'd be staying there for 2-4 days. Any suggestions/prices/links would be great!

EDIT: Oh, and almost all of us are under 21, so a bar scene or whatever would be out. We're all college students though.

We go to Traverse City a lot, in fact, we're going next month. Why go to Michigan Adventure when you can go to Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio?

Well, I suppose we'd be looking closer to Illinois, but if there's something great on the other side of Michigan, we'd head to it.

What kind of stuff do they have at both places?

Other states aren't out of the question, but it's been so difficult to get everyone to decide on a place and time. Myself and one other person have to do nearly all the work. I figured it'd be easy enough to bring it to CAG! :)

Traverse City has a beach and such might be a bit far though its near the top of the state.

If you haven't been to Cedar Point I definitely recomend it.

Rig,

What do you do when up there? I am going to send you a pm of a few places... Theres one that I have found to be just great.

Also in my opinion skip michigan adventure. If you would choose between the two cedar point is 10 times better. Also if you have been to cedar point then michigan adventure is more like a little kids park.

Forget the PM heres what I would recomend. Blue Lake Resort. The cabins are nice and secluded on a small crystal clean private lake. You get a boat with the rental and fishing is pretty good. You also get a fire pit and grill. You are probably 20-25 minutes from Ludington Beach where there is a pier, lots of public and more secluded beach area, tons of shops, a boardwalk, and restaurants, mini golf etc. Obviously girls are there.

If you get bored in 2 days at the beach you can head to Manistee and go to their casino, which in my opinion pays better than the Detroit or Mt Pleasant Casino (soaring Eagle).

Heres a few pics and their website:

If you want a different cabin let me know I grew up going up north for the past 20+ years.

even though it's already been mentioned, i've heard traverse city is nice. i haven't ever been up there, but i know my parents would go fairly often when they were still in michigan.

and yeah, if amusement parks are your thing, go to cedar point.

I am not trying to knock it at all. The problem with Traverse city is its becoming a tourist spot kind of like the Mackinaw Bridge... And therefore the prices are going up.. On top of that the further north you go the colder it can get and the longer it takes for the water to heat up.

Secondly due to the price you will traditionally find that the older peple go to Traverse city as they can afford it... thus leaving out the younger crowd to some degree.

Lake Michigan is an awesome lake so if you went further down to Ludington or Further up to Traverse city either way you are going ot have nice clean water.

Any choice you make Rig I would suggest staying outside the lakeside city (i.e. Traverse, Ludington) and go just outside maybe 15-20 minutes. You can get much more for the money.

I think a lot of it depends on what you are looking for - golf, fishing, canoeing, sunbathing, casinos, or something else. My high school buddies and I went to Traverse City for the Cherry Festival every year we were in college and for a few years after - good times and lots of college age people. One year, I had roommates from Ludington and heard a lot of nice things about it - the salmon fishing is very good if you are there are the right time. There are lots of other nice little vacation towns like Saugatuck and Cadillac too.

Wow, that place sounds great. As for what we've done in the past, we went to Warren Dunes and for two days basically played around on the beach and stayed in a run-of-the-mill hotel. It wasn't anything fancy, but it was cheap, and it got the job done. Last winter, we spent quite a bit more on a fancy hotel, and we took tours and visited water parks and such in the Dells area. It was a lot more expensive then the Warren Dunes trip.

Everyone in our group loves the beach, loves fishing/boating and nice cabins, so that place might definitely be a good place for us. Thanks!

EDIT: If I didn't mention it above, there will probably be 10-20 of us going, depending on how well we can get everyone's schedules to match.

Cool,

I think they are in the $55 dollar price range a night on 2 bedroom cabins... Sometimes they will say they only rent for a week at a time but thats not true. As the week you want to go up approaches if they dont fill the cabin then they will rent it for a shorter period.

If those dont work there are other cabins in the area. If you need numbers let me know I have a few alternate places as my Grandparents used to own a cabin near ludington and then further up near petosky.

I think I have a few better pictures of the lake if you pm me your email i can send a few out.

Good luck.

How's about Michigan City, Indiana? They've got some awesome sand dunes over there. It's on the northwestern most tip of the state close to the Illinois border.

I live in Michigan and wouldnt reccomend it. You really want to visit a place with Michigan in the title hit the casino city of Michigan City Indiana

last summer, me and my buddies went on a roadtrip through michigan. for the most part we stuck close to the lake shore, doing some fishing, swimming, meeting ladies, blazing, and we would just camp right near the beach. the national parks along lake michigan are pretty sweet, and camping is a good time in it self. plus it was pretty cheap. we did go through to the lake erie side, which was complete garbage thanks to zebra mussels. we were in the cedar point area, it looked like a sweet place but we wanted to keep the trip cheap, and it was a fucking sweet trip.

Hey Rig, if you have to travel through Roseville, get your buddies to walk around shouting for a girl named 'Ashley Bailey'. It's a guy who pretends to be a sweet innocent girl and asks to 'visit' young boys over the internet. I had the unfortunate chance of e-friending this creep until I cracked his computer and found some damned ugly pictures that would put Dragonlordfrodo to shame.

If you're in for a tourist-y trap kind of place you could always go to Hell, MI. I hear they are having one heck of a party this Tuesday.;)

Disclaimer: I've never actually been to Hell, there was just an article in the paper on it this morning. Please don't take this post too seriously.

fucking zebra mussels... they're all fuckin with our lake (near Coldwater). Ah well.

Boyne Mountain looks nice, I'll be there in August for my buddy's bachelor party, but it's probably too pricey for a short trip.

Nothing is better than the UP for a nice relaxing vacation. Drive around, check out the waterfalls and scenery, etc. And if you like casinos the UP ones certainly pay way better than Soaring Eagle (I live 15 min from the Casino there and rarely go).

If you don't like nature and just want to party, a more urban area is recommended IMO

Rig, what type of trip do you want?

Nature, camping, boating, etc?
Shopping, Museums, etc?

Any concerns as to travel distance?

Something most people won't suggest that you might find interesting is to book a couple rooms at the Ren-Cen Marriot in Downtown Detroit, go to a Tiger's game, spend a night in Greektown, hit Windsor for a day/night, and maybe hit a couple places in Macomb/Oakland counties.
