Anyone familiar with the Atari 600XL?

I recently was given a "broken" Atari 600XL from my girlfriend's dad and I've been trying to mess around with it to get it to work. I've tried taking it apart and I really can't tell if there is something wrong inside or not. The problem it has is that once you turn it on the screen will flash for a second and then go back to how it was, and I've noticed that the power indicator starts of bright and then fades, so I don't think the problem is the TV connection. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be or should I just give up and move on?

The first place I'd check is www.atariage.com

It's essentially the same machine as the 800XL but with only 16K of RAM. It was almost non-existent in North America and mainly sold in more cost sensitive regions.
