Anyone feel like building me a wicked cheap computer?

I just found out that my current computer sucks so I need a new one. I'm going to be using it as a MAME computer only so I'd like to keep the entire thing under $200. It doesn't have to be current or super fast but I need at least 512 MB RAM, I think. I do not need a monitor, speakers, keyboard or mouse. Do your best!

Thanks!

Edit: Oops, just saw the under $200 requirement and only for MAME.

Xbox 1 can run MAME, can't it? Those are well under $200, like $99. ;)

I was curious if I could build a computer for that price and this is what I found from newegg.

$25.99
Rosewill R103A Black SGCC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 350W Power Supply - Retail

$42.99
MSI K8MM3-V Socket 754 VIA K8M800 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

$46.99 before $15 mail in rebate
SAPPHIRE 100562L-GN Radeon 9600PRO 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

$26.99
CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory Model VS512MB400 - Retail

$29.99
AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Palermo 1.8GHz Socket 754 Processor Model SDA3000BXBOX - Retail

That comes out to $199 before shipping, if you buy two sticks of ram. That's probably more than you need for mame, but it is nice to have a little more power. I didn't include hard drive or optical drives since you could probably take those from your older computer.

Awesome! So all of this stuff will talk to each other? For $200 I'm just going to go for it I think.
You just need a hard drive.
I can reuse the 30GB one I have, I think - they are all universally compatible, right?

Also, does the motherboard/video card support iRotate? It's some program that allows Windows to be displayed vertically or something... My problem now is that my old Intel motherboard does not support a 4:5 video output for MAME no matter what settings I choose. I have a Dell 197Esomething monitor...

nice, building a computer is easier than many think...you can get a PC up and running within an hour nowadays.

Second video card has more onboard memory. This build is much faster than the one seveal posts up. It has dual core and the video card is faster. Plus has DDR2 system memory and a PCIX16 slot.

Enjoy

Sweet! Thanks! When I add the motherboard to my cart it asks if I want to order a processor with it for a discount. What do you think of this one (for $8 off)?

Anyone else have any thoughts? The second build posted is a little more than I was hoping to spend but I guess it's not that big of a deal...

I've replaced everything on a computer before except for the motherboard and processor, but those are the two things I'm most worried about.

One question I do have is what about the O/S? All of the O/S that I have now (XP) is installed with the comp (from CC or Best Buy or whatever) so I don't have a stand alone version.

If I buy a copy of Windows XP, it is usable for other systems in my household as well (if I decide to add another comp later down the line)? I mainly want to use this comp for MAME as well but I'm not sure what would be the best way to go about in adding an O/S.

Thanks!

You can generally use XP on up to two computers in one house. You might have to call to get the activation key but they won't give you any problems.
Or you could DL a copy with a key.

OK, if I want to add a wicked cheap hard drive to the build above can I use THIS ONE?

The total for everything including the HDD I selected is $288.30.

THANKS!!

Why not bump it from 40GB to 160GB for $12 more to put your total right at $300? (you'd want to double check to make sure that is the correct HDD, though) But like you said, if this is just for MAME, maybe 40GB is enough.

Keep us posted with how it goes because I'll probably follow suit. Good luck!

for a hard drive, i would check frys.com. they recently had a 320gb maxtor sata hdd for $60 (retail kit), and the 250gb usually go for $50 when they're on sale.

if you really just need a basic computer, i think the best deal right for one right now is at circuit city b&m. they have a deal on an acer t180 (athlon 64 3500+, 512mb ram, 160gb hdd, dual layer dvd burner, media card reader, vista home basic, am2 mobo so you can upgrade to amd 64 x2 when the prices drop later this month, and there's an open pci-express slot since you'll probably want to upgrade the video card over the 6100gs intergrated graphics). you can get it for $180 (which kills any deals for buying all the components separtely). it's in their sunday ad for $400 with a 19" lcd monitor. return the monitor to the store and you'll get a refund for $220, making the desktop $180+tax. there's huge threads about this deal on fatwallet and slickdeals. i've bought 2 in the last week, and my friend bought one. just toss in more ram and a pci-e video card, and you have a computer that's more than adequate for a basic setup.

Thanks. I subbed out the HD - I'm now at $290... not too bad I guess.

That CC deal sounds pretty good... maybe I'll swing by and see if they have any left today... except I really don't want Vista because I'm not sure if anything I'm going to be running will be compatible... also, I don't need a DVD burned or a hard drive that big and I'd still have to get a video card. I don't know - there are too many choices. I seriously am only going to be using this for MAME though so no need to get fancy. It will be locked away inside an arcade machine with no keyboard, mouse or internet connection. It will seriously only truly be used for MAME.

Unless I am misreading, you have two PCI-Express graphics cards and a motherboard that uses AGP
Unless I am misreading, you have two PCI-Express graphics cards and a motherboard that uses AGP
The graphics cards are either/or I think (he listed 2 and I should only choose one) and the motherboard specs list:

Expansion Slots
AGP Slots 1 x AGP 4X / 8X
PCI Express x16 None
PCI Slots 2

I think this means that I can use PCI or AGP, right? I should probably get confirmation on this before ordering...

The listing means that you have an AGP, and a PCI, but no PCI-E slot. You could probably go with the video card that I posted. That should be good enought for what you're doing. My 9800 Pro is a little bit better than that 9600, but it's lasted me quite well. I was able to get though Half Life 2 on it. I don't dare try Oblivion on it though. With what you're wanting to do it should be fine.

The setup posted by BuGG isn't that bad. I didn't know that AM2 socket processors had gotten that cheap. BuGG also post a link to a good hard drive. I tend to like the Seagate ones since they have 5 year warranties. And with all that space, you should be able to store a very large selection of Roms.

I'm so confused. So I should go with BuGG's setup except use your video card?
I'm so confused. So I should go with BuGG's setup except use your video card?
The setup I did was with a AMD socket 754 processor. I was looking at cheap and I hadn't checked the socket AM2 stuff which is the board in BuGG's setup uses. The AM2 socket is newer and you will have more upgrade ability in the future.

The one problem with what BuGG recommended was that he posted an AGP board and PCI-E video cards. That won't work. You can use either setup, but if you go with his, you'll to change the video card or the motherboard. You'll have to use an AGP card with his setup or change his motherboard for one that supports PCI-E.

Both systems are pretty good, but they are a little more than you need for just a cheap mame setup. With either setup, you could probably handle some of the later arcade and console emulators. If this is going to be strictly for Mame, you might not need all the power we have been suggesting. It just depends on the games you choose to play.

If you want to go cheap, there are other options. All you really need is a high P3, a low P4, or an athlon processor. You could check your local computer shops to see what they have. There's always craigslist. You could also watch for computer parts or even ask for them on your local Freecycle. I usually see parts and computers pop every once in a while, but depends on your area. I don't know who you work for, but you could check with your IT department to see if they have any old machines that they're getting rid of. I just thought I'd through out a few alternatives before you go and spend $200-$300.

So this should work? ->

I totally screwed up on that MB good eye to the one that pointed it out.

You can get a PCIX MB instead of the one I had listed in my first post. I just looked real quick and the price is very close to what the other one is.

BIOSTAR NF61S Micro AM2 SE Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 uATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $56 shipped before $10 rebate.

Now this MB has built in video. I dont know what your building this for (games, internet, graphical CAD stuff) so you may need a more dedicated Video card.

This MB has better spec 's compaired to the one I had in the original post.

1. It accepts DDR2 800 compaired to DDR2 667

2. It accepts SATA 3.0Gb instead of SATA 150

The problem with this is that you should change the memory and HD that we were talking about before.

With the change from AGP to PCIX this will keep you more up to date because AGP is phased out and video cards are really not made in AGP version anymore.

Let me know if you want me to kinda write/clean all this up in one new build.
