I haven't yet, but I noticed in the PS3 package they have a $10 rebate on a bunch of movies. I saw full metal jacket bluray at BB for $18. Combined with this rebate it isn't so bad. Also a bunch of other vendors like frys is having some discs at $14.99 and a whole bunch of them are $19.99.

So yeah combined with this rebate you can build a few titles into your bluray collection for 5-9 dollars after rebate.

I think i'm gonna go for T2, Crash, and Full metal Jacket.

the PQ on these disks finally put some justice on those HDTVs out there, more 720x480 resolution anymore :D

I picked up Terminator 1 & Underworld 2 at a Compusa closing a few months ago for 30 or 40% off. Got Monster House with the Deep Discount DVD sale & picked up Kingdom of Heaven at Frys.

I going to try to avoid going nuts on BluRay discs. I have enough DVDs anyway. I just want things I'd actually want to see in High Def.

Yeah same here. I'm trying to think of a good title to get on bluray. I'd like to get blackhawk down but I just bought the superbit dvd version a month ago =(. same with kung fu hustle, I just got the DVD box from hongkong.

I ordered Swordfish, Knight's Tale, and The Fifth Element with blockbuster online. I was expecting to see quite a difference, but I was still really impressed with the quality. I have one of the Philips HD CRT's, and it looks really nice. I think I'll probably be picking up some titles in the future.

BTW if anyone needs a code for Blockbuster, you get a 2-week trial with the code: 55076b

I picked up Terminator 2 and Full Metal Jacket this weekend. Great after the included $10 rebate in the PS3 Box.

The FMJ picture quality is a bit lacking due to it being such an old movie. I think the original transfer wasnt cleaned up at all which is a pity.

T2 looks fabulous though ;)

I only got T2 bluray through the deal.

Some people have been complaining about the bluray playback on the ps3, but I havent noticed any problems. Except the interface menu is a bit lame.

OH GOD please let me wire tie that setup.......... jesus it needs cable management.
OH GOD please let me wire tie that setup.......... jesus it needs cable management.
probably, but for the past 3 years i've had to move every year, so I don't feel like putting in the effort, not like the cables affect how my screen looks anyway.

Basically i've cut down on PC gaming spending, convinced my girlfriend to buy the Wii, and I sold a PS3 and a few xbox 360's around launch time. It's more than enough to pay off the consoles, so my job really isn't the bulk of the reason for it, though I guess it does help. Plus I don't have morgage payments yet =p, I still rent.

Given how much bitching you do about EVERY console, I'm surprised you own all of them.
They all suck and kick ass in their respective ways, what's so suprising?

I have...
Syriana
Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut
Black Hawk Down (In the mail)

I should have Talladega Nights, but I'm too lazy to go through the trouble of getting the copy that was left out of my PS3 box. It makes me more mad to know that a $10 rebate was included as well....
Are the blu-ray movies affected like the games are wit the whole 1080p thing or will they display on 1080i's correctly?
pretty sure they'll be downscaled to 480p if you can't support 720p

It will still look better than DVDs though.

Does anyone have a link to the list of titles that qualify for the rebate and the details? I don't have my PS3 yet, but I would like to look into getting some Bluray movies from Buy.com with Google checkout.
my girlfriend
post pics of that setup too, pls. i need to decide if your life is better than mine.

Does the PS3 only output 720p even on BD disks? If so, that's not good. I would hope that the BD drive would output at least 1080i, otherwise, what's the point?

I've read that Fifth Element is a somewhat disappointing transfer, though not 'bad'.

Old movies--Old movies can look great in high definition, it just depends on the quality of the original masters and how much work they do on cleanup. I rented the Errol FLynn RObin Hood HDDVD from Netflix, and it looked great. Even the Bugs Bunny Robin Hood cartoon looked great; Daffy Duck's green outfit was blindingly bright and green. Watching Forbidden Planet now, it's not as good a transfer, but it's still good.

As an HDDVD owner, I am interested in hearing how many people
* use their PS3 as a BD player, and
* buy BD disks.

I thought The Fifth Element looked fantastic. I have the add on HDDVD drive for the 360 too. There are some bad transfers for both formats, but so far on the really good quality movies they are very close in quality.

I have X-men 3 and Ice Age Meltdown. The picture on X3 looks good, but the sound is unbelieveable. Ice Age looks and sounds great.

Agreed carson, about old movies. Casablanca is suppose to look great, it even got 5 stars for the picture.
Real shame about "Forbidden Planet" not looking great. That's the one based off Shakespeare's "The Tempest" right? Great movie.
Rodeo I heart you for liking HOFD but you lose for buying the Blu-Ray version since done in MPEG2 and is single layer. By default some of it will look like shit picwise. Send it back to Sony and demand at least a dual layer one or a single layer with MPEG4 compression, I would. In fact I think Sony should burn all the single layer MPEG2 discs unless they're like 45 minutes or less.
Regardless in this format war whoever gets Korean, Japanese and Chinese Drama's, Martial Arts movies and some other of those movies wins most of my $. However if Studio Ghibli ends up on Blu-Ray SOME of my $ will go there though I'd prefer most of my $ in terms of HD discs would go to subsidizing the perfect HDTV technology that is SED.

As far as how to buy, this thread is already over.

Netflix
or
Buy.com + Google Checkout [+ Rebates].

That's all - but can anyone recommend particularly impressive transfers? We all have our own tastes, but PQ is a little more objective.

Also, nice setup, Zog. I kinda went in a different direction myself...

Mission Impossible 3.

buy.com w/ gco is the way to go, I've picked up all these hd-dvd's, about $14 each:
troy
constantine
the Mummy

still on the way:
batman begins
mission impossible trilogy
chronicles of riddick
pitch black
unforgiven
and I'm not done with this deal just yet...

Most of their hd stuff is around $20 each before discount so you can go 3 for a little over $40 or 2 and a cd for around $30. Just a warning, the free shipping takes FOREVER.

And I don't know for sure, but I've read that tears of the sun is one of the best looking bluray titles

here are two good places for hd reviews (both formats)
both

DVDtalk is horrible for reviews, don't bother with them.

I think they gave Tears of the Sun a 2/5 for picture quality.

Dood, how can you have a setup without a banana?

I can't stop this buy.com madness
Serenity hd-dvd $20.72
Chronos hd-dvd $15.59
Bourne Supremacy hd-dvd $20.84
$57.15
-$20.00
Total: $37.15

There are a lot of bluray titles around that $20 mark... think of as buy 2 get one free...

Yo, I didn't know there was a $10 rebate in the PS3...where was it??
and dude.....Zoglog...if there was a way to clone yourself to play all those consoles and absorb all the memories from your clones then you could get the most out of your room of doom!! but, since we can't do that yet.... Props on the rockin' game room!

It was with Talladega Nights....

http://www.blu-raymovierebate.com/

Those of you doing the rebate are you sending in the little proof of purchase or the entire bar code?

Yep. I couldn't pass up getting several Blu-ray movies for nearly nothing. I did most of my Christmas shopping at Buy.com this year, and since I had a lot of ~$30 gifts, I used the Blu-ray movies to allow me to get the $20 off of $50. Add in the rebate and it's a great deal.

Good luck with those blue-ray players.
When i bought my original ps2 dvds are what broke it.
Sony really pissed me off when I sent it in and they didnt fix it, luckily that was long enough ago where I got 100 dollar trade in credit. With mgs4 possibly on its way to 360, I say fuck you Sony. I hope the blue-ray players don't crash, but this is sony we are talking about.
ps how about those umds, that was a real winner and well thought out

It was a a rebate book that was in a bag with another bluray brochure thing. Not sure if it was with Talladega nights. But yeah You can submit multiple ones with no problem supposedly.

If it's not games, I don't care much about resolution. My wife bought Talladega Nights (my PS3 didn't come with it, but rather included Black Hawk Down), and was unimpressed. I know TN's not the best movie for showing off hi-def DVD (my TV is 720P), but I don't think it's worth double the price for discs on any movie. I mean, most of the TV I watch is TiVo'ed at medium quality, and I haven't even gotten component cables for my normal DVD player. Just not a priority for me.

bitter much?

When I get my PS3 next year around when Devil May Cry 4 hits, I'll be picking up Terminator 2, Enemy of the State, Speed, Gone In 60 Seconds, Rocky, Memento, Kung Fu Hustle, Unforgiven, Sleepy Hollow, Black Hawk Down, Gattaca, Training Day, The Usual Suspects, and Broken Arrow. Hopefully prices go down by then, but either way, I'll be able to afford it.
