Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Where the hell did you get WD for $20-$25? I think I paid $5.99 for the season pass.

I bought Xcom during black friday for $30 on PC. Well worth it at that price. If this is the same exact game but optimized for iPad, then $20 is a great price. We like to think that $60 is the normal price for console and PC games (unless you're a CAG) and that all apps should be $.99. That should not be the case. I'll gladly pay more for quality. Maybe people will pass on this game because it's $20 but when you think about it, Walking Dead is $20-$25 and look how amazing that game is.

Random Heroes 2 - FREE

http://appshopper.com/games/random-heroes-2

For those who play 1000 Heroz, the servers are back up. Make sure to Adventure back a few days to get all the golds.
It won't let me, because it doesn't remember that I have the full version (I got it free when they had a sale, shortly before it went perma-free, so I had the full unlocked version), and I don't want to pay 99 cents to get it back. Oh well, thanks for the update.
That's unfortunate. Have you tried Tweeting @RedLynxGamer and seeing if they can help?
Actually, are you guessedagain on there? That account is top-ranked on the CAG clan in the 10-day leaderboard. If not, that's quite a coincidence.
That's me. Hoping to join you in the CAG all time top 3 before the whole thing is over, but Slainet is making me work for it.
Thanks for the heads up! I was able to catch up on the golds for the missed days, although only the time from yesterday's level made it into the leaderboards... I haven't played today yet, btw I'm slainet on the CAG league for this game

Ah, finally slainet shows himself on here. ;)

You've been an invisible rival for many years.

In other news, thanks for tip on Random Heroes 2. It's funny: The only one of those games I've played is League of Evil 1, but I really liked it. Thus, I always try to snag these when they're cheap/free.

I'm getting addicted to Scurvy Scallywags, an extremely fun game!

I had a question though, and I apologize if it's a dumb one, can I play on two different devices (ie- my iPad and iPhone) and keep my progress between them? If so, how? I noticed that there was an "iCloud" option in the game but I don't think it means what I was hoping it meant.

I'm not saying XCOM isn't worth $20, but I don't think I'd pay $20 for it. I'm kind of interested in it though, heard it's a good game.
I believe XCOM on a tablet would actually play better than the console versions. That and I loved the console version. I fall into the boat of this game is worth $20 on the mobile market, but I doubt people will pay that much. Its the same thing I thought about old Final Fantasy games. But FF has a much larger cult following than XCOM did.

Personally I'll probably wait for a $10 sale on the game. As much as I want to support the dev, I am too much of a CAG to pay $20 for an iOS game since I have at least 50+ amazing games I got for free in my mobile gaming backlog.

The only mobile game I bought at full price was Chrono Trigger as I believe I own every version of that game (SNES, PSX, DS and iOS) as it is by far my favorite game of all time.

I've tried playing it on both platforms, but it seems that the only thing that is synced between the two is the progress for achievements. Characters are not. I could be missing something though, but this is what I've come across when iCloud is enabled.

$25 is MSRP, and a lot of people picked it up when it first came out, it took a few months for a sale to pop up.

(First, not sure how to reply directly on new CAG iPhone config)
Incorrect, Hirou. Cloud saving enables you to continue between iPhone and iPad versions of Scurvy Scallywags, for example. I've been doing it the whole time (lvl 20 after restarting once), Alien Spider.
It's as easy as clicking to continue on for me, so I'm not sure why you're not seeing that. You may want to check both the game's options and your iDevices to make sure cloud computing is enabled.

Ah, I was hoping that was the case! Thank you, sir! I will check my settings on both devices and see what's up.

Huh, that's odd. I made sure that iCloud was enabled on both devices and yet it wouldn't let me continue; I had to start over completely on my iPad. That's why I assumed they didn't let you continue with an already made character. Thanks for the tip though.

Same here. I've double and triple checked my settings, iCloud is enabled on both devices, iCloud option turned on on both game installs. I'm not sure what's going on. :(

Not sure what to tell you, guys. It's worked for me from the get. Only thing I can think of is maybe you need to back out to the menu before shutting down? I always do. Either of you try Googling or Tweeting for help?

Here's an screencap from when I just started the app on my iPad after playing last on iPhone:

HuxZyUV.jpg

I deleted the game on my ipad and redownloaded it, when I went to play it the second time I saw that very same screen and got excited before I realized that it was asking if I wanted to use the iCloud backup the game must have done when I tried playing on the ipad the first time, not my save from my iPhone game progress. It's not a big deal, obviously, I will probably look into it a little more later.

Dead Ahead is a free zombie-themed endless runner with super pixel-art and a pretty deep upgrade system. One of the few free apps i've ever spent money on.

Shadow Era is a card-battle game in the vein of Magic, with great community, addictive gameplay, and is not 'pay to win.' FREE.

http://www.appshopper.com/games/shadow-era-dark-prophecies

Eclipse: New Dawn for the Galaxy is expensive for an app ($6.99), but it's a solid port of the 2011 space strategy board game that is bonkers fun and won all kinds of awards

I bought Little Inferno because of this thread. Fun activity style.... game? Great price.
Yeah it's...interesting. There's a whole combo system and some metastory to it but I'm not sure if it could be called a 'game' but it's fun. Almost bought today at $5, I'm glad I waited and purchased Badland instead.

Funky Smugglers - FREE

http://appshopper.com/games/funky-smugglers

Good thing I held off on buying it when I saw it featured in the last humble bundle. :)
Awesome find! I have Funky Smugglers on my Tegra 3 powered Nexus 7 and ASUS TF300T tablets from the last Android Humble Bundle (the one that didn't have all of 11 Bit Studios games), and it's a great game! Since it has an emphasis on multitouch, I figure it might be harder to play on an iPhone or other smartphone or an iPod Touch, than on an iPad or other tablet.

Is magic 2014 going iPhone to?
I can't seem to find a guarantee online.
I don't have an iPad , but I would play the crap out of this on phone.

I just bought an iPad w/ Retina and was hoping some folks here could give some good recommendations for games.  I'm a longtime console/PC gamer but I don't really know anything about tablet games.  I'm open to more casual titles if they're good, but for the most part I'm hoping for recommendations for games with more depth, or even games that are more slow paced and atmospheric.  I tried looking around the app store, but I got nowhere.

I would definitely recommend Infinty Blade 2, which is actually on sale for 99cents right now. Then there's Year Walk which has a very creepy atmosphere, it's a bit on the short side and somewhat pricey but I still enjoyed it. The Room if your looking for an amazing puzzle game and Sword & Sorcery which I haven't finished yet but seems great. Here check this out http://kotaku.com/5878797/the-12-best-games-for-the-ipad
