Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Thanks for the recommendations.  I'll definitely pick up Infinity Blade II.  Year Walk and The Room were actually two of the only games I'd already bought based on a friend's recommendation.  I like them both and am hoping to see more games like that on the iPad.  Some of the other games in that list look good, too.

I'm still enjoying Warhammer Quest. Also, Rayman Jungle Run.

Is magic 2014 going iPhone to?
I can't seem to find a guarantee online.
I don't have an iPad , but I would play the crap out of this on phone.
I can't imagine any possible way a game like that could be played on the iPhone screen. They would have to re-design it for the smaller screen. You could easily accidentally play the wrong card because of how small they would be on the screen.

I just bought an iPad w/ Retina and was hoping some folks here could give some good recommendations for games. I'm a longtime console/PC gamer but I don't really know anything about tablet games. I'm open to more casual titles if they're good, but for the most part I'm hoping for recommendations for games with more depth, or even games that are more slow paced and atmospheric. I tried looking around the app store, but I got nowhere.
The very first post has many great apps. Please refer to that. We all have our favorites, current and all-time, but that first post is there to avoid clogging of the thread.

PWN: Combat Hacking was on my wishlist, I think due to Kotaku coverage. It's now free. Haven't played it yet, but looks sweet.

Um... Ascension , fluxx, there's A ton of card games that work great.

Quick question about a game I purchased. Has anyone bought out of the park baseball 13 for Ipad? When attempting to make trades I can't figure out how to add prospects from the minors. I can only get the other teams major league squad. What am I missing? Thanks if anyone can help.

Not down-rezzed. You tap on a card and it zooms in so you can see what you're doing. They actually play great.
So it's specifically designed for the smaller screen... That's what I thought. Putting the ipad version of Magicon the iphone simply down-rezzed without doing some re-design would be a disaster.

I'm not sure if it's specifically designed as a separate version, sine I think you can do the same thing in the ipad versions, only bigger.

Crazy Monster Bowling - Pro is free for the first time, down from $2.99.  It's basically a runner game, except you hit the pins (monsters) at the end.  The current version is bugged, in that it has ads like the free version and doesn't have multiplayer unlocked like it should.  They're trying to release another update to fix it.

Anyone know if the controls are at least decent on The Bards Tale? I know it's an older game so I'm not sure if it holds up or not.

Depends on the device you are using. On a tablet (iPad or Android tablet) the controls are fantastic in their own right. However, I play the Android version of The Bards Tale on my TF300T with a MOGA Pro, and from there, it's no comparison. I want to get the iOS version for my iPod Touch 5G, but while the controls are fantastic on a tablet, I don't know if they translate well onto a smartphone/iPod. Well worth the 99¢ in any regard.

Edit: The touch controls are available in Diablo style tap-to-move and virtual stick.

I have a MOGA Pro, but own BT on iPad/iPhone. This almost makes me want to buy it for my HTC One, too, but it's not .99 on Android, it's 2.99.

Anyone having trouble downloading on iTunes on computer? I tried to grab something, and when it asked for my password, I got an error message I've never seen before in the login screen saying "ConnectionManager: invoke: Failed to find service connection url"

I was able to log in fine on my phone though.

Bar Oasis takes the drink mixing gameplay of Nimble Strong and makes it completely dull and boring but it has the good looking anime art and a girl with large knockers so it naturally is far more popular.

Poker Night 2 (universal) down to 99 cents.
Yeah just noticed that too. Pretty great considering it just came out recently. Also it looks as if most of the Telltale games are $0.99 as well

Edit: My bad for the double-post

Back to the Future Episodes 2-5 are on sale for 99 cents. Anyone know if they're worth the price?
I haven't played the ios versions but I do have all the episodes on my ps3 and I've only played 2 of the episodes so far and I've had them for over a year. It's certainly not a bad game and I did enjoy some if the puzzles I played. I guess for $0.99 it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. Especially since the first episode is free.

So basically it's a puzzle game? I love the BTTF movies, but I'm not really into puzzles.
I wouldn't really call it a puzzle game, it's definitely more in the 'Point n Click Adventure' genre. There's a lot of backtracking to find items and whatnot from what I played, which was kind of tedious for me. But if you enjoy BTTF you may get more enjoyment out of it then I did.
