General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

got this earlier today ive been loving it, makes me wish id gotten the joe dangers for consoles
Not sure if this is still on sale (Joe Danger) but I've played a little and it's really good. Controls work great. The game didn't impress me on PS3 much, but it's one of the most polished and full-featured games I've played on iOS. 99 cents was a great deal. Buy it.

I bought KOTOR on sale for $4.99 based on the outstanding reviews since I never played the original. It might be just me but I think the controls need work and it is frustrating. Kind of wishing I would have passed on it. Since I'm talking about highly rated games, i picked up Badlands during the free sale and hated it. I'm not sure what the purpose of the game is or how it got such great reviews. Just my opinion.

Here's a few I found looking at TA and appshopper

RPG End of Aspiration ($8.99 -> $0.99)
mzl.kwdwylmx.320x480-75.jpg

Ninja Wrath ($1.99 -> 0.99)

The Sushi Spinnery ($3.99 -> 1.99)

I almost gave up on Badlands. If I hadn't paused it and seen a hint on how to control the little bastard, I would have deleted it. I was *that* close. Turns out I was swiping when I didn't need to. I get what they were trying to do, but their desire for a clean, un-tutorialed interface has probably cost them players who are justifiably lost.

You may want to try it again. It's a very good game, with occasional trial-and-error gameplay, that is overall really quite inventive and polished. Once you know what's going on and how to control it, the very minor irritations are quite forgivable because there's a ton of things to recommend it.

I thought the controls for badlands were pretty intuitive. That said I agree that it's a wonderful game.

It took 3 comments about this for me to realize you guys were talking about Badlands, not Borderlands. Because hoo-wee, was Borderlands on iOS a stinky deuce!

Have Badlands, but haven't played it. After beating Scurvy Scallywags I'm back to Nimble Quest.

Does Scurvy Scallywags emerge from its slump? I really got into it, then it was just more of the same, endlessly, being constantly cash poor from buying the necessary upgrades to keep pace with the monsters and unable to buy any new ships. I really liked it, then it became a slog and I stopped playing.

I had a lot of fun with scallywags, the gameplay doesn't change much as you progress other than having better skills. I died a few times before I was able to get all the songs but after a while you develop a strategy and it becomes a lot easier

Though I played to completion (and level 35 or so), I gotta say it doesn't change much. I pretty much kept my strategy; I just got better at navigating the board.
I don't know if it was a bug, but there were some islands where I was super overpowered. Sometimes it was the same island, just switching from iPhone to iPad. I honestly liked the challenge, though - having to dodge enemies as I built up my attack.

Well, as a favor to others, in case they are having the same issues I am having, if you downloaded VLC for iOS but you found out the audio in your files isn't playing. Well there is a possible fix for that, just manually change your time zone to Canada. Being on the East coast I just selected Toronto, Canada.

Also, someone said Frozen Synapse is on sale for $2.99. Having played the PC version I can safely say it is a very fun game. I'm not sure how well the controls translate to the touch screen but from what I gather they don't seem too bad.

Three pinball games from OOO-Gameprom have gone free for now:

Jungle Style Pinball (iPad)

Wild West Pinball (iPad)

The Deep Pinball (iPad)

These are all on sale right now and normally go for 99¢ each.

Haven't played them yet so I can't say how they compare to Zen Studios' tables. But I can tell you its a bit annoying for these to be individual apps for each table instead of being contained within one app.
Honestly, they're pretty weak compared to Zen Studios and Pinball Arcade. Now that those are out on iOS, I wouldn't even bother with these.

This isn't a sale, but I just found out about this game Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage and it's so good. Can't believe I hadn't heard of it when it came out last month. It's .99/2.99.Check this game out if you haven't. iPhone iPad

Does anybody know if the In App Purchase in Fishdom HD ever goes on sale?  I got the premium version of the game when it was "free" but now it's telling me I need to pay $4.99 if I want to keep playing.  I love the game, but $4.99 is kind of a lot for a game like this.

Here is the workaround that used to work.
Delete the app.
Install the app but don't launch it.
Turn off wifi/network.
Launch the game, play a level or 2.
Turn wifi back on.

Correct but you don't even need to play a level. I just create a profile and exit and i'm good to go.

Lots of 2K games on sale, the one I recall is XCOM for $15. Tiny Thief is 99 cents and Bad Piggies HD and I assume iphone are free.
Yeah some great sales. All the Siv Meier's games, Rage, Borderlands and more. As Solid-Snake-Eyes mentioned, Tiny Thief is $0.99 and is easily worth the original $2.99.

Bad Piggies (both the iPhone and the iPad versions) just went free. Working on a link from my phone.

EDIT: Added links. Hopefully they work well.

Joe Danger is surprisingly fun. I have not played Tiny Thief but it sound like you'll get at least a dollars worth out of it. If I were you I would buy both.

I would definatly say get Tiny Thief. I'm not really into Point and Click games but it didnt matter for this game. Everything is so well polished and charming. Plus it can be a 4-6 hour game depending on your play style (collect all stars, ect.) But if your really unsure check out some reviews and youtube videos to get a better idea.

Kingdom Rush has been free a couple of times before; appshopper shows historical price activity for games, etc. There's a free version at armorgames to try it out (not sure if it is still identical to the iphone version)
