Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Amateur Surgeon 3 just came out, I LOVE this series!:

I do too. The freemium stuff here looks sketchy though and... dammit, I actually kinda liked the story of the previous games. The bonus operation in AS2 was almost kinda touching. It appears we're going pastiche now.

One funny thing, when they introduced the freemium shop in AS2, they had unique character dialogue for me since I had already 100%'d the game.

When I started Kingdom Rush Frontiers it put some news screen in my face saying that heroes are on sale, so I checked and they aren't on sale. Not that I would buy one, but I was curious.

This is still on sale, and I would definitely recommend it. Can't say I would recommend the IAP heroes though, at least not at the current price. If they were $0.99 a pop I would get every one of them since the game itself is great, but I definitely can't justify paying the current costs.

I wonder how much of a discount they will put on the IAP when it actually goes on sale.

Anyone get in on the movie collections error from this morning?  Harry Potter complete collection was $9.99 as were LOTR, Lethal weapon, Austin power, TMNT and a couple of other collections.  Modified before I could buy them :(

No, but I would have!

I got the Harry Potter set. I'd already bought the sd copies a few years ago and I figured 10 to upgrade was worth it. I don't even know how much I've spent in HP with all the dvd, blus and 3d blus

Haven't had to use real money yet and I've gotten all the stars in Egypt levels and most of them in Pirate levels. This game is awesome. Still not sure about their free-to-play strategy because I easily would have given them $7 for it.
The deal is though, that for every person like you and me who won't buy the free-mium items, there're dozens more that will. They're too busy to grind through the game, or their kids will whine enough to make sure that EA/popcap get their investment back times a million.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 - I've been playing it for a few weeks. Really fun. Much longer than the first, great challenges, and the game is more difficult than the original. There are certain levels where I couldn't get the right formula for my plant/sun defense setup and had to watch youtube videos for a couple walkthroughs to get some of the stars. You don't need to spend any money and the game is, in my opinion, much more fun than the first.

Damn I'm actually sorta bummed PvZ2 is freemium. I'd much rather have paid a one time $5-10. I hate being bombarded with constant purchases littered throughout the game. Hopefully all of these "purchasable plants" can be gained other ways as well... Otherwise that's pretty lame. I laughed $3 for a single plant.

Yeah, for a lot of games I'm fine with freemium since I don't play them all that much. But this is one exception where I would have gladly shelled out $5 for a "complete" version.

In any case, damn them for releasing it at night - I had a hell of a hard time getting my son to stop playing and go to bed ;). But after looking at his "game board" I saw all the locked doors (blocking side paths with other levels) with $2.99 price tags on them. I assume you can earn enough keys by playing? Or are those just non-essential extra paths that are not needed to progress?

Yea the keys drop randomly during levels or from a Yeti. I've only played 3 hours or so and unlocked most of them already. The side paths are more mini games/challenge levels.

Mine is DL'ing.  I tend to buy games even if I don't play them just to show support for what they're doing (like KOTOR).  I would have ponied up $2.99 if they'd reduced the IAP stuff.  But since people say I can play it for free with no money, I'll be playing it for free, with no money invested.

Re: PvZ2

It would be a nice gesture if they had a first week special on the IAPs.

Like if you buy everything, 50% off.

As soon as I looked at the "top in app purchases" and saw there were plants listed I was immediately turned off to the game. I'm really sick of in app purchases that aren't full expansions but rather individual pieces of the game. I know developers and certain purchasers will defend it but I'd rather see free demos and full purchases of games than this incremental purchase of the full game garbage...

I laughed at the $100 coin IAP.
Best value my ass. Who the hell pumps $100 into an ios game?

iOS7 compatible?
This is taken from the iTunes description:

[customspoiler='What's New:']
Support for iOS 7

• New surprise at the end of Wild West!
• More Treasure Yeti appearances
• Preview the action with Attract Mode
• Updated and improved audio
• Bug fixes
* Content not downloading when you opt out of cellular data download
* Crashes when using accented characters in the account name
* Audio does not return when a phone call interrupts gameplay
* Numerous stability issues
[/customspoiler]

From what I've read about PvZ 2 all the IAPs are shortcuts, and you don't have to pay anything to unlock everything, it'll just take longer.

I read that the 6 pay plants were only acquired through IAP. I hope you're right

If any of the plants are IAP only I will just be uninstalling the game. Not worth the time investment. Already annoyed with the constant unlock for $2.99! Unlocking a door costs $3? Lol, sad.

Well I bought the snow pea because it was my favorite plant in PvZ, but I can't see myself paying for anything else. I'd much rather have just bought the game as a single package. Oh well...

Looks like some of the plants are IAP only, but that's not for lack of overall content, so I sure won't be uninstalling it over that. I'm happy to play through one of few well thought out free-to-play games.

Yeah, after all it is still PvsZ.  My son started playing again when he got up this morning and I'm not sure if he's stopped yet.  We'll have to drag him away to do some swimming ;).

In any case, it will be interesting in the long term if they make more this way than if they had just sold the game for $5.  I know for sure they would have gotten $5 out of me if it lunched (complete, with no IAP) at that price.  As it is, they will get $0 from me for the iOS version.  (I will probably buy it on a console if/when that happens).
