General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Yeah, after all it is still PvsZ. My son started playing again when he got up this morning and I'm not sure if he's stopped yet. We'll have to drag him away to do some swimming ;).

In any case, it will be interesting in the long term if they make more this way than if they had just sold the game for $5. I know for sure they would have gotten $5 out of me if it lunched (complete, with no IAP) at that price. As it is, they will get $0 from me for the iOS version. (I will probably buy it on a console if/when that happens).
It's the Candy Crush business model. I would have never guessed that so many people would dump money on that game but here we are.

I've posted this before by Candy Crush makes 2.4 million per day. The model works people or it wouldve died by now. The question is, when does the bubble burst?

I have AAA think I can get them to unlock the door for free? :)
Maybe if you're playing

I don't think it will - they'll keep refining and retooling these IAP/gambling addiction models so they become more and more attractive, as has been happening. Farmville etc. is already dying, but by the time Candy Crush dies we'll see newer, more addictive games...

As much as we may not like it, the upside of this business model probably means more PvZ without waiting years. They have created a system where they can easily add worlds, the same way candy crush or angry birds does. They will charge for them, presumably, but it still means more stages with much less waiting.

I've played everything for free so far. All my doors are easily unlocked by keys that drop while I grind out stars. The star thing muffs me a bit because each star should have a condition attached to it rather than replaying the same level 4 times but it does add longevity to it, I suppose. If your panties are in a wad over the 6 "DLC" plants, well whatever. The game is free if you but take your time. Kinda like Angry Birds Star Wars. If you took the time to 3 star things, you got those Dagobah missions without ponying up money.

Not a deal per se but be careful in upgrading tapatalk if you have it and like the interface. The upgrade is very very different and is down to two stars in the App Store.
On the bright side if you've never used it before I think the non pro version is now free.

I really wish I didn't upgrade

They added a classic thread style to Tapatalk and now I like it again. That stupid magic wheel thing sucks royally, so I'm glad we have an alternative. In some ways the new app (with 'classic thread') is better than the old Tapatalk.

Baldur's Gate sounds like it doesn't play that well on iPad due to wonky controls, going from the reviews in iTunes. Anyone here have a different story to tell?

I grabbed it because I had iTunes credit I wasn't using and against my better judgment. So far it's playing a lot better than I was expecting from the reviews. Haven't had any major problems, although I did notice a couple menus/areas where the controls get a little funky. It is not game breaking like most of the reviews make it seem. I'm only ~2 hours in so that could change but i like the game so far and bought it on impulse more or less from childhood nostalgia. It's awesome so far!

Just a heads up, I'm on an iPad retina. Not sure if that will make much of a difference or not to how it will run on your device.

Anyone try playing Asphalt 8 on an iPod Touch 5? I watched a youtube and it seemed to stutter every now and then like it was loading the next part of the track. Just wondering about performance.

Madden is.... terri-bad.  I don't have a word that convey's my sheer dismay over it.  It's bad even FOR F2P garbage... I'll deal with it to grind stuff out.. but this isn't even worth grinding out.

I bought the game the minute it came out. There is a bit of microstutter now and then, but it is hardly noticeable. Other than that, it is perfectly playable on an iPod Touch 5G or iPhone 4S. Funny thing is, most of the microstutter happens right before the race starts. I gotta say, though, this game totally destroys Asphalt 7! So worth the dollar!

Thanks a lot, haven't been able to get a direct answer from anyone on this topic before now. I've checked the youtube vids as I said but it's hard to tell from a video sometimes. :applause:

Thoughts on either of these? I couldn't get in to Minecraft because the Survival Mode wasn't quite "survivalist" enough. I heard that Terraria is more about fighting enemies and such, how much so?

I can't speak for Terraria on the iPad but I can tell you that it has a TON of hours on my Steam.  I like it.  But once you beat the baddies, the magic is gone.  And some of them are harassing.

I'm looking at Junk Jack X.  Didn't care for the earliest incarnation of Junk Jack but they fixed a bunch since then.

I felt the same, and LOVE Terraria. I'd bet you will too.

And also bought Junk Jack X, loved the first and this one sounds like it's added a ton of stuff.

Terraria for iPad or for Vita? That is the question. I'm thinking the Vita stands a better chance of having good controls, but I hope there's a demo.

Get Terraria on Vita and Junk Jack X on iPad, problem solved!  I've been playing JJX on my iPad and it's great!! Soooo addicting...I've read Terraria has some wonky touch controls on iOS, but JJX controls perfectly! I'm really impressed with how well they did with it.

I've never played mine craft, junk jack or terraria but terraria looks interesting. I only have an iPhone 5 not iPad or Vita. What game should I get!?

Terraria on Steam was a huge disappointment for me. Played an hour; most of that time was spent digging tunnels. Never wanted to go bam. And I was excited for it.

It's very low action. More action than Minecraft I think, but nothing like an actual action/adventure game. Calling it Metroidvania is about the worst expectation you could lump on it, in my opinion.

Terraria has a lot of action, though not at the level of Metroidvania. You need to play longer before enemies become a threat. You better have some sweet gear to take on the end bosses. I worry touch controls won't be good enough later on in the game.

I gave Terraria an hour. Not for me. Really disliked my time with it. Just wanted to make sure curious people didn't only get positive opinions when there are gamers like myself who didn't enjoy it.

W.E.L.D.E.R. is free. I've gotten a lot enjoyment out of this title and recommend it to anyone who likes word games.I think it's usually $2.99. Now, if I could just rediculous fishing for free...

Kinda OT...

Does anyone know of an iPad app that can handle MS Office doc/docx files with tables (Word tables, not Excel embedded tables) and won't screw up the formatting going between tablet and desktop.  So far, I've had the best "luck" with Office 2 HD, but the font formatting (style and size) always gets lost in the transition.  So far others I have had less success with are: Pages, Documents to Go, Quick Office Pro HD and Documents Unlimited.
