Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.
Warhammer Quest is awesome. great tactics game. i'd buy the dlc if that were on sale, but alas...
Thanks. I was hesitant but I saw it was universal so I'm in.

Is warhammer worth it without all the DLC? Ive been interested in it but just wary of all that damn IAP, it generally turns me away even from a possibly good game just because it feels like a dev could fall into the forced pay to win death spiral.  I see alot of the IAP is new characters, so are any of those unlockable? Are you just stuck with one class until you pay?

I wish I hadn't bought the warhammer level pack, it's only good if you start all new characters with it. I used my levelled up party from the main game and every dungeon was a cakewalk cause it's designed for low level starting characters. I guess I could have started over but by that point I had invested so much time into levelling up my guys and getting great gear.

The problem is they designed it like an expansion, the map grows and the new DLC levels are filled in like it's all one land, one game, except all the dungeons for the DLC start at level 1 difficulty like the ones in the original game, like it's designed only for a new player. I basically said that already, but trying to clarify why I think it's a poor design.

I'm not saying don't buy the levels, but know what you're getting into and you'll probably want to start with new characters when you play the DLC.

The DLC characters are totally optional, you get a good selection of characters built into the main game, don't feel as if you aren't getting a full game because of that.

It's a cool game, I really enjoyed the main base part of it for many hours, 99 cents is an absolute steal.

Threes is the first iOS game that I have bought in a while ($1.99) and it's a really good puzzle game. Very addicting. You slide a grid of numbered squares, all at once, but squares can't go outside the grid. You use that mechanic to shift them around and combine them. 1 & 2 can only combine with each other (adding to 3) and everything else has to be a matching pair. So 3+3 makes a 6 square. Etc. Every time you slide the grid a new square is added (and you can see what type its going to be (1, 2 or 3+). Try to get the highest numbers you can in the grid. I think what really makes this work is that while it's simple it's quite strategic AND games only take 5 minutes or so. A lot of puzzle games go on and on forever and I get bored with them before they are over. This one is quick and fits the just-one-more-time bill. Definitely recommended.

I'm a little unclear on how the scoring works, but obviously more large numbers are better.

Aside from frequently checking in-game are there any services (app, website, etc.) that can alert you to in app purchase sales?

YES! still worth it. tons of content, 4 characters (you can swap in the other 2 if you decide to buy them). they are not unlockable, but I don't think they're necessary, either.

I can tell you how scoring works. First let's look at the numbers themselves. You have 2+1 then you have 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 192, 384, 768, 1536, 3072, and 6144. Starting with X = 1 and starting at 3 then scoring is as follows 3^X. So...

3 is worth 3

6 is worth 9

12 is worth 27

24 is worth 81

48 is worth 243

96 is worth 729

192 is worth 2187

384 is worth 6561

768 is worth 19683

1536 is worth 59049

3072 is worth 177147

6144 is worth 531441

Note this is a working theory because I have to create any numbers beyond 384 and if I had to guess based on existing Game Center leaderboards that no one has created any numbers beyond 768!

Oh and as side note when I first saw that the developers of PuzzleJuice had a new app out I instantly bought and have been enjoying it since. I agree with that unlike some other puzzle games, PuzzleJuice included, these matches/rounds/games of Threes tend to be much quicker and easily can fall into that one-more time category of addictive play. With that in mind I definitely recommend Threes to any one looking for a new, great puzzle game to play!

Makes me wonder which of the dozens of impending Flappy Bird clones will take its place as the go to for this new phenomenon.

The original King is gone by its own hand (likely with the outside machinations of others) and now various others fight to take the F2P throne.

Its the Game of Clones.

Dungelot 2 will be available with the App Store update for 2-14...in about 16 hours from now.

They accidentally flipped the switch early and it was available for a very brief time which is why AppShopper picked it up.
In 16 hours, it will be 2/13. I loved the first Dungelot. Hoping they improve on the game. Too many cheap ranged units though. Hopefully they rebalance that in this one.

nvm

Yeah yeah. duh
Didn't even look at the calendar.
So should be 10pm CST tomorrow night if dated for 2-14.

App Store updates at midnight of the furthest ahead time zone of the region ... for the US App Store that means 10pm CST every Wednesday for new releases that are dated for Thursday.

Since this game is dated for 2-14 it should be out with the rest of the new releases tonight which is technically tomorrow in some areas that the US App Store services.
That is good to know!! Thanks for the info. I did not realize that the update happens at that time.

Flappy Bird is not terrible, really. I mean it is super simple, but it is challenging, quick (as a result) and easy to hit restart on. I play it on occasion.

Dungelot 2 will be the next purchase from me. That is, if it is not F2P with micro transactions.

From what I've read it will be free but has a 'stamina' system where you have to wait half an hour to play (or pay) after depleting stamina.

You can do away with the stamina system with a one-time unlock of $3.99.

So basically, free to try or buy for four bucks.

In regards to the IAP structure, devs said :

Pretty soft in compare with huge freemium games.

We have stamina, meat
smile.gif
It takes 30 min to refill. You may refill it, increase max meat cap.

But we give also an option to remove stamina system. This will suit people who want to pay once && play without any restrictions.

Another thing to buy is rune stones. Runes needed for resurrection in dungeons ( if you want to continue playing after losing ), activating portals ( special places in dungeons that allow to start next run from current place ) and in item upgrades ( increase to 100% success chance of upgrade )

The last thing to buy is gold. There is no second currency in game and no special power ups or boosts that are available only for paid audience.

As for content we will sell new heroes.

Thats all

I'm confused. Does the one-time purchase do away with all the microtransations, or are they still effectively necessary? I"m suddenly finding myself less interested….

Same, I can not stand IAP. I'd rather just pay one time to play it as it was intended to be played. My understanding of it is $4 to do away with stamina, but still have IAP.

Threes looks awesome, and the recommendations are making it a slam dunk for me. I haven't gamed much on the iOS in the last year, so hopefully this will bring me back a bit. Also gonna snag Warhammer Quest since it is still a buck.
