Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
~ (symbol beside the "1" on standard US keyboards) are iPhone 6/6+ optimized. Note that apps that are iPhone 6/6+ optimized are by default iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

I stumbled with the controls a good bit playing Terraria on my Nexus 7; lots of missing crucial jumps when facing tough enemies underground.

I'm kind of tempted to get Bioshock, because I've never played more than the first hour, and I just don't see myself investing the time to play it on my PS3. I know the graphics were downgraded, but does it control fairly well? I get along pretty great with most iOS shooters, but Bioshock had some pretty hectic firefights from the get-go so I'm wondering if it gets too out of control to play on my iPhone.

Terraria is actually a far better game on ipad than it is on pc. The zoom feature is great and for .99, it has a tremendous amount of depth. For a game I didn't particularly enjoy on PC, I'm having a blast with it on iPad.
You know what they say about opinions...

Terraria is best on PC, but even on my Android phone it controls much better than on the iPad, although to be fair I haven't put a lot of time into the iOS version yet. The best portable version is Vita however.

FTL is half off at $4.99. First time it's been on sale. I've heard the iPad version controls much more naturally than the PC version and as a result makes the game much more enjoyable as a whole.

Chrome Wolf is currently on sale for 0.99 it's usually 7.99 and it's the best Kemco RPG on the market IMHO.

I'm not sure If any of their other games are on sale

I love games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Shining Force... Can anyone talk me into or out of buying Banner Saga? I've never heard of it.

I just recently bought The Banner Saga on iOS and Mac and beaten it as well. Both were $4.99 and if your tech isn't too old, it's playable on both, though my itouch 5th gen stuttered a little but I hear it plays like a dream on newer iPads and my laptop did fine. The game is beautifully drawn and the battles can last for 30-45 mins if you're trying to play the perfect battle or like me, level up your units evenly with kills. The difficulty is there, even on normal and it feels right.

I was yearning for a Fire Emblem-esque game and got my fix here. You have units with stories and personalities, though the dialogue they give you is good, don't expect too much from every single unique character (game was made by 3 people?) The strategy is pretty deep and there are so many combinations to set up with your tactics. There is some decision making via Oregon Trail choices in between battles. The consequences of which can determine if you recruit certain characters, lose them, face tougher or easier battles, etc.

It is part of a planned trilogy and the sequel was just announced recently as well. If you like epics and dig Game of Thrones (I liked the music too), and want a punishing but approachable strategy game, you could do worse for $5. I say buy it and support the developers! It really is amazing that such a small team did this game.

I went back on Steam and downloaded Terraria ... played for a half hour (with about 10 hours logged from long ago) and I hated the controls. I hated clicking for each swing or on each block. The ipad controls worked with more fluidity for me once I got the hang of it. I've never been a big fan of Terraria to begin with, I find it to be mildly charming but nowhere near the fun of something like minecraft, but for .99 I got my money's worth.

I wouldn't personally spend $30 for it on a console or however much it's going for on Vita.

How long is the game total? Do you think I'll have any complaints using an iPhone 5s? I am upgrading to the 6+ as soon as my Verizon has them in stock.

And since you seem to enjoy the same kind of games I do... Have you tried the GBA emulator for the iPhone? I just want to throw this out of left field to a fellow Fire Emblem fan... The Last Promise is a complete rom hack that very well could be one of the greatest games I've ever played and I highly recommend you at least Google it.

You know you can hit the ALT key on the keyboard and it switches to the same "smart" mode that is on the consoles, where you don't have to target individual blocks, right?

Still doesn't let you use a 360 controller natively on the PC version though. ;) I just found it more addicting on the iPad in a way the PC version didn't grab me.

I think the game can take 8-10 hours on the extremely fast side if you are playing easy or know what you're doing and skip dialogue and any extra battles you can (there's a risk/reward mechanic where after fighting a battle, you can attempt another right away for possible items or extra exp to level up. I always chose to do them since exp can be scarce, but if you didn't play the first battle well, the second one could be really tough and you might die since you start with whatever health and units you have left and not fresh).

I personally took 20+ hours, min/maxing my characters efficiently which you are used to as a FE fan. Spreading exp is easier, since kills are all that counts, not what kind of baddie was killed. And you might take longer should you lose a key character or decide to invest in one for their different skill sets.

I think the 5s had a newer chip than my itouch 5th gen, so it might help. Dialogue can be a little tiny and if you can, I recommend on a laptop or iPad for a better experience. But if you are used to srpging on a mobile, you would probably still be ok.

And I have played TLP and enjoyed it as well. The sole creator did a great job with the animations and music. You are probably also looking forward to the Immortal Sword project as well? It's been in the making for a long time but the main dev makes awesome sprite animations. And then don't get me started on playing Japanese FE hacks with really good sprite work!

I've been looking forward to so many hacks but they all seem to get delayed or canceled which is understood.

The Dream of Five version that I played about a year ago was outstanding but I honestly feel like TLP is just as good as FEGBA is.

I supposed I'm gonna give banner saga a shot. I love SRPGs and ones like FFT are getting more scarce each year

Indeed they are. From what I have played, it is not on the same level of FFT of course, but I hardly expected that. It is a good SRPG though and easily worth the $5 if you have a good device to play it on.

The Magic 2015 full game unlock (Hunt bigger game) and expansion pack are on sale for $4.99 and $1.99 respectively.
Just noticed on AppSnatcher that "Magic 2014 - Duels of the Planewalkers" has 2 significant IAP price drops:

  • Magic 2014 Premium Content Pack ... $1.99 (was $9.99)
Additional content is also available for purchase. Premium content package will get you:
    • 7 additional decks to unlock
    • 250+ additional cards unlockable through play
    • 4 deadly opponents, including the Planeswalker Chandra Nalaar
    • 18 additional Campaign levels across the planes of Ravnica, Alara, Innistrad and Zendikar, plus 11 revenge matches
    • 10 puzzling challenges
    • Online one-on-one Multiplayer play
    • Two-Headed Giant and Custom Game modes
    • Access to deck key and foil conversion in-app purchases
    • Additional downloadable content as it becomes available
  • Magic 2014 Expansion ... $0.99 (was $4.99)
The "expansion" seems to be a subset of the "premium" content, and the info I found is less specific:
    • Five New Playable Decks
    • New Campaign Levels
    • Battle through six new single-player campaign levels, exploring the planes of Ravnica and Kamigawa.

    • Five New Challenges
    • Unlock Items
Of course my iPad is only a v1 model, and this game requires iOS 6.0 or later, so I'm screwed out of this great deal. :(

Thought I would just chime in about Terraria on iOS. I've always been interested in the game on PC but since I never play games on PC any more I kinda forgot about it until it went on sale for a $1. I have to say I LOVE this game, it's super addicting for someone who just loves exploring for exploring's sake (Fallout 3 for example). Plus there is Cloud save option for both your character and world, so I can play on my iPad at home and on my iPhone when I'm out and bored. I'll agree that I have difficulty with the touch screen controls at times (getting up a rope ladder is a major pain) but overall they're great. Anyway, fantastic game!

I also got the Goat Simulator game, that one's a blast too.

Table Top Racing Premium Edition is free once again.

In this special 'Premium Edition' the cost of the cars, upgrades, 'weapon wheels' and paint schemes have all been reduced by 50% and all can be won through game play alone without the need for further In-App spending or excessive "grind". In-App purchases are there if you want an accelerator.

This thread has been a bit quiet lately, just to keep it moving ... can anyone tell me what the most graphically intensive game out for iOS would be? I'm looking for something that really puts the new Iphone 6 through its paces. I know the power hasn't been maxed out, but what's something that runs better on a 6 than prior models?

Shades is the Apple app of the week. A really clever and challenging take on Tetris. I played 5 or so games and it gets a solid recommendation from me.

Anyone have any advice on getting iTunes to run more smoothly? It feels like a constant lag fest every time I try to manage my apps. I'm guessing there isn't much that can be done but I'm seriously thinking of attempting a fresh install.

Haha, no thanks .. been down that road before and, as someone who grew up with macs, I can't stand some of Apple's design choices in OSX.

Hey now, Bioshock was great for its time. I'd love to see an HD upgrade someday or actually more of a remake the way they rebooted Doom.

I'm so bummed... I lost all of my Simpsons tapped out content some how... I can't access it through origins
That happened to me with Marvel Avengers Alliance. Swore off all F2P games after that. It really bummed me out because I'd always dreamed of a Marvel licensed turn-based RPG... :(

I'm pretty heated about it. I don't see how it even happens with the Facebook and Origin account you'd think one could work as a backup.

That's nothing compared to my Brave Frontier story, I woke up one day with my save data restarted with a different starter. Probably 100 hours and 30 bucks worth of gems (over the course of about 9 months mind you... And all of those were from bing rewards cash ins) down the drain... and no... Nobody else has access to my phone. I use the fingerprint recognition as my locking mechanism.
