Are USB chargers safe to use?

Is it safe to charge your PSP using a USB port? Someone told me this should be avoided, since the USB+power cables sold for the PSP are of low quality, and could easily end in a power surge that wrecks both the PSP and your PC. Any truth to that?

not sure about the psp but my creative micro charges thru my comp's usb port and no trouble yet.

They are sompletely save to use.

They are 5v DC, all specs identical to a wall charge.

In fact, it is even SAFER because it will take less damage suring a power surge.

Well i read for cell phones its a bad idea so i made sure to stay away from it for my PSP as well.
