▼ Read Me! FAQ ▼ Pre-Order $10 Program
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can I pre-order and purchase multiple copies of a
qualifying game and get multiple awards?
No. There is a limit of one (1) award per My Best Buy
member per game title.
What if I pre-ordered a qualifying game before I
saw this offer?
If you pre-ordered a qualifying game before seeing
this offer, you’ll still qualify for the offer as long as
your member ID is attached to the transaction.
When will I receive my $10 reward certificate?
For each qualified purchase, you will receive 500 My
Best Buy points (worth $10 in reward certificates)
credited to your account approximately 15–20 days
after street date or store pickup.
If I pre-order a game now using my GCU and the
game releases after my membership ends, will
I still get the 20% off discount?
- From BestBuy Support Forums (link):
For in-store pre-orders, I can definitively say that if
your GCU membership is expired when you
complete your pickup, you will not receive the 20%
discount. This is because in-store pre-orders are not
processed until the time of pickup, and we only
collect an up-front deposit.

Pre-orders made on BestBuy.com are not as cut and
dry as in-store, but it is possible to retain your GCU
discount on a title released after your membership
expires for these types of pre-orders. Reason being,
when you place your pre-order the GCU discount is
calculated up front, and we then pre-authorize the
discounted total with your bank. If all goes well, the
discount can be retained upon release, however,
there is no guarantee.

A sure way to lose the discount on BestBuy.com
pre-orders is if any modifications are made to the
order prior to release, but after your membership
has expired. These modifications could be updating
the billing address, changing the form of payment,
and others. This is because when a modification is
made it triggers another authorization on your form of
payment, which should recalculate the price if your
GCU membership is no longer active.

I still have GCU so I preordered immediately after it went up. I get the feeling when it finally runs out I'll be getting more European imports from mass genie.

Except this isn't a deals thread. It's for paying full price at release and getting a bonus for supporting these developers.
Isn't getting $10 in rewards for pre-ordering a game—something that is not a normal practice—the literal definition of a deal?

If I order both versions of Pokémon will I get $10 from each? I know with two identical copies of the same game it doesn’t work.
According to a Best Buy rep, you'll get $10 from each, so $20 total in rewards when you pre-order both versions of Pokemon.

That would be cool, I'll probably end up buying both then.
I have never played a Pokemon game before, and this Switch version will be my first. Is it typical that we buy both version of the game? I've done research online so I think I see the advantages-versus-cost analysis, but I'd like to hear from my beloved CAGs.

Edit: Because I personally did not find it worth to buy both Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. I bought both and ended up selling one because I just couldn't justify having both of them, after trying out both.

Other then making money the old reason for two versions was so that a person with Red could trade Pokémon that were exclusive to Red with a person that had Blue exclusive Pokémon. They probably sold a ton of Game Boy connection cables and it was a smart way for Nintendo to encourage gamers to be social with other gamers and convince friends to buy into the series. I wouldn't say its necessary to own both I just normally end up getting them eventually and since I will still have GCU paired with the $10 it makes it a good deal. If I didn't have GCU to go along with the $10 bonus then I would probably just go with whichever game has better unique Pokémon to catch.

A Free $10 cert is only a "deal" if you use CAG math and consider it a discount on the game it comes with rather than the one you actually use it on. ;)

You're not even arguing semantics here; you're trying to redefine the idea of what constitutes a good deal for some inane need.

Paying $60 for a game: standard practice, not a good deal.

Paying $48 for a $60 game (20% off): deal; you are already ahead.

Paying $30 for a $15 game / $35 for a $25 game, etc: not a deal; bad practice if looking for a good price point. (This idea of paying more for a game could be considered exactly what happens when I purchase a Limited Run Game, or a Switch game that's $5-10 cheaper on every other platform ever.)

Paying $60 for a game and getting a $10 "coupon" to use for future purchases: not standard practice, yet a good deal, as you come out ahead by obtaining $70 of value for spending only $60. The "lack of value" on the $10 "coupon" is only subjective if the individual receiving it, personally, has already written off future purchases at places that honor the coupon. The game itself may not have been cheaper, but the next purchase (game, movie, or otherwise) will be, because of the deal they were already given in the form of a $10 "coupon". And since the purchaser is coming out ahead, this form of deal will never not make this a standard transaction or a bad deal. No special math required.

I also like the:

Paying $48 for a $60 dollar game (20% off) AND getting a $10 "coupon" for my next game: That could also be for another game at 20% off and ANOTHER $10.

My GCU ran out on Monday...End of an era. Now all I can hope for are these $10 pre-order deals.
And all one of them too. Edit: TWO! Oh my I bite my tongue! See? A wealth of options. XD T_T

I love the people who justify it as: "for game A I pay $48 w/ GCU and get a $10 GC, so it's practically $38!" but then they factor that same $10 coupon into their next purchase and claim a $60 game is $50, and then add $50 and $38 together thinking that's the actual total they paid xD

Yeah but since it was paid for with a gift card from Grandma, it's like I made money!

This is the real CAG math.

Sorry to be a bit of dick here. But please don't assume and add crap to what I said. I never mention "like paying $38" or insinuated anything about using the same $10 dollar coupon 2 times. Sorry If you weren't talking about me in particular, It's that you quoted me and it seemed directed at me.

Again sorry about being a bit salty here but one thing that gets under mys skin is when people warp what others say or make assume things

I'm going to miss GCU. Mine expires early April so will make some last orders this month and that will include Pokemon for sure. After it expires it will only be certain AAA games and my usual niche purchases.

Only reason I am buying games like anthem and division, they won't be this cheap until BF. When my GCU runs out probably wont by day one releases anymore and just stick to game pass.

Yeah, I'll honestly be curious to see how much this hurts publishers once all the carryover GCU people are gone. I'm guessing new game sales will continue to drop, but they won't have a clue why since this has been happening gradually. Really, that would have been the good thing about GCU just being killed off and everyone being reimbursed for their remaining subscription. Pre-orders and new release sales would have tanked, and there would be a clear picture why a program like this has longterm value.

Sidenote: I came into this thread because I was curious if MLB The Show 19 had a $10 pre-order bonus. But, I see (as expected), BB is skimping on the alleged "replacement" for GCU. Feels like they're just delaying the inevitable. Digital is definitely the future, but it sure would be nice if these publishers would pass on their manufacturing and distribution savings to the customer.

You're joking right? Anthem and Division 2 will be probably be $30 (or cheaper) by end of summer.

It won't hurt publishers at all. Best Buy made no money from the program and frankly, the margins are far higher on digital sales than physical ones for publishers, so selling more physical product is not the goal of most publishers today anyway and certainly not at prices below digital pricing when the game can be resold or traded in. People who are serious gamers (as opposed to collectors or people with endless backlogs) are always going to want to buy certain AAA games day one anyway because that's when the community is largest and most active online. Publishers will continue to provide incentives like exclusive DLC, beta access, steelbooks and other things to drive those day one sales. Frankly, I'm sad to see GCU go, but it was never a sustainable model and it was more about Best Buy's desperation to build market share even if it meant waiving profits.

You don't need both versions, especially if this is your first foray into the series.

Did anyone get their 10$ for preordering anthem? I haven't recieve anything yet. I usually get it an hour after I pick it up. I also haven't recieve a preorder code for 2 of my games

Exactly. It's funny to read those idiots who actually think Best Buy and Amazon are harming themselves by getting rid of the 20%-off program. It's absolutely smart for them to do it. Physical games are going to start carrying premiums so why give discounts? The future of physical games is in limited print runs and special high-cost editions.

Publishers will make more off less-risky physical prints since they'll be printing less, and not have to share profits with retailers by selling to the rest of gamers through digital distribution.

Yeah, publishers will keep doing just fine. Gamers however will now be leasing games or paying monthly subscriptions to ... uh, lease games. What's not awesome about that?

My grandma bought me some Sesame Street NES game for Christmas when I was a kid...scarred me for life. Not sure if gift cards were a thing then lol

Days Gone would be nice to see on here but I know from the past PS4 exclusives do not get much love.
Yeah, figured out a while ago that most of the games with the $10 rewards are those that drop very quickly in price anyway - your standard AAA fare. Not surprised in the least Anthem and The Division 2 come with $10 rewards. It's a smart way to simultaneously combat fast depreciation and increase day 1 sales.

Decisions, decisions which to choose Pokemon sword or pokemon shield, can't honestly decide?
I typically go with the less popular title, simply because I expect more people I meet to have the other version (and that makes it easier to trade exclusives for me).

In this case, I preordered Shield.

Just recieved my 25% off online use only code from BB due to my GCU expiring in a few days. Put it towards the last game I'll ever get with GCU, Devil May Cry V. Between the 20% GCU, 25% coupon and $5 RZ cert I had, ended up paying only $30. C'mon Friday!!!

Yeah I think I will go with shield but I am waiting for more info before deciding.

There's really zero details yet, outside of the name and the 3 starters really. put them both in the save for later list and decide when things are actually known.
Yep. But how long can you wait to preorder before the offer expires?

That's been my reasoning as well. The facebook poll they posted had over 60% for sword.

what offer? the $10? once they put the offer up, i have never seen them drop it until launch. I have pre-ordered something a day before release and still got the $10.

Just via name, i'll go Sword.
