Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
I called my local best buy (i've never done game trade ins before) and they said they only accept games that were purchases from bb with a reciept as trade ins, however they said there were two stores near me that would take any games back in trade. called them and they said no deal currently for PSP vita deal @ $75 credit for psp...

can anyone else confirm this deal, seems like a good deal for an older psp
I went back to my local best buy today to find the guy who told me about it, couldn't find him though. Got the next best thing, found the gaming manager and a playstation rep. Playstation rep told me, never heard of it. Gaming manager chimed in and said they are doing a $100 trade in for the 3DS but he has not heard about the $75 trade in for PSP yet.

Why not get the unlocked? It will only cost you $2.99 if you activate it before you do your trade-in. Then you will have a whole year of benefits.

The gamer unlock bonus 10% stacks with the 50% making it a total of 60%.
10% of $120 is $12. So gamers unlock will only cost you $3 more basically.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to just go in first, unlock it, then go and trade my games in. Or can I ask them to unlock it at the same time? not a huge deal either way.

Easy. Just pay your $14.99 and if the gaming rep does the transaction right (scan your RZ card, scan the Unlocked brochure, etc) it should be active instantly. Also, don't forget to get a copy of the current magazine.

Nice, thanks for your help!

New new 50%+ bonus activates tomorrow so I plan on getting up and checking my games TIV (make sure they didn't go down) and then venture over there to do my trades and pre order my Vita.

Updated the OP. The 50% bonus for this week isn't on the site yet, so hopefully it's in their damn computer (unlike last time this happened).

It still isn't on bestbuytradein.com, which has spelled trouble before which is why I pointed it out. The 4 for $20 (or whatever it was) was advertised in the weekly ad, but didn't show up on bestbuytradein.com right away, then showed up with a different set of conditions, then got cancelled after a day or two of not working.

Not saying this will happen again, but until a few people confirm that it is working fine I felt it appropriate to put a note on it.

I can confirm it works with no issue. Walked in this morning, unlocked my RZ card and proceded to trade in all my games. Got 50% extra bonus for preordering diablo for $5 and 10% for my unlocked card for 60% bonus . Girl had no problems taking all my games and applying the discount.

My psvita fund is now full for launch
Can anyone tell me if the Diablo III Collectors Edition is part of the trade-in promotion?
Should be no issue. The employee simply has to check a box (radial dial, whatever) saying you are pre-ordering. The pre-order and the trade-in are not done in the same transaction.

Thanks, updated the OP. Still left a note about it not being on bestbuytradein.com currently though.

yeah the girl asked me which version i wanted to pre order, I just went with regular as I'll probably be canceling it in store anyway. Does anyone know if I can cancel from any best buy or do I have to go back to the one I did the original pre order? (I had to go to a BB further away as all the closer ones only did trades w/original BB recept)

Unlocked question here. The welcome coupons had a buy 2 new get one free under 39.99. Do all 3 games have to be $40 or under or just the free one?

I'm picking up kingdom of amalur and need to buy gunstringer for a birthday present. I thought if I buy both on Tuesday I could use the coupon and pick up a $39.99 title for free. Any problems with this plan?

You'd pay $39.99 for Gunstringer? You realize there's lots of codes on eBay going for less than $10 for the GonD downloadable version, and roughly $5 for Fruit Ninja?

Got denied the 50% last night in Sanford, FL

The rep called the help desk and he said they had a recording saying they were aware of the issue.

Manager came over and even said he knew about the ad but wouldnt manually adjust so I just left.

EDIT: Looks like all my values held, so they better take em today! lol

It's a birthday present, of course he wants give the game brand new...

You want him to give a download code on a piece of paper? Most of the E-bay auctions e-mail the code, barely any send the card.

So instead of answering the question you want to question my purchase?

And as the other poster stated, it's a birthday gift. For my 4th grade nephew. Think he would appreciate receiving a printed email for a gift?

(He should, but I it's not unexpected to spend 4x more for the illusion of a new item.) Not judging you or your nephew, but man, what is wrong with our society that we have to pay such a difference.

Was trading in some games and a macbook, the lady couldn't finish the trade in and said the system was down and to come back tomorrow or later today.
anyone know how often their system goes down? how long does it take to be back up?

There's nothing wrong with our society. There's absolutely nothing wrong with him wanting to give his nephew something physical to open instead of a redemption code. Nor is there anything wrong with people in general who want something physical and are willing to pay for it.

I don't mean physical vs digital. Where did I say that? I doubt his nephew cares. I just mean just because it's a gift, we spend so much more money.

Ok back to my original question. The buy 2 new get 1 free coupon, all 3 dont have to be under $40 right? Just the free one...?

Depends if they fixed the glitch with that coupon. But when most of us used it you buy 3 games under 39.99 and the cheapest (or last game scanned - if glitch still in the system) comes up free.

So if I buy amalur ($59.99) and a $39.99 game I won't qualify for the coupon because I spent too much?

This 50% promo when stacked with the card is perfect for me right now as I'm going to beat socom 4 today and the base value at bestbuy right now is 9 so with the 60% it would get me 14.40. with the gears 3 coupon that credit would get me a free gears 3. sweet :)

Does anyone know if they fixed the extra 50% trade-in bonus for this week? I have a shit ton of games to trade in, and it takes them forever to process as it is. If the pre-order bonus still isn't in their system yet, I'll wait.

I was denied Sunday but I went yesterday to a different location and it showed up just fine. It is also showing up on their web site in all the normal locations so I would say go for it.

So, if I can trade in the copy of MW3 that came packaged with the LE MW3 console (don't need the disc, since I already have the Elite edition), at the value that their trade-in tool currently shows ($25), that would give me $37.50 in credit towards Diablo 3. I can then pay $5 cash out of pocket for the preorder and use one of my $10 Reward Zone coupons to pay for the rest on launch day.

Thanks for posting this, I'll be trying it out as soon as I'm off work.

FYI it worked just fine. Free copy of Metal Gear HD collection is mine.

Went in today to trade a handful of PS3 games to put towards Diablo III, got the 60% bonus (including my 10% for my Reward Zone account)...and the guy just handed me my gift card and that was that. He didn't even bother to make me put any of the gift card towards a pre-order. So, I used it to pay off Kingdoms of Amalur in full. Thanks, Best Buy.

I stand corrected. I traded nearly 30 games, and was in/out of the store in like 15 minutes. Irvine, CA Best Buy does not fuck around.

always takes at least half an our at the south coast and westminster ones..

i traded 9 games today from xbox 360 and ps3 and walk out with $114.60
these where not new games some where like 3 years old some 2
i expected like $50 but with the 30% more and 10% for rzm and 20% for pre order it come out to $114.60

I traded 29 games (DS, 3DS, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii games), 50% bonus toward Diablo 3, but it came as a gift card that I could use as store credit.
I didn't have the Reward Zone Gamers Club Unlocked Membership, otherwise I could have earned an extra 10% (roughly $24 extra). Total was $243 in store credit.

Congrats, Best Buy. You now have my business for the next few months.

So if you bought the Unlocked for $15 you would have made $9 and enjoyed all the benefits for the next year. Why not?

Laziness is why. :( I bought Unlocked tonight, so that it wouldn't happen again. (I was told it takes about a week to kick in.)

They lied to you. If the transaction is done correctly the Unlocked perks are activated instantly.

Noted. $24 Lesson Learned. :) CAG's Remorse kicked in the minute I walked out of the store.
Thanks, klimb.

Don't kick yourself. The membership wasn't going anywhere. Not like passing on a game (or other) deal then going back to find out someone else bought it.
