Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
If I pick up a Vita, I'd probably get Modnation and Mortal Kombat first. Sucks the reviews for Resistance aren't that great, I'd love a good FPS on it. I have about $1,000 credit to Gamestop I was saving for a Wii U splurge but I'm pretty sour on it after E3. I might just pick up a Vita in the next few months. Still hoping to see a bundle by the end of the summer.
I guess I'm not the only one. I started watching the press conference already planning to buy a Wii-U on day 1. By the end of the press conference I didn't see any reason to own one. I'll probably get one down the line when there's a good CAG deal on it and there are some good Mario exclusives.

FYI: If you have the GOTY edition of Red Dead Redemption, I don't believe they ever added that to the trade value estimator. So you'll end up getting $5-6 for the GOTY edition or $10-12 after doubling it, which is pretty sucktacular unless you bought it during that Amazon $20 price sale lately.

Yeah, even for the vanilla version of RDR (which is what I have) $6 base is kind of low. Might be too good of a game to let go for only $12.60...

On the other hand, I just beat MW3 for the first time in under 6 hours. I will gladly trade that junk back in this week.

dunder - i never played the single player of mw3, but did you even give mp a chance?
im prestige 10 and at least 100 hours of mw3 mp, just give it a shot at least!

n yeah lots of the tivs plummet when they have dotd's etc. it is crazy how low tivs get for popular games that have been on sale, but then horrible games like venetica and rogue warrior still get $5.

MP is all play. I was thinking of trading it in and rebuying just so I can get some GC money back to use on some MS points.

I just started playing the game today and haven't touched the multiplayer yet. I don't plan to either, not out of spite or anything, but because I don't have or want to invest the time rank up in it when I have other games I want to play. I've dabbled in previous COD titles, but they don't resonate with me.

Story-driven games have become more important to me than competitive multiplayer. That said, I plan on thoroughly playing all aspects of Halo 4 this November. :bouncy:

Hi guys, I've never traded in a Nintendo DS game to Best Buy before, so I was wondering, does BB take cartridge only DS games? (Is this YMMV?)

Thanks!

n yeah lots of the tivs plummet when they have dotd's etc. it is crazy how low tivs get for popular games that have been on sale, but then horrible games like venetica and rogue warrior still get $5.
I actually hate MW multiplayer more than the single player and I am by no means a fan of the single player. I pick up the games, beat the hardest difficulty in 6 hours max (usually far less), spend most of it annoyed or bored (finding myself fluctuating between the both) and ultimately at the end saying, "well... that was basically the exact same game as last year." Then trading it back in right away. I basically got it for about $30 when it released (after price matching it) traded it back in for about $30. Only wasted my time on it. The only thing I ever enjoyed about the series was playing Spec Ops in MW2 for like the first hour with a buddy. We never actually played it again.

As for the new/popular games vs old crappy games, a lot has to do with supply. The sheer number of people trading in BF3, MW3, etc., is probably staggering, where as you can probably line up all the people who traded in Rogue Warrior last week and maybe, just maybe, it'd make it out the door of Best Buy (but only if the gaming counter is near the doors).
I hope Resistance Burning Skies gets added by the end of the week. I just beat the game over the weekend and...uh yeah lol
Maybe they forgot about it? LOL, Gravity Rush ($11) and Lollipop Chainsaw ($18) is there already and both are getting released today.

can u preorder a game with all the games traded in then return it for a giftcard/store credit? If so I would convert it to amazon credit

I'm not sure what you mean. You'll get a gift card after trading in the games.

Saw this at a local store, a huge stack of them actually. Calling this as 100% confirmed, updated the OP to reflect that.

Thanks for the update. Next game on the backlog to finish and dump is Shadows of the Dammed. Hopefully, I can rinse an repeat that about 8-10 times before this promo ends.

Great game. I loved it. Fun and hilarious to boot.
Damn, why doesn't BB list the trade-in price for Red Dead Redemption GOTY?
They used to do the GOTY versions separately but you can thank developers/publishers that put all of the DLC and other add-ons in one time use code form for that ending. The game has no additional resale value from the regular version when they do that and it seems that Best Buy has chosen to just ignore GOTY versions as separate items all together rather than pick and choose which ones are worth something more.
This thread is heaven.

Edit: Quick question guys, can you use the credit from this to buy PSN cards and the such?
It's a gift card, you could use it to buy Hilary Duff CDs if that's a what you're into.

u can use the credit on ANYTHING. I traded in tons of games last year and bought a 1080p 40'' LCD tv. And I have a question. Do you get the double trade value on any trades or do u have to make a pre order?

Fake. Not the photo, his heterosexuality.

No pre-orders needed right now for the trade in offer.

This is all so great to hear. Thanks guys!
Why would they?
I know Amazon TiVs go back up after awhile so I was wondering if Bestbuy does the same thing...

Has anyone gotten Best Buy to take Rock Band Unplugged for the PSP? It shows up as a 360 game for some reason on the online trade-in page. There were some problems when I took it to BB to trade in where they only offered me $1.00 for a "generic game".

Anyone had any issues trading in games to the BB in NYC? I remember people having issues when they started the trade ins without a receipt.

That's pretty weird. Honestly since it seems like an error, the best answer would be from them so you may have to call and see what they can do. Honestly, the game is probably 50cent. Ever since Vita came out, all PSP games that I've seen hit 50 cent.

Not sure which exact location you'll look for, but I suggest check BB's trade in store locator online. There it will show which stores accepts trade in with or without receipt. I know some stores need them cause of pawn laws. The site should tell you if your location does require them.

Some of their DS games also also mismarked. If you type in the game's UPC and the estimator comes up with a price you shouldn't have much of an issue. I mean, you may have to hope that you get a gaming employee who realizes there is no such thing as Rock Band Unplugged for 360 and that the error is obviously just a miss-classification of platform.

I remember back when trackmania for the Wii was a big flip from Gamestop the game showed up weird in the estimator but I asked the clerk if there were any other Trackmania games for the Wii, he said, "No, good point." and did the trade with no issue.

He was a really cool employee, but I guess he just didn't notice the "360" designation. I think it helped that he didn't have to look it up manually--the copy I got from GS was complete with the UPC on the back.

Has anyone had luck in reversing a ban from trading? About 2 months ago, I tried trading and got the dreaded message. Always was under the trade 3 limit, but didn't have much desire to fight it. Now, with the 100% bonus, I would like to see if anyone has had success.

Any BB in New York City but if you want specifics it's either the one in Union Sq or 23rd st. Going through the bins downstairs looking for stuff I can sell back and just want to know if anyone had issues selling games back to those BB.

Anyone know how to claim points on trade-ins after the fact? Twice now I've gone to BB to trade something and both times the employee incorrectly scanned my RZ card so that the points do not show up. If you use the claim missing points tool on the RZ website it only refers to physical receipts, not the printouts that you're given for trade-ins.

I've also missed out on two 10% trade-in bonuses but I'm sure there's no way to retroactively add this either.

Every trade-in I've done involved my giving the employee my phone number and I've received the 10% bonus nearly every time (the two occasions when I didn't were easily resolved).

You would think this would work but each time I do a trade-in they ask for my phone number several times. I've even had them scan my RZ card. Unfortunately my BB does all the trade-ins at customer service and those reps have no idea what the Gamer's Club Unlocked membership even does. Last time I had a manager tell me that the 10% discount ended last month.

Ah I see. Yeah my copy didn't have the cover and manual, just the UMD. Anyone by any chance have a scan of the front and back cover? When I type in the UPC for Rock Band Unplugged, the $4.00 listing shows up on the trade in site.

I was banned about 3 months after a lot of others were getting banned. I personally haven't fought it but I know a few people said they did (via phone) and were able to get it reversed. I think that is definitely a YMMV. There is also a BB trade in customer service phone # on their web page now.

QUESTION: If I purchase Visa gift cards with cash, do those purchases go towards obtaining silver status?

No issues, traded in a bunch of old games. Thanks for posting this OP.

Only problem was my copy of NBA 2K12 is a bootleg, according to the BestBuy rep. I bought it used from GameStop back in December. Anyone have any serious advice on what to do about it?
