Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

Also, I noticed by the gaming counter they had the Max Payne 3 special edition for $34.99. Almost bought it for the statue, but the TIV after the promo is $26. Really didn't want to pay $10 for the statue.

I tried trading in 4 games and the rep told me the tiv already included the 100% bonus. So i decided to keep them.

The statement is a lie.
The statement is a lie.
On the inside I was lik wtf, might as well keep them. I said thank you anyway and took my games back. El Shaddai xbox360 I got for $10 brand new from best buy a while back, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 xbox 360 I got brand new from gamestop ages ago for $10, Qubed xbox360 I got for $7.98 from Toy's R Us during there save 10% or 20% off already marked down games, Naruto Shippuden Clash of the Ninja III Wii was a $5 deal at fivebelow(,it was still sealed until I opened it to trade in.)
Traded in Skyrim for $33.60. Will likely re-buy it when there is a $30 sale on the inevitable GOTY edition.
I got the exact same for my skyrim. Did yours include the 10% bonus for unlocked members because I thought I was supposed to get more than 33
Just had a lengthy visit to BB (Seekonk, MA) which began with the trade in system being down. Any normal promotion, I can come back another day, but I did attempt to escalate the inquiry due to the time sensitive nature of trade-in promotions and values updating in the system.

Just as the manager was telling me I was SoL, the system came back up and we were go for launch. All prices I checked out online this morning still held true, so I was thrilled.

To get rid of NBA2k11 for $6 (x2 = $12), The Bigs 2 for $5 (x2 = $10), among other titles that have been absolutely rotting, the promotion was pretty kickass.

I did experience an issue with the unlocked + 10% trade-in that they simply would not give me. I escalated to a manager there and told them it applies to all and it is actually a benefit of paying for an unlocked membership. They told me sometimes the system picks it up, sometimes it doesn't - so my educating them didn't seem to help

They explained to me that with a promotion that is so good at 100%, they would consider it 'double dipping' to toss another 10% on top - completely illogical explanation but I had already been there an hour. They referred me to their 1-888 number and /or online customer service for an adjustment if I still wanted to pursue.

Never ceases to amaze me how YMMV even SAME STORE best buys are. Christ, last month an awesome sales associate even subbed in a used Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning because they were out of new copies, to stack with the sale/coupon to make it $10.

I guess for an extra $12 I need to take to the customer service channels.

Way too long of a post, but for an added laugh... the manager did tell me that his hands were completely tied with the system being down, and it would benefit me to hold off in case my games were worth more tomorrow.... 100% trade-in promotions usually don't drive prices up, but maybe I just live in fantasy land.
I always have the same issue at my best buy, no matter what i try to tell them they say its not included, when i attempt to trade a few things in this week and they say no im absolutely going to call customer service this time as i've lost out around $20 so far from this happening to me.

How can they tell you that the promotion is not valid yet or that the TiV estimator already includes the 100%? Doesn't the computer automatically add the 100% extra? Or do they override the price to lower the amount you get?

It's a radio button they have to click on for the promotion.
Already paid and pre-ordered for Fifa 13 (gotta love that $20 for GCU Promo) so I'm probably gonna dump off Fifa 12 while its still $10 base ($21 with unlocked). Anyone else think this could drop before the promo is over?
Slightly off topic but im always amazed at how well fifa holds its value.

I get it and trade it in every year after EPL/Champions league is over and always get back 20 to 30 bucks for it.

Plus the damn thing like never goes on sale.

Lol me too I traded my FIFA for $40 cash at one of my local mom and pop type game stores a couple months ago

I NEVER see Fifa go on sale, but yeah I am surprised too, even though the 100% is said to go until October I got rid of it for the $21, better safe than sorry.

I had a few games I was going to trade-in, but they were only giving me $1 or $2. Even with the 100% bump it's not worth it. $4 is the lowest I'll go.

I've pretty much scrapped the bottom though and there isn't much left I'm willing to trade-in now. I got $110 from Best Buy today and that was trading in some titles I might regret, where as usually I know I'm done with them.

Thinking the same thing.. Might part without Skyrim prior to completing the main quest, too. The Bethesda effect is wearing off and everything feels like a fetch quest after 60 hours in.

Traded in $110 worth of games today, but the employee forgot to give me the extra 10% for being in gamers unlocked club. anyone ever had this happen and have any luck going back to get them to give the extra 10%?

You guys are doing it wrong. You buy games cheaply from Best Buy, sell them for a profit at Gamestop, then buy games from Gamestop, and sell them for profit at Best Buy. You can turn $50 of Best Buy credit into $100 of Best Buy credit like that.

I still can't believe the 10% isn't automatically added. Or at least the employees trained.
Or maybe they forgot. :bomb:

Lost out on a few dollars due to trading in a few games during the 50% bonus period. Didn't think 100% would be coming back. Looking at my collection, I *think* don't have anymore games I'd want to trade in.

It happened once the last time I traded. When I had them scan the rewards card, it didn't go through and I got a gift card without the extra 10%. The idiot manager didn't even know about the 10%, saying that it was an expired promotion. After I got her to understand what the promotion was, we re-did the transaction. This time, I gave them the number I had registered for the account and it worked. But for some reason, no matter how many times the card was scanned, it would not work. As for you, you might be out of luck, since I don't think you can go back and get it after leaving. Although if you encounter a smarter manager who knows what they are doing, then maybe.

I guess I should have been paying more attention myself, I was listening to him talk about how he got caught hacking in black ops and was hired by Sony to test multiplayer aspects of Starhawk. Had a feeling he might have forgot something after I got home and sure enough, no 10%.

I always check, because it says how much you get on that printout.

And if the cashier is working for Sony, testing multiplayer aspects of Starhawk, what is he doing working at Best Buy? Seriously?!
Was the regular 3DS ever on sale? I know they've had bundle deals (or buy a 3DS get X for free) in the past but I never remember a legit sale on the system itself. You might be waiting a while for that 3DS XL sale. I'm just waiting for it to come with something more useful than a generic case. If they can offer some screen protectors and a case actually meant for the XL, I'll bite. I'll even take a gift card with purchase deal too. I'm not picky.

Sucks about the trade system being down. My local stores take so long to do trade-ins anyway I can only imagine what it was like when the system wasn't working properly.
I bought my 3DS at BB last X-mas season, for 169.99 and got a $50 gift card with the purchase. It was def not on Black friday-the week after as I recall.

I call shenanigans on this one. It clearly states on one of their pages that the 10% is an ADDITIONAL add on. Right at the top of the page it says so.

I've got a handful of used games from the $4.99 Hollywood Video sale a couple years ago and several of them have the "instructions" on the back instead of a proper back cover. Anybody have issues trading these to Best Buy? Would like to unload a few of them where I could get back a dollar or two more than what I paid.

They shouldn't, but if you want to be safe, just take off the paper and trade the game in with only the case. They will have to manually key in the game title, but they won't penalize you for it.

More like he was in the beta and wanted to make himself sound cooler. Best Buy is starting to get almost as bad as GS when it comes to dumb employees.

30 old DS games = $214

Traded in to get a new printer with a BB pm but joke on me as they do not carry the model I was seeking...

Trade took forever, at least 45 minutes, but the young man was nice...
haven't traded in months... amazed it still takes sooo loooong ....

Correct. I got this deal too. It was the same week as B2G1 on games. It was definitely after black friday.

Might have to try and see if my ban has been lifted, save my sister the trouble.

The RZ card never seems to scan properly for the 10% extra, you almost always need to use your phone number. I've had that problem a few times, luckily I have mostly intelligent helpful employees at the best buys near me that have figured that out.

Never let the manager bull shit you out of the 10% extra. Ask them for GCU information (or possibly grab a copy of the magazine cause it usually has an ad) and point to it. Hell, call up corporate customer service right there in the store and ask to talk to a gaming rep; doesn't hurt to just press the "all extensions" option and tell them that you're a gamer's club unlocked paid member and a local store manager is refusing to give you the 10% trade in bonus that comes with your paid membership and that you would like someone to inform him that he is trying to cheat a customer. Be a little stubborn, but not an outright dick. Manager will likely cave in and give you the 10% that comes with your paid membership before the rep on the other end even answers their phone (they don't want that ending up on file).

Again, don't be a dick (least not anymore than you have to be), but don't let a manager make up his own rules and screw you out of what legitimately comes with your paid membership.

Now, if you aren't a GCU member and you do any of this there is a special place in hell for you.

Got mine in the same deal. Ended up trading in the free game and Zelda (which came with my 3DS) back in and basically getting my 3DS for like $100 in gift cards.

Thanks for the input. I'll try with the games as they are first and do disc-only if I absolutely have to.

Also, I know the OP says that GCU won't show up on your Reward Zone membership for 48 hours or more but is it possible to sign up for GCU and get the 10% bonus on trades immediately afterwards?

I tried this when I signed up for GCU in June. It wouldn't go through. The guy told me it hasn't updated in their system yet because, as you said, it took up to 48 hours. If it was instant, you would get the 10% right away.

Bah...was hoping maybe the employee could do an override. Now to debate over whether to trade tomorrow without GCU or wait until it becomes active in the system and hope TIVs don't plummet.

Yeah, I forgot how long it takes to trade in too since this was my 3rd time trading in games at Best Buy since the program started. It took almost 20 minutes for me to trade in 14 games. I guess I am used to TRU where it takes less than 5 minutes to trade in games even if you have a stack of games. I'd hate to be there with a trade in if there were already others also waiting for their trade ins to be processed.

I did it at my local store. Basically got the magazine sub for free after trading in a ton of games during the first 100% promo..

As long as you don't sign the paper they hand out, you can always deny what you see there. Luckily it was only 2.50 lost.

I didn't know that, I'll remember that next time and I'll ask them to tell me the values as they scan the games. I didn't think that was necessary since I had always thought the values in store match online but I guess that isn't the case all the time.

Yeah, usually they do but sometimes (pretty rare) the TiV's don't reflect the online ones.

Just wait until they print out the final papers, and before you sign do a quick glance on each game. The very first trade I ever did with BB was during last 100% trade-in where I took in 14 games. Pretty hard to remember all those TiV's, so I just did a quick glance on all the TiVs to see if they were right, and I ended up signing the paper without noticing they didn't count one of my games until I got home. Forgot exactly what they did, but they screwed up and added the 10% to the total trade in, instead of doing the 110% for each game thus I received about $22 extra which was similar to what UC3 was going for at that time.

Lol, luckily I was able to call back, catch the guy who traded the games for me and went the next day to get the credit for the other game.

One thing I've noticed is that they seem to forget to add the 10% for GCU quite a lot, or atleast over here anyways they do. A chick from CS one time took my trade in for me and she told me that they didn't need the RZ card to add the 10%, she said that simply with my phone # she could look it up and add the 10% manually. Turns out that she either screwed up (probably cause we were flirting) or it didn't work that way with the GCU.

So I went my merry way, thinking everything went smoothly, but decided to check my TiVs before leaving the store, and yup sure enough no 10% on anything lol. So I've started making a habit of checking the papers now just to make sure everything gets added even if they tell me they don't need my RZ card.
