Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

all visa gift cards have activation fees. That's how they get money. Its basically a credit card but instead of being charged interest you pay a fee up front.

Are you saying it ends 9/1 for sure or that next weeks ad extends it to 9/1?

Guess I won't be able to finish all the games I wanted then. Hopefully I can get through 3 more before end of next week.

Just to let some CAGs know that they got copies of Men in Black: Alien Invasion for xbox 360 for $13.50 after promo at gohastings.com...trades into best buy for $24 after 100% promo and a lil more if your unlocked member

They have prepaid visa cards, which you can put anywhere from $20-$200 on. It has an activation fee of $5.95 though. I've gotten these 3 times with $200 each already from credit. You need to register them online though so you can use them online.
Is there any way to check if a BB carries Visa Gift cards? I've asked at two BBs and both say they do not carry them and I have been unable to find them in store. There's a few more in Vegas but they are kind of far to me. I might just end up buying Kindle cards for textbooks this semester but straight up cash can be useful.

I don't think you could track it but maybe someone knows? As soon as the "game department" started up in my store they moved them into a cardboard box behind the returns counter. I can still buy them but have to wait in a long ass line to get one.

Edit: also the wife got denied once for trying to convert gift cards labeled "Trade-In" on the front.
This happened to me before (I got cheated out $30 because the employee failed to tell me he was entering them as generic). I literally had to complain to a manager for half an hour to get the difference back (this was right after it had happened). Basically, from what they told me, they cannot "undo" a trade - once it's complete, it's impossible to refund. Eventually, they just gave me a giftcard with the difference.
It is important to always ask the employees to go over the values before you finalize the trade-in. They tried to give me a generic sku for a Halo game on the 360 because the inexperienced employee couldn't find it in the system and said it wouldn't scan when brought up. Eventually I told them what to exactly type in and it came up right away and I got the full, correct value for the game.

You know how you get around all this for a big trade?

Go to the BB site, add the items to your cart. Then print that out for the employee. "These are the base values I got online, just let me know if anything changed."

I traded in some old wii game for 114. At first I through it is weird and it turn out the customer service people didn't set mine as gamer unlock even through I mention I am unlocked.

It probably didn't help I was send to customer service to do my trade in instead of the trade in station. Think I should complain on the best buy forum?

I never thought of that. I just write down the games before I leave my house and what they should each be worth after bonus and add it up. If it doesn't match, I dig deeper.
you don't have a printer? much easier.
I do have a wireless one on the other floor, but I haven't bothered networking it yet. I only trade about 6-10 games at a time, so it is quicker for me to write them out. I do all the math on a spreadsheet that compares GSs current offers against BBs to determine where to trade them in. I spend more time calling GS to check TIVs than anything. ;)

Ok, so I was banned long ago from bby for trade ins. I did a lot. I mean a lot a lot. Now I went in other day an my gf was trading in some of her old wii games. The store manager was staring us down and sent people over to check on her. Made my gf feel like crap. So she got her giftcard and left.

So today I go in and confront the manager about this. I'm told to my face I've stole thousands from the company, and I'm not allowed to trade in baned. I told her it was my gf doing trades not me. Again, then I'm told I was told by district LP I can't trade. So I told her I never was. Anyhow after this I leave.

She then goes on to tell my friend that works there that I'm a felon, and I'm under investigation and crap. I'm seriously annoyed right now. She was slandering me to who all knows who, and calling me a felon? Sure all the trades may be frowned apon, but it's not a felony. I only did what the system left me.

Anyone else who was a major flipper get this treatment, and or threaten you are under investigation? I want to call her HR and complain about slander, but I'm wondering if I should just drop it? Anyone?

How much were you flipping? I've done only 2k or so and evenly space it out between 4 different stores. I've yet to run into any major problems.

If this is all true I would absolutely report her. A felony is a serious crime and telling people you are a felon for trading in games while following the rules is definitely not ok.

I'm curious how they "checked" on your GF though. They checked her ID or something?

Ok let's see. First question, I think about 2000-3000 in about a 6month span. The second question, she had employees come over and look at her stack of games. She told people in store she wanted to ban her also. They had about 3 employees in the store blatantly standing around and watching her. I'm talking like 20feet out. Like she had just pocketed a cd or something.

Now I find out she was telling people I was trading in after my ban at other stores with a fake ID. This is absolutely false. I've never owned a fake ID in my life lol. Should I just call and complain to HR? Or what should I do?

Make a customer complaint and not shop/trade there again. Why gain credit to a store that treats you like this?

1.5k here and no problems either. Plus LOTS more with my other goons LOL. *knocks on wood*

Honestly, that sucks the manager would do that to you kingwormer. I'd kindly tell that manager to go blow it out of their ass; your girl trading in games has nothing to do with you. But, look at it from their perspective.

They may have never seen a banned message pop up before and judging from the other users posts, it talks about how Loss Prevention prevents you from trading in, so they may think you're "stealing" when you're obviously not.

The best thing you can do is let it go. Most likely the manager was talking out of their ass. Maybe if you call Best Buy CS about how they harrassed your girlfriend in the store you can get the manager in the hot seat. Get his name first.

I definitely would, that is just fucking nuts. Even if you were banned, i'd imagine HR doesn't tolerate stuff like this.

I definitely abuse trade ins, price adjust all the time, do return/rebuys, everything you can think of and everyone at my BB bends over backward to help me achieve this. I've even had them let me use expired coupons for games they didn't have in stock when they finally showed up, and they have ordered stuff for me and told me to return/rebuy to get the deal I was after. This probably won't last forever but I do spend a lot there, and I can't imagine them treating my GF or I like that.

Stories like this are a big reason why I don't get into the flipping game.

I'm absolutely not going back to this best buy again. I plan to make a formal complaint, I'm just not sure to whom. If I truly am banned, wont my opinion not matter?
I would call and complain. However, in the future, you may want to diversify into several locations.
She already accused me of doing this with a fake ID. It's utterly retarded. My real wonder is, can they actually be trying to investigate me and do something about it? Or in a greater scale, to all of us?

Unless you literally stole something and they have proof, nobody can do a thing to you. Taking advantage of killer deals is not a crime. You never tricked anyone or stole anything if all you did was trade in games.

Hell, even back when the Kmart coupons were being exploited in mass quantities, nobody ever got in trouble because they hadn't broken any rules.

No ones going to look for you, calm down. Unless someone reported ALL the games you traded in missing from their collection, as in you stole it, then they will not waste their time going after you. They ban you and that's it.

To reply to both of you, nope I have proof of purchase for all my games. Bought off Amazon, so there is a full paper trail. Never stole a thing. Just used there trade in system to my advantage in a way I saw to make some quick money.

Why not stop trading in games at Best Buy and/or stop shopping at Best Buy? Obviously they figured out you're exploiting a loophole by continuing their trade-in program through your girlfriend. They're just upset and talking shit on you which will amount to nothing. The way their policies are set up, they really can't stop people who are banned from using their friends/family to do their trade-ins for them. So the typical CAG will say it's their fault for such a lenient policy. If it technically isn't against the rules, then let's fuck it to oblivion is the CAG motto.

I mean if they really hurt your feelings, go ahead an issue a complaint. Mention the slander, but don't mention the profit.

Sounds like you're getting your alibi ready. Don't worry dude, she was just trying to scare you away, which admittedly worked, judging by your past posts. The manager can't do anything about your girlfriend trading in, as itsoverninethousand mentioned, so the next best thing they could do is run their mouth. I'd suggest finding another Best Buy to do your business if possible, as it sounds the both of you are not welcome there.

I guess what really irked me was, it really wasn't me using her. She was dumping off some of her crappy old Wii games. Had absolutely nothing to do with me. I even told the manager that when I confronted her. I told her it was her trading in her old games. She then said "how was I supposed to know that, we can just ban her also". I told her, maybe if you walked over and asked? Or had the people you sent over to ask, that's how you would know? She got pissed when I said this.

I am done shopping there, mainly because ofmhowmitmmade my lady feel. And yes I know the CaG "motto" lol, but that wasn't this case.... At this time. I guess I really wanted to post my experience to see if anyone had had similar situations? And or if anyone had actually gotten in trouble.

I know people on here have made way way way more than I did. So was really just trying to ease my mind, and vent, and let people know the treatment I got.

Lol, not getting an alibi ready. Was just answering what was asked. Guess I am glad that exist though just in case?

Really? What became of that? I can't even imagine how that isn't went.

I mean, what could the actually have been looking for? Unless they honestly though, or had it reported, he stole the games?

Nothing else was posted about it from him afterwards so in the end it seemed like it was just a scare tactic to get him to cut down. But he had receipts for everything so I think they figured he was just a flipper instead of a thief.

I think you'll be fine. It wouldnt make sense to make public threats like that. The other guy was blindsided by the police visit however. So a lot of us just guessed that a BB manager had reported him to the local authorities privately.

they do not need a valid legitmate reason, they can just blacklist/ ban you from the store, and have security escort you out. it has happened, corporate bb cannot really do not much about that

Alrighty guys, thank you for listening to me vent, and offering your words. Eased my mind, and such. Thank you all. Sorry if this rant bothered anyone.

Yeah but it's weird that the police were involved, unless he stole the games there's no reason why best buy should have called the police

Read the old BBY threads if you you really want the full story. You did nothing illegal, so why are you even worried? "A clear and innocent conscience fears nothing." The employees saw something they deemed bad right in front of their eyes and are powerless to do anything about it. So they say some stupid shit to deter you. They aren't handling it the best way, but they are just trying to protect their company. You really want them to potentially lose their jobs over it? They're not bad people. You know the reasons behind their actions. They aren't haphazardly fucking over random customers. Oh wait, you prefer indifferent, glassy-eyed employees who just go through the motions ringing you up. The ones that don't ask questions or are incapable of being pro-active. Those employees are great, aren't they?

As I said I'm saying that all my trade ins weren't frowned on. I'm just upset with the treatment she got. They can treat me however, that was always my deal. I knew I wasn't breaking any laws or whatnot. So even though it was frowned on by managers, the employees loved my trade ins. It helped them rank really high when that was a major push for bby.

@kingwormer - if you were trading in lots of games, they could make the argument that they suspected they were stolen and have the police investigate you. Could. Doubt they would. And part of that investigation would be you showing the police your receipts and that would be that.

But there's a reason there's are pawn shop laws and procedures. It's to catch petty thieves and while the police have other things to do, they're supposed to investigate if it's a credible tip.

Even in those cases where people are banned(coughcoughmefromGScoughcough), if they were simply exploiting a trade in or store policy and the employees were ok with it, I don't see why a higher up should get involved.

This is what pisses me off the most about my GS ban, in that I had managers' approval to do the trades I was doing at the time. Even all of the flyers n shit for Gamestops' trade promotions say 'subject to managers' approval' or something to that effect.

Same thing goes with the penny guides that their DM was pissed at me for almost constantly getting in large numbers from stores in his district. If the employees knew they were supposed to be pulled and saw them ring up a penny they could have said NO to letting me grab them. But many of the employees would simply tell me it's my lucky day or whatever and scan the thing outta their system and hand it to me. Not my fault his employees weren't doing their jobs or their system doesn't make a 'DO NOT SELL' prompt come up.

I am really considering trying to petition even higher up people at GS for a reversal of this ban since I still feel it's bullshit. Of course, if I did, I'd probably want their DM fired for his unprofessional and downright rude behavior towards me before I'd even consider stepping foot in one of their stores again.;)
