In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.
You inspired me to take a moment and count out what I currently have, keep in mind that I've traded in a ton of my own games the past few months.

I have exactly 155 Xbox 360 games (including 5 compilation disc with multiple games - i.e. Xbox Live Arcade Compilation, Dreamcast Collection, etc.). (I've also got 5 Xbox games, a dozen SNES and NES games and roughly 200 N64 games - but I collect the N64 games). Of that 155, 12 are games I have zero intention of ever getting rid of. 4 games in that collection have been beaten but I've held on to them for a while either due to it not being worth trading or because my nephew likes playing them etc. So all told, my back log of Xbox 360 games is 139.

Fun side note, I kept having to come back and update my total game count cause I kept finding games in drawers, under magazines, etc.
My gosh

Just for fun I calculated your minimum TIV for current gen systems for Xbox 360 games. I believe it is $2. If so, if you traded in all of those games with a 60% bonus you'd get a minimum $444.80 (before your courtesy $5 preorder towards Skyrim/MW3). So that's a net of $439.80 and of course mind you that's if you have nothing but a ton of Gears of War 1 titles laying around which I'm sure you don't and in that case your TIV has to AT LEAST be $1,000 minimum we're talking here.

My finder's fee is $444.80 by the way. A new PS Vita would be nice. Oh yeah, you're welcome ;)
you people just need to do some calculating and if the $5 you're spending on the preorder is not worth the extra 20% (cause there's 3 for 30%) then don't do the preorder. Consider it the cost of doing business.

For pete's sake, don't cancel your preorders.

IATCG - they fully expect people to change their minds. But not about 5 preorders at a time. Or 9 out of 10 preorders. Especially if every preorder was to get a trade in bonus.
I cancelled Catherine because they didn't have the artbook/soundtrack damn near guaranteed by everybody else(including their own website) and the rest I cancelled because I changed my mind when I saw Amazon offering the promo creds on the same games.

I still have Gears 3(no 360 but intended to sell it to a buddy of mine, who already has it:bomb:), Uncharted 3(bought it from Amazon) and Skyrim pre-orders outstanding. I'm still debating on Skyrim, but I have more than enough credit leftover at BB to pick it up should I so choose.

So far besides the Catherine PO, I think I've cancelled like 3-4 of them(and yes they were all with the 50% or so promos at the time).

Am I 'gaming the system'? Not really, since I had every intention of picking them up, but if someone offers me a much better deal(gc vs DLC, gc will win EVERY TIME) I'm gonna cancel them and that's that.

I could always do what I used to at GS to assure the employees got their 'numbers' for the PO's and buy them at launch to fulfill the PO's and then just return them to another BB. However, both the cancellation of PO's made with promos and returning PO's were two of the reasons I was given by the GS DM for my perma-ban from there(among other things they thought made me a 'bad customer').

But to me if you're in the business of selling games and taking pre-orders, you have to account for a certain percentage of cancellations. People change their minds, but apparently according to these companies that's not allowed or you're doing something wrong.

Unfortunately I am a customer who FREQUENTLY gets buyer's remorse(even when buying games at thrift stores for $2-3), so between BB's change in return policies(requiring ID for them) to them apparently cracking down on returned pre-orders I have a feeling that BB is soon to join GS in banning me. Personally I really don't care at this point since I'm sick of the junior detectives who I've encountered.
yeah but it was 5 of them so it was more like $25..

anyway if they want to give people a hard time about it and if its that big of a deal, they should just stipulate that the full value of your trade ins have to be applied to a pre-order for the bonus and then apply the bonus during the transaction with the purchase of the game.
I gotcha and I'm not trying to flame you here specifically. I'm just trying to point out that anytime anybody tries to cancel a preorder after said preorder was giving them a bonus TIV bump, any rationale employee will notice something is off. For the CAGs that may partake in this practice, fair warning. If you take a risk gaming the system you gotta be okay with dealing with the consequences. Gotta have it both ways.

Yep.

And in response to IATTCG: I'm sure 0 of your "legitimate" cancelled preorders were for a 50% bonus right?

I never got my question answered by IATCG can you confirm the UPC for the Uncharted 3 you ordered from Amazon? I have 711719823322
Yep.

As said above, most of my pre-order cancellations were from trades I did towards a promo. Why is it that people automatically assume a cancellation isn't legit if you used a promo to get more credit for the games you were trading in?

But again, I can't help it that Amazon was offering a better 'bonus' for the purchase of the games I already PO'd with BB and that I switched my PO or purchase to there from BB. Originally any credit I was getting from straight trades(did a couple 200-300 dollar ones before they even started promos) was going directly to buying Kindle cards. At least I started trying to keep the credit with BB.
I never got my question answered by IATCG can you confirm the UPC for the Uncharted 3 you ordered from Amazon? I have 711719823322
That's the same UPC as the one I ordered from Amazon. I think the UPC's may be the same because there's no pack-in DLC codes.

Personally, I have not and don't plan to out and out cancel any pre-order. Most of my pre-orders thus far I've either 1) actually wanted, 2) had more than one copy on purpose because my brother wanted the game as well, or 3) still picked up and just flipped back to BB within a week or two (before the drop in new release TIV to $25, I was close to breaking even with those so I didn't mind). For the extra pre-orders that I have now, I'll either not cancel them and just take the $5 as a more than acceptable cost for a great deal, or I'll do what I've done a couple of times so far which is to exchange one pre-order for another. I figure an exchange (which the gaming employees handle for me) draws a lot less attention than an outright cancellation.
I figure an exchange (which the gaming employees handle for me) draws a lot less attention than an outright cancellation.
Only problem is that they have to refund(do a return) the $5 PO deposit FIRST, which may count against the 'return limit' bullshit they started where they require an ID for a WITH RECEIPT return.

Like I said, I'm a customer who gets buyers remorse a LOT, so this new policy sucks a big fat veiny one for me.

Not counting a couple of instances where I have had to cancel a pre-order and then re-preorder it because of something else (such as when I wanted to take advantage of getting the Saints Row Double Pack for $10 with pre-order of SR3. I already had SR3 pre-ordered so I had to cancel and re-preorder to get the deal), I have cancelled 4 pre-orders since I started trading massive amounts of games and basically been doing all of my electronic shopping at BB. Madden 12 and NBA 2K12 were admittedly pre-orders I never planned to pick up. Rage... I had meant to, but then I figured out I wouldn't make the 5 for $100 deal even if I did and as the game neared release I just got less and less interested in it. The 4th one was Batman Arkham City which I only cancelled because I won a copy for free.

I did return a couple of them at a Best Buy I pretty much never go to. Mostly cause I really like the people in my nearest BBY's gaming department and I didn't want to hurt their numbers. I will be picking up at least 3 pre-orders before the month is out though.

Oh and Donut, I had yet another game I missed before. It was still in a Best Buy bag so I missed it. heh. I've actually started using "howlongtobeat.com" to keep track of my backlog and plan what games to play next based on their average time to completion. (I only have a small fraction of my total games on there and the estimated time is 12 days and 21 hours to beat them, but the backlog screen always seems to pick the highest submitted time rather than the average). I'd go and look up the total TIV of all those games but the online cart would probably time out before I was done.

Does the in store online tracker take longer to adjust? That one still lists 20.00 (as opposed to bestbuytradein.com, which is 14 now) . Hope the game isn't too long, wanted to play it over the weekend and put it towards picking up mw3.

Yeah they are really killing the TIVs tonight. Tons of shit dropped and not just the higher TIVs. Lots of the $5-7 TIVs are down in the $2-3 range now.

What exactly happened here? I read a few pages back and didn't find it out. Did anyone cancel too many preorders and then got banned from BBY?

Wow, I'm interested to learn more about this too. I forgot all about bestbuytradein.com. I've been using this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Video-G...es/pcmcat232900050010.c?id=pcmcat232900050010 which takes much longer to update apparently.

Is this correct?

Exactly - which is why I have the first one bookmarked and the second I try to forget even exists ;).

I wish those Kinect games were so cheap at my Targets as I'd just want a few to try out. All those games were $39.99+ at 2 stores I went to. But realistically, Gunstringer and Fruit Ninja is probably all I really need for now.

Hey io, some of those games were listed at $39.99+ at my Target (namely GTA IV Complete for PS3), but they rang up $19.99 (ie, 13.33). Give it a try.

Thanks io. I've been using the bad one for a while now and it screwed me over on a few occasions. I learned my lesson now.

I'm going to head out soon and try to get a few of those kinect 19.99 games at target if there are any left. I don't even have a kinect, but I will probably buy one on black friday. Target's 90 day return policy is my fallback option if I get buyers remorse.

Will probably finish Batman today and trade it in.

I'd get 37.00 for it, and since it's part of my buy 5 get 100.00 back it was like a cheap, long rental.
So are we gonna get more info on the banned gamefly dude?
I dont have anything really to add. I talked to the Game guy for a second about it, he said this guy had been ordering all the penny guides online for instore pickup, so maybe he triggered something else, or the store flagged him in some way. He was Asian and about mid 20's, it wa at the Westminister store.

it's tracked by your driver's license so this guy is banned at every store. ouch. he screwed himself out of all future BB trade in's which at this point is way better than Gamestop and even Amazon still.

if i cancel my skyrim pre order will my trade in credit stay the same? or will they deduct my 50% bonus?
thinking of cancelling my pre-order since BB wont be having any deals for it and just get an amazon gift card or something
all the decent kinect game flips (and GTA IV) from target are still holding. tomorrows the last day for the B2G1 also.
Thanks to everyone who posted about the Kinect deals. I didn't know about it until today.

I bought the Uncharted 3 Collectors Edition, Batman Arkham City Collectors Edition. I ended up having $50 leftover that I'll put towards COD MW3 Hardened edition on Tuesday.

I ran into huge problems at BB today. My Gamers Unlocked isn't working even though I bought 2 subscriptions. I bought the subscriptions right before Gamers Unlocked was available, but I got the 2 letters in the mail and upgraded my account to Gamers Unlocked. For some reason, it didn't work because I don't get 10% on trades. The Computer System says I don't have Gamers unlocked. I spent a few couple hours on customer service. They said they escalated the situation and that one of the higher ups will get back to me within 7-10 business days. They also are giving me 500 reward zone points ($10) for the trouble.

Has this happened to anyone else here? (buying subscription, but unable to get 10%). Also, I only recieved 1 magazine for September and October (rather than 2 copies that I paid for).

Anyone have advice is a customer service representative can't fix it?
Hey io, some of those games were listed at $39.99+ at my Target (namely GTA IV Complete for PS3), but they rang up $19.99 (ie, 13.33). Give it a try.
Oh, I got that one. It is the Kinect stuff that is apparently YMMV. I didn't even see those games that sonic traded in. All their "Price Cut" signs were for $39.99 .

Is this story originating from some other thread? And what does Gamefly have to do with it?

I'm guessing the dude bought more than 3x of the Gamefly nightly sales things, or is that not it?

A funny (and kinda sad at the same time) thing happened at bb today while I was doing trade ins this lady walks in and picks up a copy of black ops and I said to myself "nooo don't pay 59.99 for a year old game" gladly she put it back down. However what follows afterward is a clear example of bestbuy adapting gamestops tactics to take advantage of uninformed soccer moms to make a extra few bucks.

Customer: Hi I'm looking for a cod game for my son. Which one would be a good one to start with ? (Ah remember the days before the real world hit us as young adults when outlr parents would spoil us lol)

At this point she picked up cod 4 (best of the series imo) and the rep told her

Rep: ohhh no you don't want that one cause its been hacked. You should try mw2 as its never been hacked

NEVER BEEN HACKED ? ! I almost screamed out loud "you fucking liar its been hacked forever !!!!"

Customer: ohhh 39.99 ? That's cheaper than usual. Thanks a lot for your recomendation !

I almost went into full cag mode to help her make a much better decision as mw2 clearly isn't worth 39.99 but I'm cool with the manager and some of the employes there so I didn't want to mess up the sale. Instead they managed to get 10 extra dollars cause of a lie. Sigh ........ soccer moms :(

I went to 4 targets today and those 3 games I mentioned were all $19.99 at all 4 stores. I didn't price check some of the other reported ones, but I saw Kinectimals (regular edition) marked $19.99 and Joyride marked $19.99 at a couple stores. I didn't price check Kinect Sports, but maybe I should have.

I wouldn't have spent my time and energy flipping today, but I'm buying Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition at BB no matter what next week. I couldn't help but build up a little credit, but then I squandered it on UC3 and Batman CE's really fast.

we need these people to keep buying crap for way to much. otherwise these stores could not afford to offer good discounts for us to abuse. I always try to help the guy at gamestop sell a preorder to the idiots in line in front of me.

me: yeah you better get madden preodered. they sold out last year and this year has tons of new features

I guess I see what you are saying. Oh and lmao at that maiden preorder recomendation. If I was the guy you told that to I would have said "are you fucking nuts or something ? madden is the same crap every year. I'll wait for it to hit 20". You will be perfect for gamestop :)

Something similar happened to me once at the Tyson's Corner, VA location. Went to trade, unlocked wouldn't show up. The guy pulled the account using my phone number...nothing. He struggled for a good 10 minutes until the STORE MANAGER walked by and the gaming guy tells the store manager "This guy's unlocked is not showing up but I know for a fact he's an unlocked member. Can we give him an extra 10% manually in the form of a gift card?" The store manager says: "No. Did you try pulling it up using his email address instead?" Gaming guy: "I don't think that's gonna work" Store manager : "Just do it". Gaming guy asks me my email address, he enters it and says "I don't think that.....................What do you know. Here it is" Store manager gives the gaming guy a condescending look, then looks at me and he says: "next time it doesn't show up, tell the person in charge to use your email address instead of your phone number to pull up your unlocked account". And walks away with bad ass demeanor. Now, why would the store manager know something about Unlocked that the gaming guy himself does not know? That's completely beyond me.
