Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11 **** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.
Your store as in you work there? If so around what time should I go to attempt to pick up a hardened I was going to arrive at around 11 so I'm not there all night but I could get there earlier if it ment the deference.
I think what he is saying, like my store, their flagship down the street from their headquarters sold out of hardened through preorders. None will be available to other people. My store had over 700 preorders though.

I'm going to get my regular copy at midnight and hope for a copy at kmart when they open with some filler for $50 in coupons..

What's interesting is the status on bby.com has changed from "unavailable" to "in store only". So I wonder if they shipped more than just the pre-orders.
 I think my sarcasm detector is broken or something cuz I know you can't be serious. You wanna put $5 down on MW3 just to get the 50% promo bump and then cancel it before even leaving the store?

Do you not see the issue there? Why should BB keep giving the bonus bumps if people are gonna either walk out without doing the pre-order or cancel before leaving the store.

It's all about discretion.

Besides which, if Assassin's Creed Revelations is anything like prior Ubisoft titles you'll be able to pick that up for $15-20 in less than a year.
I think you misread, I want to pre order MW 3 but the promo is now gone. I was planning to put the $5 down which would cover tax, and use the 50% trade in bonus which would have equaled $60 in credit. Which is why I said I want to use as little cash as possible. Now that the promo is gone, not sure because it says 50% when you buy MW 3. I dont want to pay cash then trade in the games for credit I have nothing to use on then. I'm hoping they are cool enough for me to get the 50% then to use it on the game itself, or else I'm just going to pre order AC R and cancel it right there.

Just tell them you are buying the game. They will process your trade w/ bonus then immediately ring you up afterward for the game.

Sorry. I did initially misread your post. Either way, you said you wanted to put the $5 down on AC:R JUST to get the bonus and then IMMEDIATELY cancel it. You don't think that would look at all fishy to the rep doing your trade and taking the pre-order deposit that you wanna just cancel a minute after doing it?

Like Confoosious said, just do the 50% promo with purchase of MW3 on Tuesday because the other way will likely get you red flagged in the system at BB.:whistle2:#

For anyone wondering, it looks like you can double-dip on the 50% trade in bonus for MW3 by doing it once when you pre-order and another time when you pick up the game. This is my plan, that way I don't have to raise any red flags by cancelling pre-orders for games I do not want. :D

while I've had no problems with the cancelling this isn't a bad idea

When I was trading in games a couple days ago, the Video Game CSR at my closest BBY told me that they had 6 extra PS3 Hardened Editions that would be available for the Midnight Release.

Also, said that peeps started lining up for the Gears 3 Release at 10pm when the store closed, so I should probably be in line at 9pm for the MW3 release if I wanted to be guaranteed one.

Don't think I'm gonna wait in line for 3 hours just to get the Hardened though so...

I used my BF3 pre order slip four different times for trade ins.

You're lucky, most BBY's require a new preorder, because if they hit their preorder numbers they get 3 free copies of the game to distribute among themselves.
You're lucky, most BBY's require a new preorder, because if they hit their preorder numbers they get 3 free copies of the game to distribute among themselves.
More than that, some store managers do actually check the number of bonuses given vs the number of pre-orders taken. Discrepancy is pretty easy to spot since the ratio should be 1:1.

And that was at three different stores. Lucky indeed.

If I pre-ordered MW3 Hardened edition from Best Buy a couple of months ago, am I still in good shape to actually get it? Im kinda nervous because I know it's in very high demand.

If you preordered it, you're assured a copy of it. The only way you can lose your copy is if you don't pick it up within five days after release.

Yes, I'm the gaming sup at my Best Buy. However, I'm at one of the smallest stores in the company. Best bet would be to go to a large store that gets a ton of traffic. They probably recieved extra copies.

Just hope they don't run out of DLC like they did with Battlefield 3. I tried to get my DLC again yesterday and was basically told tough luck !!

I guess I left out a specific reference to trade ins that have a pre-order bonus, but considering we were talking about pre-orders and trade ins that should be fairly easy to imply.

I do imagine it is fairly easy for them to look at the numbers for the day and see that they had 5 trade ins with pre-order bonuses and only 2 pre-orders.
WOW...BB trade in values are even worse now. They are terrible. Really $1.00 for Crackdown 2?

Nice know you BB you now suck worst.
The cool down was inevitable.

They were giving crazy 30 on new games for a while. Then as late as a couple of weeks ago they were giving 26 credit. Now it feels games drop to 22 pretty fast. The 50% bumps are still nice but even those I bet fade soon.

Yeah it sucks playing Uncharted 3, getting a platinum on it and then turning around and giving it right back to them for $40.

Um how much were you expecting for crackdown 2 ? The game tanked and is being clearanced in many places. Besides best buy base values for the most part are better than everyone else's plus the trade in promos make it better

That's how it should work, but with Best Buy, nothing is assured. I'm willing to bet at least a few people who preordered the hardened edition will be out of luck.

I know this is the trade in thread, but this always turns into the goto place to discuss bestbuy midnight releases.

I preordered the hardened months ago, and just received a call from my bestbuy....and what do you know....they managed to fuck up yet another pre-order. They claim it is activision's fault and so they didn't get any copies, but that they are "suppose" to receive a shipment tomorrow. Their "solution" was to offer a 10% discount and let me pick up the regular edition tonight, and then I can return it (opened obviously) tomorrow when they get their shipment in. If this wasnt my last game of the buy 5 get $100 promo, I wouldn't be wasting my time with these tards any more. luckily, worse case scenario, I still have my amazon pre-order that will be here tomorrow as well.

Actually the gaming reps at BB told me that it's only 48 hours like Gamestop.
I know they didn't have enough preorder copies of Forza 4 limited and Dark Souls Collectors, so who knows. http://jalopnik.com/5848226/best-buy-oversells-forza-4-special-edition-screws-gamers
The good part about them not having enough Dark Souls CE(by comparison though Gamestop ONLY received the CE at first around here:whistle2:s) to cover pre-orders was that supposedly when people were coming in to pick up their pre-orders they were given a $20 gc(I believe) to compenssate for it and then many people were reporting receiving a CE after the fact from BB.com and as such received two copies of the game for ONE pre-order.;)
Actually the gaming reps at BB told me that it's only 48 hours like Gamestop.
It's been 5 days long as I can remember. Maybe it's a weird YMMV thing.

My local Best Buy has a big thing for MW3 starting at 8 tonight, really not sure if I want to go or not. lol

The gaming people are cool and I could easily kill time talking to them and there is a tournament of some sort going on too with free shit, but spending all that time around a bunch of COD fans sounds... mixed.

And yeah, haha, I think Crackdown 2 was at $2 for like a month. That game was a complete failure sales wise and I got it for like $7.50 a month after release. Still haven't played it.

I do imagine it is fairly easy for them to look at the numbers for the day and see that they had 5 trade ins with pre-order bonuses and only 2 pre-orders.
So say you go in, trade-in, get the pre-order/trade bonus but dont pre-order a game (showed an old reciept, knew the gaming rep, etc.). I come along later to the same store, have nothing to trade-in, but want some pre-order DLC so I put my fiver down on a game.

If you just look at numbers, that's one bonus and one preorder.

Are you talking about something else that I'm missing?

Is that case it would even out, but most POS systems track everything, and I mean everything, so it would even be possible to see a break down by the hour if you had reason to believe there was an issue. Mostly though, I just meant that any time there are more pre-order bonuses given for trade-ins than pre-orders that would be a red-flag for the manager. I imagine on most days though that the numbers actually favor the pre-orders as not that many people take advantage of the trade-ins.

Ultimately my point was just that some managers are super anal about stuff like this. I used to have a manager at a restaurant that would sometimes look over the rang in orders for any instance where we added a side of sour cream but didn't hit the button that charged $.50 for it. Or a table where maybe we didn't ring in the drinks (sometimes we didn't ring in water since there was no charge for it anyway) under the assumption that we were giving away free drinks, etc. She also used to go in and manually edit everyone's out times by a minute or two (less) so that collectively the labor sheet would look better (but that was cause her damn bonus was based on that). People like that always seem to end up being managers in retail and restaurants.

Im surprised that they dont have a $30 TIV for black ops towards MW3. They did it last year for black ops with MW2 and the year before that with MW2 and Call of Duty 4 and WAW

Best Buy hasn't had a trade-in program going back to MW2... least I'm fairly certain they didn't have it in store at the very least.

So Best Buy's Midnight Release deal was a total bust. Decided what the hell and went, the tournament and prizes (as well as some swag) that they actually told me they were going to have turned out to be standing outside (in MN no less), while six people at a time were allowed to go into the store and into the magnolia theater and try the game for 5-10 minutes before going back outside and having to wait in line again if they wanted a 2nd turn... until a little before midnight (note: by "told me" I mean not only did a gaming rep tell me it in store but they also made phone calls to people who pre-ordered to tell them about it, everyone in line thought there was some sort of tournament) . That's it.
lol why would they want that?
If it's a PS3 game and one of the 'Asian' versions of it, then it'll have English VO's titles/subtitles usually, so it's like buying a copy of the NA version of it....only with some Chinese/Japanese writing on the outer package.;)

But it's NOT really impossible to find import games that have been traded in to game stores. Someone on CAG found some train simulator from Japan in a Gamestop a while back.
My local Best Buy has a big thing for MW3 starting at 8 tonight, really not sure if I want to go or not. lol

The gaming people are cool and I could easily kill time talking to them and there is a tournament of some sort going on too with free !@#$%^&*, but spending all that time around a bunch of COD fans sounds... mixed.

It would probably be tons of people who had to ask their parents if they could stay up until 12. In other words, a bunch of 10-15 year olds. :D

A few questions-
1) Would Gamers Unlocked be worth it(for the 10 percent extra) if I traded Arkham City(2 copies), Sonic Colors DS, Virtua Fighter 5, and Forza 3? I looked at the trade in values with the 50 percent extra and it looked good. Just wondering if I would recoup money from doing the Gamers Unlocked.
2) If I preordered just for the 50 percent, would I be penalized for cancelling after?
