In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.
I traded some games last night and something popped up on the screen that I have to call certain number and it would not let it go through gift processing. I saw two option on the screen, override and cancel. I asked the guy to override it for me and he did. Does it mean that I'm not banned anymore or it only works for that day only?
it means you got lucky that the guy didn't know what it was. You be banned for good - unless they change their stupid policy at some point.

I guess I'm the first guy who got ban around my area. He was clueless on what to do next and he actually ask me to what to do. I guess I got lucky especially I was trading 3 red dead and 3 warhammer.

Traded in Back to the Future today.

It was $7 base, and I preordered Max Payne. Got the extra 50% as well as the unlocked bonus.

Good for me because I bought it on sale for $10 earlier in the month.

And - I think we can tell why you were banned :) i'm still not sure why I'm not. Luck, I guess.

He traded in 3, which the rules permit. Why would he be banned?

Hey so I recall there was that "don't trade over 3 of the same title" thing, but does that apply to each platform? Like if I did 3 FFXIII PS3 and 3 FFXIII X360?

Also reading the last few posts has me spooked :(
He traded in 3, which the rules permit. Why would he be banned?
No one knows, but I would guess trading 3 at a time of any game would definitely be a flag that someone was flipping. I know it fits the rule, but it's probably not in the spirit of what best buy expects from non-devil customers ;)

I am officiallyunbanned from best buy tradeins. I called the number up. Told them my limited spill. They(on the 4th call) deleted my trade in accounts, the right one and the one that was created by an employee by mistake, and created a new one. I did a test trade of brain age last night and it went through without an issue. Those people on the number or my best buy employees don't have a clue what is causing all theae bannings. So if you don't actually break any rules, give them a call. It is worth a shot.

I know that cancelled pre-orders were a big deal for the employees at my local store.

I should also point out that I am the only one my best buy employee's had seen banned yet. Not anymore! Sorry if ot sounds like bragging. I just feel in really successful rivht about now

So when you say 4th attempt, did you talk to 4 different people ?

Yes. Called 4 times, got 4 different reasons for my banning from (unless they fake their voices) 4 different people . This was over a 10 day period. I don't know how long my unbanning will last but I don't believe they will reban me just because.
He traded in 3, which the rules permit. Why would he be banned?
I worked in loss prevention a long time ago.

There are triggers on the accounts (more than 3 of one title, cancelling preorders, volume of tradeins, etc...) that flag an account.

Then each flagged account is looked at on an individual basis.

Then at that point, if any activity deems "unfit," the account is banned.

I am stunned you guys don't understand how this works. So there isn't just "one" reason for an account to be banned...it is a totality of the evidence. Allowing any of us to tradein is at their discretion and it doesn't take a genius to look at account and see it doesn't pass the sniff test.

I know I get it.

But it's totally retarded of corporate to ban all their best traders. If they are making money on the sales of each used game, they should be happy. If they are not making money on each used game, they should be paying less for each game. If they have a problem with cancelled preorders, then they should disallow preorder slips from being cancelled when they are part of a preorder bonus scenario. But for a used game business to flourish, it needs a healthy incoming flow of games.

And lets not forget the fact that most of the folks banned were buying games !!

Now I only step into BBY when the deal of the day is such a good deal I know BBY are loosing money on the sale.

I hear you, dude.

I am a Best Buy nuthugger. I think they are amazing even though they are absolute morons in some sense.

But they are being reactive and not proactive on their tradein numbers, so in their mind, guys that are trading in at high volumes are costing them money (either literally or in the sense that the trader is getting goods at a heavily discounted price). Best Buy has all the tools to outsmart the flippers, but they are going after the end result instead.

There is a reason why places like Blockbuster and programs like Napster have the affect they do on businesses. Many corporations just aren't smart enough to be able to adjust to the times on the fly and see the forest from the trees. A salaried, one man job could save Best Buy thousands and thousands and possibly millions of dollars a year.

What I don't get is how there are others that have done just as much if not more than the banned members and are still able to trade in. If there's some analysis that identifies the flippers why is it that certain members get banned while others don't? There's no consistency.

I wouldn't be surprised though if another wave of bannings come down at some point. I'm sure there will be more that get caught up in it eventually.

I hear you, but I would say that there is NO WAY that the loss prevention is completely caught up with evaluating flagged accounts. There is a backlog.

In addition, banning accounts is subjective. On one particular day, the employee could look at the entire case and choose not to ban the flagged account (for a variety of reasons...volume of purchases, Best Buy credit cards, fantastic sex the night before) and said account wouldn't get flagged again until it hit whatever barriers their system has in place (if I had to guess, trade volume is their main flag).

Is there a way to find out if you're banned without actually doing a trade in? From the stories I've read in this thread, I feel like there's a very good chance I'm banned. However, I don't want to have an awkward moment at BB to find out.

Not sure. Guess someone could post the number that appears on the screen when banned. Would do it myself but I forgot the number.

Does anybody have the phone number to contact about the trade-in bans? I lost my fricin' notice.

So I got my first mag for being unlocked. Does the welcome "pack" or whatever come separately or after the magazine starts showing up?

Seperate. Took about 1.5 months for mine to come in.

If BB hired me and paid me enough, I could turn to the dark side and help them track down and bannimify my fellow flippers.;)

But they didn't even wanna hire me to work in their stores after going through three frickin' interviews with three seperate managers, two of which know me to see me now from all of the times they had to override the @Gamer coupons not stacking with sale prices.

I was trading in some games today and the employee was talking about how best buy is thinking about opening up standalone game stores similar to a best buy mobile.

you mean like gamestop. All I can say is gl with that seeing how they are going crazy with their banhammer.

He is referring to how Best Buy has "Best Buy Mobile" stores, which are smaller stores that focus almost entirely on phones and similar gadgets. You find them in a lot of malls where having a full scale Best Buy would be either impractical or impossible. They are completely stand-alone, and so, he stated that Best Buy is looking to open stand-alone gaming stores in the same way that they have the Best Buy Mobile stores.

It'd be interesting, but I'm doubtful. They just don't seem that interested in making their gaming section as profitable as it could/should be.

My manager told me about this last spring. I hear they are going to be trying one out in or around Tampa soon.

Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit! Best Buy just screwed up something major and I just got two more $100 reward zone certificates on top of the $100 one I got for my 5 for 20! I need to find something to spend $200-$300 on immediately...

Wow! Awesome!!!

Go buy a Kindle Fire! You could easily sell one for $175 or so on Craigslist/eBay. Only a $25 loss.

Or you could stack a $25/off coupon on a used iPad? At that point, you could probably re-sell at cost?

Trying to think of other things in the $200-$300 range that you could use or sell...

$299 3D PlayStation Display?
Camera?
GPS?
Just pick up all the Blu-Rays you've wanted?
Any appliances you need? Microwave?

Good luck! I agree... spend it quickly!

Kindle Fire is tempting. Wish I could order that online cause I feel like I'll get some looks with 2 $100 RZ certs. That would also leave me with $100 to spend, and I could use the two "error" ones on that and hopefully keep the third. I already printed them in hopes that if they take them off the site they'll still work.

I'm still slightly in shock. I got two emails today saying that my certificate was there, and thought, "no... there's... there's no way they gave me two more... lets just look... oh... oh shit... print."

I'm actually debating getting a new Xbox. Mine is an old model and I got this one back after sending in a RROD over a year ago. It is a matter of time... That $75 gift card that comes with it makes it an even better deal. Kind of like getting $275 in free credit.

Good for you. It caused me to check my account.... no dice here... enjoy whatever you get for free from them. Last thing I got for free was Elder Scrolls Skyrim CE so I can't really complain too much.

Other BB giftcards so they cannot reverse it, or AMZ giftcards, or just go crazy on a system and some games.

Think I'm going with a new Xbox. Anyone know off hand if you can use the hard drive transfer kits to transfer stuff from an old 250 to a new xbox slim 250?

Kind of like getting $275 in free credit.
buy kindle cards..?

Just a heads up to everyone. If you can pull this off it is a pretty good deal.

Gamestop B2G2 on PS2 games

2 copies of Madden 12 (34.99 each)
2 of your favorite/most rare PS2 games (Dragon Ball Z, ICO, Fatal Frame, etc)

Out the door cost is 66.78

Trade in Madden 12 to Best Buy = Base 13 * 1.60 (Preorder/GCU) = 41.60 / Final cost on the 2 games you really want. 25.xx/12.xx each

or for the really adventurous purchase 3 copies of Madden 12 plus 1 of your favorites. BB Trade = 62.40 so it s 4.38 for whatever game you really want.

Of course you could do 4 copies of Madden 12 but that just seems too obvious plus you need to go there more than once, banning, etc, etc. BB trade value = 83.20

Amazon TIV on Madden 12 is 20.25 as well. In case you need to dump more copies of the game.

But Madden '12 is a PS3 game, and not a PS2 game... unless I'm missing something...

Lets say you do get 4 copies of Madden 12

$66 into $83 isnt that great of a flip.

It is just a movement of credit with a small upside for your time. The real idea would be the middle option to basically get a 4.38 copy of whatever ps2 game you want up to 34.99

I was trying to find madden 12 for ps2 for a charity in December and there was 1 Gamestop in St. Louis that had it (out of something like 15 or 20 possible to drive to). That Gamestop also claimed to have sold it in the 20 minutes it took me to drive there. So I doubt you'd find 3-4 copies of it anywhere.
