Ever since I turned to the world of graphic novels years ago, I've been all but out of touch with the world of monthly comics. I'm looking to get back in, and I could use some recommendations on the best ongoing titles out there.

Just so you know, I currently read three ongoing series: Astro City, 100 Bullets, and Runaways. That might help to give you an idea of what I'm looking for, though I suppose all three are so markedly different that you won't find it any easier!

I've been told to try Fables and The Walking Dead, and I'll get cracking on those as soon as I can. Any other recommendations?

I'm enjoying newuniversal by Warren Ellis and Salvador Larroca. Unfortunately, it's only shipping bimonthly at best right now; but hey, you read Astro City (as do I) so this won't seem too odd to you. You don't really need an understanding of the original New Universe to follow it. It's done now but Planetary was an incredible book, also written by Ellis but penciled by John Cassaday. This leads to my third recommendation, Astonishing X-Men. It's also penciled by Cassaday and written by Joss Whedon. Astonishing is also plagued by lateness and doesn't ship more often than bimonthly.

The Goon... that's all you need.

I'll second The Punisher MAX, but I stopped reading after the 20th issue for no reason. I'll get back to it eventually.

cmon, give the goon a chance!

(note comic book isn't B&W, it's watercolored)

Spawn is my favorite comic book, my only favorite truthfully. His story is just one of a kind, and I've always been drawn to it.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone, much appreciated! I'll definitely check out all the titles suggested so far. I'm hoping to get started on Ultimates and the MAX imprint of The Punisher soon just 'cause I'm in the mood for some Marvel right now.

After that, I think I'll try Invincible and newuniversal. Neocisco, I've actually read some Astonishing X-Men before, but I just couldn't seem to shake a perception of Buffy stylistics in Whedon's phraseology. Since the effect is probably of my own doing, I'll pick up Astonishing again once that feeling's subsided.

I tried searching up information on The Goon to see what it's all about, and I find myself confused. Is it a comedic take on old pulp fiction? I can't figure it out. Nonetheless, I'll give it a shot on the basis of your enthusiasm for the title, RelentlessRolento.

Thanks for bringing up Steve Niles, Graystone. I'd meant to read 30 Days of Night but completely forgot about it. Have you read his 28 Days Later: The Aftermath book? Is it any good?

For all of you who recommended Spawn, is there any particular story arc you would highlight as the best?

Don't read any spoilers or look up anything about Invincible until at least after you finish volume 2. I guarantee you will be glad you didn't.

Just start at the beginning and go forward. It gets more confusing as it goes on, so just stop whenever.

Someone mentioned Y: The Last Man, and I wholeheartedly agree. It's about the last man on Earth after every other male dies off simultaneously. It's written by Brian K. Vaughan - the same guy behind Runaways. I'd also highly recommend his other series, Ex Machina, about the mayor of New York City who can control machines by talking to them.

I haven't read the 28 days later, sorry. However the 30 days of night is a series of mini series. Each story might run from 4-12 issues. So just jump in. :D

Actually, I agree with your point on Whedon. It's not just you. I'm OK with it but if it's offputting to you then it's something to consider.

You have it pretty much right. Think of it as a comedy (with some serious story) about zombies, gangsters, and whatever the hell. It has humor I can never get anywhere else.

Invincible is the reason I got back into comics. Really, really good stuff. The most recent issue is written to be a jumping on point, it contains a recap of the entire series, though you should pick upt the trades or the hard covers.

Punisher is pretty good. And I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but Batman is always a classic. I found a couple of old issues in my English class; read five or six during classtime. It was one of my favorite classes of the year.
They still make those? I've seen comic shops around town, but I always assumed they were just fronts for hardcore pornography stores...
Awesomely enough, that is what all the comic book stores near me are. You just show em your ID and they let you into the "back room".

I recommend Fell by Warren Ellis. It's put out by Image bi-monthly. It uses a 9 panel per page layout so its only 16 pages per issue. Cool thing is, the cover price is only $1.99. Kind of has a "Law & Order meets Silent Hill" feel to it. Awesome book!

Thanks for all the recommendations! I've been trying my best to go through every title that's been listed in this thread.

I'm always wondering about something else:

What are the best/biggest websites for comic news/reviews and shopping? At this point I only know of IGN Comics and Silver Bullet Comics, so any info would be appreciated.
