Anyone from the Columbia, MD area? I just moved here so I have no idea how "bad" black friday gets around here at the big box stores like Best Buy, Walmart, etc. I'm hoping to get a good deal on a PS3 but if the crowds tend to be crazy at these stores I'm not gonna bother.

Not from Columbia but I'm from the Rockville area. What I can tell you if you are in the market for a PS3 is check out Best Buy on Black Friday as they are selling the PS3 Slim with a free copy of Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time and Little Big Planet. ..Don't know if the latter is the game of the year edition. You should check the ad. The link is in the first post for this thread. Hope that helps! Highly recommend the system and those 2 games particularly!

Last year my Best Buy had a pallet of the PS3 for the doorbuster. I think it was around 30 units, no more then 50. they had the same amount of 360's too. Wal-mart in my area had the same amount. But it will vary in your area.

I think they ad will say on the minimum number of bundles not what your store will have. I think it will likely vary from store to store. Or my personal bet, they send 50 units to each store to make a fair amount available and keep the loses down. /nosmartass

Flashback Black Friday 2008:

My walmart is a 24hr. store and people line up for the big sale items like TV's hours before 5am. Since all the big ticket items were ALL handed out at the one Site to Store location in the back of my WalMart (DUMB) it clogged up every concievable aisle going towards the back of the store. Add onto this the huge pallets in the middle of the aisles and it is a recipe for disaster! People literally had no clue where the line started or ended. The only thing that could have remotely helped out was a map of item locations but, it ONLY showed the location of where the item location was, not where the lines were (DUMB). The end result was a pure fucking cluster that annoys and enrages every shopper in the entire store; even those just trying to walk on the main paths around the store. If a fire broke out or someone got hurt nobody would get in or out of that store until the mob cleared out at ~6am.

In slight contrast, Best Buy had people wait outside, and assigns tickets before the store opens which is a pro and a con. It helps prevent the mob mentality inside the store and lets others actually shop for items, it potentially keeps some of the crowd down, especially if it's brutally cold upstate NY night, but it's brutally cold for those who want to stay! At least this way people know whether they got an item or not and have the option of leaving for another store.

If WalMart would combine Best Buy's methods with their own adding a few improvements it would help a lot:
  • Start to hand out tickets far before 5am.
    • This allows WalMart to properly gauge whether or not an item is "sold out" so they can properly inform people in line before the mad rush to the back of the store, or wherever the item is located.
    • Allows possibility of giving tickets expiration times i.e. 7am that allow people to disperse for a while and come back when some of the initial rush has died down
  • If you have items you KNOW will attract huge crowds space them around the store and tell people where to line up
    • Allows the flow of normal traffic occur without pushing and shoving.
    • Keeps people warm on brutally cold Upstate NY nights

I am finally going to get a PS3 and up until I saw the Walmart add I was just going to get the Uncharted regular 160 gb ps3 for $350. But I will definitely head to my walmart for the Slim deal! Been wanting to get Batman, and infamous... and I am a huge Bat fan and DK on blu-ray!!! YES!!!
 
Speaking of PS3 deals, a Gamestop employee told me that they will offer the PS3 Slim 250gb System with a FREE copy of Uncharted 2. I'm not sure if this ia a ymmv deal or a future promo for Black Friday, but just a quick heads up on another possible deal if you already built up credit.

Did you buy from the Best Buy on the Pike last year? I'm hoping to get a good deal on the PS3, and actually do prefer the Walmart one, but tbh I've never been in a Walmart.

As for the Amazon deals, when do they come out? Everybody is saying that they check Amazon before they go out, so I'm assuming they'll be out on Thanksgiving Day? Anything I need to be aware of? Seems like you all are expecting the site to shut down or something...

By the way the Best Buy PS3 deal includes the Little Big Planet GOTY edition. I didn't know about Walmart's PS3 deal though which includes Infamous, Batman and the Dark Knight on Blu-ray. Either one is a killer deal! I own all games except Batman but have played the demo, these are all definitely must own titles. Up to you what the best deal is. Good luck!

Yes I didn't see the Walmart update. I knew of the Best Buy one but hadn't checked what changes were made to the first post since a few days ago. Definitely go for either one but with the Blu-ray movie throw in the Walmart deal seems to win out! I can't even remember the last time I've done anything during Black Friday. Sure you can save money and all but for me its never been worth the hassle. That's changing this time though as I'm going to Kmart out in Silver Spring to pick up the Assassin's Creed PSP bundle. To get the ACII PS3 version for free its to hard to pass up since I've been meaning to upgrade from my PSP 1000 for awhile now. Best of luck wherever you go! Let us know what you end up getting!

They have done it for me each year I have gone there (at least with Video Games and DVDs). It included items that were doorbusters for those two genres.
 
Man, I work at Wal-Mart but am on vacation this week. Don't go back until Monday. Going in there this week to get my future schedule but I'm sure someone will leak something before I can or even want to go in there. I use to be under the dept mgr in toys so she will hopefully hook me up on what to expect...also I am going to ask electronics about those games. I would love to see GTA for PS3 on there.

It's a rehash. but it's a really well made rehash. It's pretty much the same game with co-op added, which if you have a friend to play with is a blast. I have 105 hours logged on it, at least 50 of those are from playing co-op Mercenaries with my girlfriend.

Also, you could pick up a warranty on most items through SquareTrade, which is at www.squaretrade.com .

Most TV manufacturers will also sell extended warranties on their TV's directly, though third party warranties are usually cheaper than first party warranties.

Thanks for your input. I honestly don't care which games I get with the PS3 from these deals because they all sound awesome. I already have TDK on blu-ray so I don't really care about that, but hey, a free movie is a free movie. I was just trying to decide if it would be worth possibly risking life and limb at the store, haha. Maybe Amazon will come out with something amazing and that'll be it for me.

So far, it seems like my money's going to be going to Walmart for the DS Lite at $98, GTA4 at $10 and possibly COD4 MW GOTY for $25. But, we have yet to see what Gamestop and Amazon pull. I'm looking to get rid of some GS credit and maybe flip it into Amazon but we'll see.
 
Just came back from BB and they said that they will not pm any other stores during BF. So it seems Wallyworld is the place to be. Are the games in the BB ad doorbusters or are those prices applicable both Friday and Saturday. It seems that the only doorbusters are the items on the front page.

there is no reason this shouldnt work as long as you were there with in the 5-1 doorbuster special for something little like a video game.

not trying this with the tv or anything. just a video game or movie deal or something.
 
the reason why the gamestop ad is not posted is because it's not in my hand currently. I can fix that tomorrow.
 
Would you guys rather get the ps3 deal from walmart or the ps3 deal from best buy? Im focusing on quality of games because I already have the Dark Knight on DVD.

Only problem with this theory is that BB doesn't allow returns or exchanges during the doorbuster hours. They use the CS registers for regular purchases to prevent even longer lines. At least this is what they have done in previous years. Just got another confirmation from another BB and they will also not pm any other store during BF. Hope things change by next week but I doubt it.

Depends on the retailer. Best Buy doesn't even staff their return desk during the doorbuster sales, so you couldn't do a return there and get the deal. Target probably would not allow it and Toys R Us varies by manager. Walmart would probably allow it. Also, many retailers pull the games that are going to be doorbusters up to a week before hand. So, you're better off just taking your chances on the morning of or getting Walmart to price match.
 
damn I want that PS3 bundle, but I am going to camp out at my local Fry's instead of BB first. Hopefully the PS3 bundle will still be available when I go there after Fry's. I need new computer parts, and Fry's usually has good deals. Only bad thing about Fry's is their ad does not leak until that morning of Black Friday.
